Over the past fifteen years\, she has worked relentlessly to stretch boundaries and limitations for harpists. In 2022\, she made history by becoming the first Black woman to be nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. That same year\, she was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Ever-expanding as an artist\, she has worked with cultural icons including Common\, Lauryn Hill\, John Legend\, and Moses Sumney. Her current album\, Brand New Life\, builds on her already rich oeuvre\, and cements the harp’s place in pop culture. As the title of the album suggests\, Brand New Life is about forging new paths–artistic\, personal\, political\, and spiritual. On this album\, Younger salutes her musical foremother\, the trailblazing harpist Dorothy Ashby\, while also speaking to the sentiments of more recent generations. “We’re bringing new life to Dorothy Ashby’s popular and previously unreleased compositions. We’re creating new life…for the instrument\,” Younger said. Brand New Life is an album about living fully\, in neon bright color. \nIn March of 2022\, Younger flew to Chicago and began recording Brand New Life in the home studio of her long time collaborator and friend\, Makaya McCraven\, who both produced and played drums on the album. In the Windy City\, Younger hoped to harness some of Ashby’s funky energy from a recording she did there nearly five decades before. Younger gathered artists who have had a sense of kinship with Ashby; from the internationally-lauded neo-soul bassist/vocalist/rapper Meshell Ndegeocello\, to her long-time bassist Rashaan Carter\, plus the legendary rapper and producer Pete Rock and the talented contemporary producer 9th Wonder. The latter producers introduced hip hop and R&B listeners to Ashby in the 1990s and early 2000s via slick samples. Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s 1992 release\, “For Pete’s Sake\,” samples Ashby’s 1968 hit “Come Live With Me.” 9th Wonder’s remix of singer Amerie’s 2003 R&B classic “Why Don’t We Fall in Love\,” also includes a Dorothy Ashby sample from “Come Live With Me.” With Younger’s solo rendition of this heavily sampled song on Brand New Life\, she builds a sonic bridge between generations. “I wanted everyone on the record to have a special connection to Dorothy [Ashby]\,” she said. For the project\, Younger also recorded a number of Ashby’s compositions that were never recorded before\, alongside Ashby fan favorites and Younger originals. \nThe emotional complexity of the album is stunningly captured in the title track\, “Brand New Life\,” an original co-written by Younger and singer\, Mumu Fresh. “This love is so deep\, time and space couldn’t keep you away from me\,” Mumu Fresh sings. Younger’s playing paints lush details over Mumu Fresh’s smooth vocals leaving nothing to be sonically desired. Against the backdrop of current social issues–climate change\, racism\, health disparities\, and women’s rights–the song speaks to a desire that many people have for change\, for something new in the world. “Brand New Life” reaches listeners at the level of the human. \nLove is a subtle but insistent thread throughout the album. The opening track\, “You’re a Girl For One Man Only\,” is a previously unrecorded Dorothy Ashby composition. Sonically\, it is tender and evocative of a first kiss or the early seasons of new romance. Younger recalls the original song’s lyrics’ more traditional message of romantic longing that we still hear in popular music today. Boy chases girl. Girl succumbs. In Younger’s version\, there is a sense of agency and exploration. Younger creates a mesmerizing atmosphere. In the second half of the track we are met with a delicate dance between Joel Ross on vibraphone and Younger on harp\, the two instruments pining through the melody. \nBrand New Life is part of her steadfast efforts to amplify the contributions of black women harpists and to keep their legacies alive. Her care for and attention to Dorothy Ashby as a musical ancestor has been consistent throughout her career. Akin to the popular hashtag\, #CiteBlackWomen\, which demands that consumers credit and recognize black women for their intellectual labor\, Younger urges us to recognize Ashby’s contribution to the American songbook. The album is part of a larger project of recognizing not only the history of innovators of distinguished harp – a history that places Ashby and Younger together on a continuum – but also the presence of everyday black women. \n“Running Game” was an obscure seven-inch single release originally entitled “Double Talkin’” and featured Ashby on piano. In the song’s intro\, we hear what sounds like a casual conversation at a black women’s beauty salon or at a social gathering of sorts where women freely share advice and observations on life with one another. The voices in the intro are of Younger’s mother and aunt. Younger sets up listeners by reading the lyrics from Ashby’s original. “Every man I meet is double talkin.’ Where did the good men go?” The women candidly respond to the song lyrics. One says\, “As far as game\, men have been running game since day one.” The track leads into\, “Running Game\,” a ballad with inflections of Negro spirituals and the blues. Here\, Younger’s expressivity on her instrument is incomparable. As the strings (arranged by DeSean Jones) hum behind her\, the “double-talking” gold-digging man comes into full view. “Running-Game” ends on a note of optimism\, of marching forward despite life’s struggle. \nYounger was born and raised in Hempstead\, New York. As a teen in the early 1990s\, she bopped to the beats of artists like LL Cool J\, Queen Latifah\, and Busta Rhymes. Among these hip hop greats\, she discovered Ashby’s music by way of hip hop legend Pete Rock. She began playing harp at the age of eleven and eventually enrolled at the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford in Connecticut where she studied classical music. It was through the encouragement of legendary saxophonist Jackie McLean that she made her first foray into jazz with the harp. \nHearing Ashby for the first time led her to envision new possibilities for herself as a harpist. “She was covering all of these popular tunes and soundtracks [of the time] and I wanted to do that. She’s playing pop\, jazz and everyone’s sampling her–DJ Premier\, Pete Rock\, J. Dilla. Hearing\, then seeing her as a Black Woman\, while I’m this random little isolated black girl playing a harp by myself was everything to me.” Younger forged her way with a small but mighty group of black women harpists as examples—Sarah Lawrence from her hometown\, Ann Hobson-Pilot\, Dorothy Ashby\, and Alice Coltrane—who were consistent sources of inspiration. \nIn 2006\, after graduating from the Hartt School\, Younger went on to develop a name for herself on the jazz and commercial recording scene in New York City. To date\, her performance roster is fierce. As a side-woman\, she has played alongside jazz icons such as Pharoah Sanders\, Ravi Coltrane\, Jack DeJohnette and Reggie Workman. Younger’s commitment to carrying the torch can also be seen through her work as a performer and educator. In 2008\, she earned a Master of Music from New York University’s Steinhardt School. During this time\, she began to work seriously as an educator. She has been guest faculty and lecturer at numerous universities including but not limited to Berklee College of Music\, Princeton University\, Howard University and Tulane University. Currently\, she serves as teaching artist faculty at New York University and The New School. \nIn 2020\, Younger was named winner of the DownBeat Critics Poll in the category of “Rising Star” harpist. Her work as side-woman is evidence of Younger’s undeniable presence in the sound of contemporary jazz today. In recent years\, she has appeared on albums by Lakecia Benjamin\, Robert Glasper\, Jeremy Pelt\, The Baylor Project and Makaya McCraven\, just to name a few. In addition to her contributions as a side-woman\, Younger’s commitment to honoring the legacy of black women harpists can be seen through her curatorial work. She has curated a number of performances dedicated to honoring the work of Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane. This work speaks to her dedication as a purveyor of black music and history.

He began studying classical guitar at age seven\, switching to string bass at age nine. While studying music at the University of Oklahoma\, he began working the clubs around the state. \nIn September of 1980\, Lynn relocated to Cincinnati\, Ohio to join the Steve Schmidt Trio and the Blue Wisp Big Band. He was awarded a Jazz Studies Fellowship in the summer of 1981 from the National Endowment for the Arts to study with Rufus Reid. \nLynn has been a faculty member at the College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati\, Long Island University\, State University of New York at New Paltz\, William Patterson College\, and is currently a full professor at the University of North Texas. He thoroughly enjoys teaching workshops\, coaching ensembles\, and doing artist-in residence programs\, having done many throughout America and Europe including numerous schools\, kindergarten through college\, Jamey Aebersold’s and UNT jazz camps\, and Clark Terry’s Institute of Jazz Studies. He currently has private students as well. \nDuring September of 1984\, Lynn joined Woody Herman and the Young Thundering Herd. July of 1985 brought him a position with the Count Basie Orchestra. During this time he moved to New York City (1986) where he resided until 1998. After his two-year engagement with the Basie Band\, he did an extended tour with Tony Bennett and a six-month tour with George Shearing. Much of 1991 was spent touring with Monty Alexander. 1992 through 1994 was spent freelancing in the New York area. 1995 until the fall of 2000 was with the Jeff Hamilton Trio. He has performed at festivals world wide including the Bern\, Concord\, JVC\, Kool\, Kyoto\, Chicago\, Nice\, Elkhart\, Kansas City\, Montreal\, Edmonton\, Newport\, North Sea\, Perugia\, West Coast\, San Sebastian\, Ottercrest\, Topeka\, Sarasota\, Paradise Valley and Poori. At present\, Lynn is freelancing and touring as a performer and clinician with a variety of people.

A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster-child for intersectionality\,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” A former drum major and classically-trained clarinetist turned folk singer\, Matthews is using her voice to answer Dr. Martin Luther King’s call to be “a drum major for justice.” Crys Matthews’s thoughtful\, realistic and emotional songs speak to the voice of our generation and remind us why music indeed soothes the soul. \nThe show is at 7:30 pm with doors opening at 7 pm. These two virtuosic multi-instrumentalists fuse their respective Venezuelan and Appalachian folk traditions on the harp\, banjo\, cuatro\, fiddle\, upright bass\, guitar\, and maracas to prove that music has no borders. Their bilingual (esp / eng) program includes storytelling\, humor\, and singalongs. \nFULL BIO \nENGLISH \nLarry & Joe were destined to make music together. \nLarry Bellorín hails from Monagas\, Venezuela and is a legend of Llanera music. Joe Troop is from North Carolina and is a GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime musician. Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. Joe\, after a decade in South America\, got stranded back in his stomping grounds in the pandemic. Larry worked construction to make ends meet. Joe’s acclaimed “latingrass” band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus\, and he shifted into action working with asylum seeking migrants. Then Larry met Joe. \nCurrently based in the Triangle of North Carolina\, both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders. As a duo they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp\, banjo\, cuatro\, fiddle\, maracas\, guitar\, upright bass\, and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. Improvisation is a specialty of both performers\, and they will often “go off the beaten track” often in order to keep every show fresh and spontaneous. \nAlice Hasen and Josh Threlkeld”s collaborative EP\, “The Aisling Farm Sessions\,” drops August 25\, 2023. This six-track project will be a formal introduction to the Memphis duo.  Both Hasen and Threlkeld come from strong instrumental backgrounds\, with cumulative decades of experience in both the classical and folk worlds. The pair loves to go to spontaneous and unexpected places\, and this project reflects that passion (the first song is entitled “Off the Beaten”). From there\, Threlkeld reinterprets an Old Time fiddle tune\, “Angeline the Baker\,” and Hasen evokes wistful longing for her Vermont roots with “Come Round.” Songs covered include Van Morrison’s “Moondance\,” “Promentory” (from The Last of the Mohicans)\, and “Achilles Jig” in a special nod to fiddler Bill Thurman. “The Aisling Farm Sessions” was recorded live in March 2023 in Limerick cabin\, on Len and Susan Lawhon’s Aisling Farm. \nBio:  \nAlice Hasen and Josh Threlkeld combine instrumental virtuosity\, creative songwriting and a rainbow of tonal colors in Memphis’ newest duo act. From reinventions of old fiddle tunes to subversive and dynamic improvisation\, the pair transports their audience to vibrant and unexpected soundscapes. We run multiple monthly shows and offer workshops. But we also aim to build the improv community of Memphis with our free workshops and open-to-all jams. Her joyful energy has captivated audiences around the world and her passion for music is as infectious as her unique ability to connect with audiences. If he were simply a songwriter\, his work would be admired throughout the industry; if he were only a singer\, audiences would be engaged and enchanted by his voice; if he were just a guitarist\, he would deserve world-wide acclaim for his artistry. But he’s not just any one of these\, he’s all three. And he is\, quite simply\, amazing. Daniel has been wowing us since our house show days and we’re so excited to welcome him back for his FIFTH Folk All Y’all event. \nThe show is at 7:30 pm with doors opening at 7 pm. Susan’s sound is an eclectic mix of bluesy jazz and pop; emotive\, evocative\, soft and sensual\, sometimes loud and bawdy…yet always coming straight from the soul. \nBios: \nSUSAN MARSHALL\nRecording artist Susan Marshall has released five critically praised solo albums— Susan Marshall Is Honey Mouth\, Firefly\, Little Red\, Decorations of Red\, and her latest\, 639 Madison. The former front lady for ’90s rock/soul band The Mother Station is also known for her performances with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra\, as well as her 15-year residency at Itta Bena\, located on world-famous Beale Street\, just above B.B. King’s. \nShe’s toured internationally as part of the Afghan Whigs\, as well as Cat Power & The Memphis Rhythm Band. She has appeared on Austin City Limits\, The Late Show With David Letterman\, Late Night with Conan O’Brien\, and the BBC’s Later…with Jools Holland and has been a featured artist for Sun Studio sessions on PBS. \nSusan is also known for her studio and stage work with a wide range of superstars; Al Green\, Lucinda Williams\, Keith Richards\, Norah Jones\, Lenny Kravitz\, Lynyrd Skynyrd\, Ann Peebles\, Don Bryant\, Foy Vance\, North Mississippi Allstars\, Solomon Burke\, Bobby “Blue” Bland\, and Primal Scream to name a few. \nHer studio background vocal work has garnered multiple gold and platinum record awards\, as well as the distinction of having sung background vocals on five GRAMMY-nominated records. Barcelona native dancer and choreographer\, Noelia Garcia Carmona\, along with guitarist Roy Brewer combine their years of experience and love of Flamenco in a night of Spanish magic and “duende!” The ensemble also includes visual artist and singer Melanie Pyron and flutist Mari Kamikura\, who will blend their melodies with the rhythms of the guitar and dance. \nThis captivating “tablao” style concert presents a variety of “palos” – from the nobel Seguiriyas to playful fiesta songs. The newly created ensemble\, Flamenco Memphis\, will share the beauty\, energy and passion of flamenco in this exciting Spanish night of culture and art. \nCome and join us in this Summer Noche Flamenca! \nThe Ensemble: \nRoy Brewer is a freelance musician and arranger in Memphis. He plays violin\, mandolin and various styles of guitar. Roy has been studying Flamenco guitar since 1980. \nNoelia Garcia Carmona is a performer\, choreographer and dance educator. She teaches ballet and Spanish dance and flamenco to students from early childhood to senior citizens. She is the co-founder of Flamenco Memphis with Roy Brewer. \nMelanie Pyron\, originally from El Dorado\, Arkansas\, studied fine arts in Louisiana\, London\, Germany\, and Barcelona. Annual travels to Mexico as a child stimulated her lifelong passion for the Spanish language and the music from all Hispanic cultures. While in Barcelona\, she witnessed live flamenco performances and is deeply moved by its unique and passionate expression. \nMari Kamikura is a Japanese flutist residing in Memphis. Mari completed a master’s degree in flute performance at the University of Memphis in 2021 and is currently working on an artist diploma certificate. She has appeared as a substitute 2nd and 3rd flute in Memphis Symphony Orchestra in 22-23 season. She is also an artist fellow at Memphis Music Initiative where she helps the middle school band program in MSCS. She performed with Flamenco Memphis in their most recent performance at the Jay Etkin Gallery. \nFlamenco Memphis is working on bringing awareness and expansion of Flamenco Art and Spanish culture in the Memphis area and the Midsouth through dance classes\, lectures\, culture and performances.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Modern Masters Jazz Series: Pat Bianchi with the Ted Ludwig Trio in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nTuesday\, July 11\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door | $10 student tickets at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nGrammy-nominated organist\, winner of DownBeat magazine’s 2016 rising star poll and Hot Housemagazine’s 2019 poll\, Pat Bianchi has established himself as one of the premier organists on the international scene today. His command of the instrument\, harmonic prowess\, rhythmic intensity and versatility are rivaled by few. Bianchi has had the honor of being a longtime member of jazz guitar icon Pat Martino’s trio and also performed with NEA Jazz Master and saxophone legend Lou Donaldson’s quartet for a number of years as well. \nHe has released eight CDs as a leader and is also a featured artist on over 30 recordings. Building on the success of his 2015 recording A Higher Standard\, his 2019 release In The Moment rose to #1 on the Jazzweek Radio Charts and features an array of guests including Pat Martino\, Kevin Mahogany\, Joe Locke\, Peter Bernstein\, Paul Bollenback\, Byron Landham\, Carmen Intorre Jr. Bianchi briefly steps away from his straight-ahead roots on his newest release (2021) Something To Say. \nBianchi\, who comes from a musically gifted family\, began playing organ at the age of 7\, after receiving a Farfisa Compact Duo organ as a Christmas gift. His grandfathers (Pat Bianchi – Saxophone\, and Richard Zona – Trumpet) along with his father (Nick Bianchi – Drums) all working musicians\, provided a great deal of support and guidance early in his musical development. Recognizing Pat’s continuing affinity for music\, his parents enrolled him in classical piano study. While still maintaining a strong interest in organ\, he was playing his first professional gigs by the age of 11\, eventually performing with dance bands around his hometown of Rochester\, NY. Bianchi’s interest shifted in his high school years as he began to also focus more on jazz piano. Enrolling in The Eastman School of Music’s preparatory program for piano and music theory\, Pat was also mentored by numerous musicians in the Rochester jazz scene\, eventually choosing to continue his studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Bianchi never lost sight of his love of Jazz Organ and since a B3 was still out of his reach\, he began spending more time on a smaller version of the famed instrument called a Hammond M100. With his passion and dedication\, (also not being able to play left hand bass on a Spinet organ) Bianchi taught himself to play bass lines solely with his foot pedals. It was shortly after this time that Bianchi had a chance encounter with his hero (and soon to be mentor) Joey DeFrancesco. This was the moment Pat knew that in time he would leave the piano behind for the Hammond B3. After graduating Berklee cum laude\, Bianchi secured the position as the house pianist at the famous El Chapultepec club in Denver\, CO. The Pec (as it is known to locals) often brought in guest artists giving Pat the opportunity to play with such greats as Red Holloway\, Dakota Staton\, Carl Fontana\, Javon Jackson\, Mark Elf\, Bud Shank\, Brad Leali\, Pete Christlieb\, and Conte Candoli. After being at the Pec for six nights a week for almost three years\, Pat became an important fixture on the Denver jazz scene. \nAt this time\, Bianchi decided to focus exclusively on the organ making his national debut as an organist\, appearing on two recordings as a member the Denver based organ trio\, 3osity. The national release of Art of The Jazz Organ Trio and the subsequent recording Tri-O-City brought Bianchi wider recognition and onto a larger stage as a rising star of the organ. \nMoving to NYC\, Bianchi quickly established himself in the competitive New York scene. At this time\, legendary saxophonist Lou Donaldson immediately took notice of the young organist. Bianchi then joined the faculty of the University of Colorado at Boulder Jazz Studies Program teaching piano\, theory\, and ensembles to undergraduate\, masters\, and doctoral students. During this time he recorded his first album as a leader\, East Coast Roots\, which features Mark Whitfield on guitar and Byron Landham on drums. At the same time\, Bianchi began working closely with drummer Ralph Peterson Jr. on collaborative projects\, including and co-leading The Unity Project (a tribute to organist Larry Young and his album Unity). \nUpon returning to New York City in June of 2008\, Pat officially joined The Lou Donaldson’s quartet in 2009. Continuing to play with Lou\, Bianchi also joined Pat Martino’s working trio in 2011 while taking on the responsibilities as musical director. Bianchi is featured on numerous recordings such as Tim Warfield’s Sentimental Journey\, a follow up to Warfield’s recording One For Shirley (on which he also appears) as well as guitarist Chuck Loeb’s release\, Plain and Simple. At this time Bianchi also continued to perform with drummer Ralph Peterson Jr.\, forging ahead with The Unity Project. Bianchi was featured\, recording much of this material on Peterson’s CD Outer Reaches. Soon after Bianchi released his second recording as a leader\, Back Home. This recording features Terell Stafford\, Ralph Peterson Jr.\, Wayne Escoffery\, Carmen Intorre Jr. and Gilad Hekselman. \nBianchi not only continues to collaborate\, tour and record with many well known musicians\, he is also very active in the educational front. Pat has been on faculty at Temple University (Philadelphia\, PA) and Queens College (NYC)\, and is currently on faculty at Berklee College of Music (Boston\, MA).

His no-nonsense style always played a supporting role that was close to the spotlight\, but not too close… Cancer changes things\, and so does losing your father. When all of these things happened in rapid succession Mark took some time to heal\, and reevaluate. In 2010 He put down his bass\, picked up a guitar\, and started writing songs he never thought anybody outside his family would ever hear. It’s possible nobody ever would have heard them either\, if not for the encouragement of his colleagues. His debut album earned him “Record Of The Year” by the Memphis Flyer. Soon he was opening for all his heroes including Leon Russell\, Tony Joe White\, Levon Helm\, and Billy Joe Shaver. Grammy-winning music writer/director Robert Gordon is a big fan\, often spinning Mark’s tracks on his weekly radio show\, and other critics agree: “His acerbic wit is reminiscent of John Prine and Randy Newman” (No Depression); “His wry\, cutting view of the world makes something old new again” (Paste); “Always maintaining a tender demeanor\, his songwriting is smart as it is sincere” (Pop Matters). Quick-witted\, empathetic\, and self-deprecating\, aloof but probably alert of the room tone\, most folks will find themselves compatible with Mark Edgar Stuart\, whose complementary musicality and contagiously honest voice showcase a resilient and relaxed artist\, both sage and seasoned. \nYou’ll have a tough time finding a more widely-embraced modern singer-songwriter in Memphis \nKeith Sykes \nOnce upon a time in the summer of 1967\, Keith Sykes hitchhiked to the Newport Folk Festival and saw Arlo Guthrie perform “Alice’s Restaurant.” In the fall of that year he got a copy of the album\, learned the whole song and sang it at a Holiday Inn in Charleston\, South Carolina. They hired him on the spot for a regular gig playing music in the hotel. It’s pretty perfect that such a rambling tale should be at the start of Keith’s own rambling tale – in the more than 40 years that followed\, he would become a troubadour and storyteller\, a massively successful songwriter with more than 100 songs recorded by artists as diverse as Rosanne Cash and George Thorogood. He would tour every corner of America and play in just about every conceivable kind of venue\, appear on Saturday Night Live and Austin City Limits\, and host songwriter nights on Memphis’ legendary Beale Street with many of music’s most talented songwriters. He would join Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band\, tour the country and record the Volcano album – the title track for which he co-wrote with Jimmy. To date\, recordings of Keith’s songs have sold more than 25 million copies worldwide. With 13 full-length albums released – and great success with his own publishing company\, credited with signing John Kilzer to Geffen Records and the discovery of Todd Snider – Keith Sykes has proven to be nothing short of prolific. \nJimmy Davis \nJimmy Davis’ songs have been recorded by Martina McBride\, Restless Heart\, Tommy Alverson\, Reba Russell\, Walt Wilkins\, as well as a myriad of other recording artists. As a backing vocalist\, Jimmy has lent his extensive vocal talents to projects by numerous recording artists including\, The North Mississippi Allstars\, Jim Dickinson\, Johnny Lang\, Bernie Leadon\, Keith Sykes\, Michael Hearne\, Toy Caldwell\, Susan Marshall\, Mark Collie and William Lee Golden. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Darrius Strong: “The Artist” in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, June 16\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: Free \n\n“The Artist” is a solo showcase performed by artistic director/choreographer Darrius Strong\, in which he touches on layers and humanity of the person behind the artist. For Strong\, movement is real and it acts as a language and sometimes as a therapeutic device. Overlapped with movement phrases\, “The Artist” will also showcase other routine devices he uses throughout his day that tie to the continuous work he does to heal trauma in his body — aspects of the work that are very much read\, true\, and relatable to the human experience for many. We are not just one-sides\, but we have many layers and dimensions to our identity. \nThis piece is a work in progress that Strong plans to explore and evolve throughout the year. \nDarrius Strong is a McKnight Fellow in residency at Crosstown Arts. He is a Twin Cities-based dancer\, choreographer\, and instructor. His dance company\, STRONGmovement\, uses the universal language of dance\, blending styles such as hip hop\, ballet\, modern\, and West African to tell stories related to society and humanity. Strong is a graduate of the University of Minnesota (BFA 2015) and is currently faculty at St. Paul Conservatory Performing Arts High School and director of the hip hop program at Eleve Performing Arts Center\, where he focuses on teaching dancers how to connect their identity to movement. His creative work has been chosen for the Walker Art Center’s Choreographers Evening\, and Rhythmically Speaking.  \nThis residency is supported by Artist Communities Alliance’s (ACA) McKnight Artist Residencies Consortium. This partnership between ACA and the McKnight Foundation supports selected residency program partners in developing fair and just policies\, and provides McKnight Artist Fellows with residency opportunities at these partner programs. This consortium aims to support the development of residency environments where any artist can thrive.

The 65-year-old guitarist is neither a soul modernist nor revivalist\, but simply a small town auto mechanic who’s never shaken his love for old school legends like Muddy\, Wolf and Lightnin’. \nA lifelong resident of tiny Duck Hill\, located in the hills east of the Delta\, Farmer grew up on the family farm. He first took up the acoustic guitar in his early teens\, and through picking cotton soon saved up enough money to buy an electric instrument. \nHe played for audiences at home and at school events\, and learned about blues and R&B mostly through listening to a powerful station out of Nashville. In his early ‘20s Farmer joined a loose knit band that played at juke joints across the area—in Duck Hill\, Grenada\, Kilmichael\, and down in the Delta in Greenwood and Charleston. He eventually tired\, though\, of the rough-and-tumble clubs where “people liked to fight like crazy.” \nFarmer eventually decided he wanted to get back into blues actively. In 2003 he helped found the annual Grassroots Blues Festival\, staged in a meadow outside Duck Hill. Through the event\, he befriended downhome blues players from across the state including Willie King and Leo Welch. \n“The Man From the Hill” marks the first time that he’s spent serious time in the studio. Recorded over multiple sessions at producer Bruce Watson’s Memphis based Delta-Sonic Sound\, Farmer enjoyed working in a North Mississippi Hill Country vein with Jimbo Mathus and session drummer George Sluppick. He even dipped back into gospel\, singing harmony together with Memphis’ Barnes Brothers. \nFor the past thirty years Farmer has run his own auto repair shop\, and hopes that the release of this record and associated touring will allow him to retire. “I’m trying to get out of that shop\, I’m tired of messing with those cars. It’s been a long time.” \nRYAN LEE CROSBY \nThe fingerstyle guitar maven\, songwriter and powerfully emotional performer blends echoes of traditional music from Mississippi\, Mali\, and India into compelling songs that speak from—and to—the heart. His music captures the timeless power of music from the Mississippi Delta\, refracted by influences of Hindustani slide guitar and Crosby’s own unique approach to the style. Recorded in Memphis by Bruce Watson of Fat Possum—the label famous for RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough—it sounds unique\, proudly independent and like a relic from another time.” Mike Greenblatt – GOLDMINE Magazine \nSHAUN MARSH with LYNN GREER \nFrom an early age growing up in the south of England\, Shaun Marsh learned the power and potential of music through his mother\, a performing artist and soul singer in the sixties and seventies. Being introduced to early pop\, rock & roll\, R&B and soul had a profound inspiration on him. It wasn’t until he reached his forties that Shaun began to look back at the origins and true roots of the music that he’d been listening to most of his life. Late one night while tuning in to John Peel on the radio\, he heard “Hellhound On My Trail\,” by Robert Johnson. The raw emotion of that recording compelled him to immerse himself in the early pre war Blues. He began to develop the techniques for playing finger picking style Country and Delta blues from the recordings of the early pioneering musicians who paved the way. It was these rich and lonesome strands of storytelling that brought him to Memphis\, where he continues to study in the shadow of this powerful music that defines this city. His repertoire on solo acoustic guitar ranges from Robert Johnson to Charley Patton\, from Skip James to Big Bill Broonzy. Following the threads of the blues from Memphis he also gets inspiration from such greats as Johnny Cash\, Magic Sam & Otis Redding. He carries on the Texas tenor tradition espoused by great heroes such as the late Houstonians Arnett Cobb and Don Wilkerson who served as his early idols and mentors. He grew up in inner-city Houston\, Texas and was a member of the Kashmere High School Stage Band\, whose director\, the late Conrad Johnson\, is the subject of a documentary\, Thunder Soul\, produced by actor Jamie Foxx. Though never having had private music lessons\, Paul has received several outstanding musician awards at high school and college jazz festivals. \nPaul has recorded 8 CD’s\, which have been well received by critics and jazz fans alike. His new CD “The Real Jazz Whisperer” features Allyn Johnson\, Michael Bowie\, Lewis Nash and will be released September\, 2020. His CD “DC-NYC Organ Sessions” reached #9 on the Jazz Week radio play charts. His CD released in 2013\, “Standard Domain\,” reached #3 on the Jazz Week radio play chart and stayed on the chart for 16 weeks. Paul has toured Russia\, Europe\, the Middle East\, the Caribbean and Central and South America and has shared the stage with many of the greatest names in jazz. Paul was a favorite of President Clinton during his term in office and Paul performed at many of the Clinton’s private events. He also did a special performance for the late King Hussein and Queen Noir of Jordan at their residence in Aqaba\, Jordan. \nPaul is passionately committed to the education of children and young adults\, particularly as it relates to the preservation of jazz. In 2002\, he founded the Jazz Academy of Music\, which hosts summer camps and jazz ensembles for kids throughout the year. Paul also serves the Director of the Gettysburg College Jazz Ensemble. Paul has changed the lives of hundreds of his students by selflessly sharing his knowledge of music and life. Several of his students have been admitted and even received full scholarships to some of the top music schools and conservatories in the country. In fact\, five of Paul students have been admitted to the prestigious Julliard School of Music in New York. Many of his former students are touring and performing all over the world\, sharing the stage with some of the top names in jazz music today. Paul’s work was acknowledged in 2012 by ABC Channel 7 News when he was selected as a “Harris Hero” for his amazing work with music students across the area. In March 2014\, Paul received the prestigious\, Howard University\, “Benny Golson Jazz Master Award”\, for his outstanding work as a performer\, presenter and educator. He also served as a panelist at the 2014 Congressional Black Caucus where he spoke on the importance of jazz education and advocated for a Bill that was circulating in Congress that to offer federal support toward the advancement and preservation of traditional Jazz. In March\, 2015 Paul received the County Executive’s “Education Award” for Montgomery County Maryland. Finally\, in 2019\, Paul was selected as a “Jazz Hero” by the Jazz Journalist Association. \nIn 2010\, Paul re-established the East Coast Jazz Festival as the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival\, and serves as its Executive and Artistic Director. The festival enjoys over 3\,000 attendees that travel from states across the U.S. and beyond. Held every Presidents Day weekend in Rockville\, MD\, the festival incorporates a strong educational component\, with a high school band competition and free master classes for students as well as an entertainment component with performances by NEA Jazz Masters\, such as Benny Golson\, Jimmy Heath\, Ellis Marsalis\, Roy Haynes and Branford Marsalis\, just to name of few. \nIn 2015\, Paul presented his teaching technique for improvisation\, “The Theoryless Approach to Jazz Improvisation”\, at the JEN Conference in San Diego\, to a standing room only audience. The presentation was well received by the audience with many questions and request for a copy of the presentation. Paul also present the techniques at the 2015 Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival to the high school band directors in attendance. \nWhen you think of an ambassador for jazz music today\, you have got to include Paul Carr in that grouping\, as his work touches all fronts including jazz education\, performance and presentation.

The seven-piece ensemble also includes renowned drummer Brian Blade\, bassist Rodney Jordan\, tenor saxophonist Robert “Bobby LaVell” Garner\, trumpeter Marc Franklin\, and alto saxophonist Chad Fowler. The band will perform the world premiere of new works written by and in collaboration with Memphis artists\, including saxophonist Robert “Bobby LaVell” Garner. A new arrangement of Memphis pianist Donald Brown’s song “Poem for Martin\,” written by Marc Franklin\, as well as selections previously written by Oliver Lake\, Parker\, and Hurt\, in honor of the Little Rock Nine will also be performed. Poet and spoken word artist Treasure Shields Redmond\, and dancer Ashley Tate will also join the ensemble as special guests for both concerts.

In honor of Pride month\, this celebration of queer Black voices in roots music will feature Carmen Dianne\, Josey\, and Julia Cannon. \nCARMEN DIANNE is a Nashville born and raised singer-songwriter\, vocalist\, and bassist. Carmen finds that the most interesting people don’t really fit into one box\, so their music shouldn’t either. By blending genres like R&B with southern rock and country\, Carmen hopes to create a sound as natural and familiar as it is ear-catching and original. With her soulful\, angelic voice and deft songwriting skill\, Carmen Dianne illustrates stories of regret\, hope\, willpower and sheer bliss with a striking sincerity that shows that this singer won’t be going anywhere soon. \nJOSEY was crowned the winner of the talent competition “The Fame Chicago” before graduating from Columbia College Chicago with a Bachelor of Music and moving to Nashville to pursue her songwriting career. Her talents have led her to perform at numerous venues such as The Chicago Theatre\, The Metro\, Auditorium Theatre\, Exit/IN and with gifted musicians such as Diane Warren\, Corey Henry and Shawn Mullins. With her eclectic sound\, soaring vocals and compelling lyrics\, Josey is creating her own path within music. \nJULIA CANNON is a Nashville-based songwriter\, recording artist and music producer who is hard to forget.
