SUMMARY:Lukah
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Lukah in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nThursday\, November 30\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nPermanently Blackface is Lukah’s furious\, visionary indictment of the American state of exception\, presented with unforgettable vocal delivery and haunting instrumentals produced by “The Usual Suspects”. For a special one-night engagement\, Lukah will perform the new album for the first and only time in its entirety. Accompanied by a live jazz band\, this will be a special opportunity to experience Permanently Blackface the way the artist intended: in one sitting\, with undivided attention directed at its narrator. Witness the bold\, fearless inversion of minstrel tradition in this poignant commentary on the Black Experience.  \nIntroducing himself as Mr. Blackface\, Lukah identifies the true artist’s responsibility to hold a mirror to the listener in order to confront and disarm taboos. In both content and music\, the record balances vulgarity and introspection\, the horror of silence\, and the comfort of colossal\, discordant sound. Over 12 songs the celestial\, often blood-soaked color palette of soul and R&B that gave emotional weight to previous masterworks Why Look Up\, Gods in The Mirror and Raw Extractions has been scraped away like a charred skeleton. With a small cast of voices consisting entirely of Lukah’s immediate family\, and production duties handled in-house by WALZ\, Deener\, Hollow Sol\, Cities Aviv\, SB11\, and Lukah himself\, the record has the intimacy of a theater production. \nThis performance will be filmed. \n  \nLukah \nLukah has set himself apart as a powerful voice in Memphis hip-hop. Whatever the format—whether it’s through sellout records\, acclaimed locally in The Commercial Appeal and nationally in NPR\, Bandcamp Daily\, and The New York Times; commanding live performances that have won audiences in The United States and Europe; or on the big screen in his three visual collaborations with Studio 143\, all selected by the Indie Memphis Film Festival—Lukah is a undeniable giant of deep\, meaningful storytelling. Back from his first international headlining tour and a recent performance opening for Noname\, Lukah continues to push the envelope and challenge himself creatively by preparing this bold concert. \nOpening act and accompanied by live jazz quintet Hope Clayburn’s Soul Scrimmage. \nSoul-Jazz-Funk sax player and vocalist Hope Clayburn is on a mission to move the people. Her unique style has allowed her to perform with an eclectic mix of artists around the world\, including The Temptations\, The Allman Brothers Band\, and Valerie June. Hope can be found in Memphis\, TN recording and performing with a variety of bands like Lucky 7 Brass Band\, Frog Squad\, Marcella Simien and Obruni Danceband She has her own funk soul ensemble HOPE CLAYBURN’S SOUL SCRIMMAGE performing her original music. Their new single and music video NOBODY is out now on YouTube and look out for their new album and vinyl record Y’ALL SO LOUD coming this December with the album release party on Saturday December 16 at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts.

SUMMARY:Paul Taylor with Three Springs
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Paul Taylor with Three Springs in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, November 17\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nLongtime Memphis musician Paul Taylor is returning home to play his first show back in the Bluff City in over three and a half years! \nHe’s bringing his brand new band\, Three Springs\, along with him all the way down from his new home of Door County\, Wisconsin\, to help him perform material he’s written during those last few years\, which has been greatly inspired by the vastly different northern environment. \nPaul Taylor was a mainstay on the Memphis music scene for over 30 years- until he relocated to Door County\, Wisconsin\, during the great shake up of the 2020 pandemic. \nAs a highly in-demand drummer\, bassist\, and guitarist\, he’s been a sideman for a wildly divergent list of artists including Ann Peebles\, Reba Russell\, The PRVLG\, Hope Clayburn\, Mighty Souls Brass Band\, Eric Gales\, Shawn Lane\, Amy LaVere\, North Mississippi Allstars\, Sons Of Mudboy\, Van Duren\, Chuck Prophet\, Robert Ellis and many more — in addition to putting out three solo records under his own name and three releases under his moniker\, New Memphis Colorways. \nHis last performance in Memphis was over three years ago at The Green Room in Crosstown Arts\, a record release party for the New Memphis Colorways record entitled “The Music Stands.” \nIn 2021\, Paul made a major departure from his more song-oriented records when he released an experimental funk/jazz record\, also under the nom de plume New Memphis Colorways\, entitled “It Is What It Isn’t”\, which earned an editor’s pick in Downbeat and favorable reviews from Jazziz and other national publications.  \nEarlier this year\, an experimental instrumental music collaboration between Paul and longtime collaborators Luther Dickinson and Steve Selvidge\, entitled MEM_MODS Vol 1 (Peabody Records)\, was released to much critical acclaim. \nA forthcoming New Memphis Colorways EP\, “Let The Mystery Be” is due out on October 13\, 2023. \nThree Springs is a brand-new indie rock-ish\, at times slightly funky and experimental\, band out of Door County\, Wisconsin. \nThe group was formed by Memphis transplant Paul Taylor as an outlet for many of his songs and instrumentals\, which have previously only existed in recorded form on solo releases under his own name (and his nom de plume New Memphis Colorways)\, but has turned into a vehicle for new material written specifically for\, and with\, the band.  \nRounding out the trio are Door County native Shepley Frater on bass and Minominee\, Michigan\, native Adam Cain on drums.

SUMMARY:Folk All Y’all: Ellisa Sun & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts and Folk All Y’all present Ellisa Sun & Friends in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, November 11\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $25 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nEllisa Sun cuts her heart out and leaves it on the stage\, which is why she never wears white. Inspired primarily by R&B\, soul\, jazz\, and bossa nova\, Ellisa’s music is a unique blend of genres that creates a textured sound with authentic\, heartfelt lyricism. \nSelf-described “naked cowboy artist” Emily Ronna is going to give it to you raw – whether that’s the reality of mental health or the details of last night’s hookup. There’s no shame in this alt-rock-indie-folk game. \nOriginally hailing from Kansas\, Ian DePriest followed the Yellow Brick Road to Music City\, Nashville. Drawing from a musical theater background\, his artistic expression would manifest itself into melodies of pop tied in with theatrical musings. SUMMARY:Marcella Simien
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Marcella Simien in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, November 10\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nMarcella Simien was born into one of the first Creole families to settle St. Landry Parish. Daughter of two-time GRAMMY™ award winning Zydeco luminary Terrance Simien\, Marcella was practically born onstage and grew up immersed in sound and performance. Visits to the family home from legends such as David Hidalgo of Los Lobos or Taj Mahal\, who once sang her “Happy Birthday\,” were not uncommon.  \nSimien holds a degree from Memphis College of Art\, which is what originally brought her to Memphis\, Tennessee. Feeling a kindred connection to the city’s rich history and bustling community of working musicians\, she began planting the seeds of her South Louisiana heritage in the Bluff City. She has since forged her own pathways in the local\, national\, and international music scenes\, following her heart as an artist while wielding the torch of a Creole dynasty. \nSimien founded and serves as bandleader in Marcella & Her Lovers — a hybrid of classic Memphis soul with the freewheeling swagger of New Orleans funk. Featuring an ensemble cast of Memphis musicians\, Simien emerges as an undeniably powerful frontwoman. With each angelic holler and pump of the Creole accordion\, she reinvents the mold of Memphis music while giving a wink and a nod to her ancestors. In addition to Marcella & Her Lovers\, Simien performs with Marcella & Les Vagues\, Magnolias\, and Terrance Simien’s Krewe De Monifique.  \n  \n“One of the most soulful artists I’ve heard since the glory days of Memphis soul music. Her sound and stage presence is a constant reminder that soul music is still alive and well.”\n— Boo Mitchell\, GRAMMY Winning Engineer \n“. . . she’s the daughter of zydeco great Terrance Simien\, but she needs no pedigree to knock you flat.”\n— Malcolm Jones\, The Daily Beast

It is a special occasion for the quartet\, celebrating the release of their second album\, “Live at Vision Festival XXVI\,” and launching a national tour. Attendees can look forward to an evening that subtly blends jazz and folk elements with collaborative improvisation and the varied influences each member adds to the quartet’s collective sound. \nThis performance is made possible with the support of Jazz Road\, a national initiative of South Arts\, which is funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.  \n\nThe Musicians \nWilliam Parker\nWilliam Parker first came to public attention playing with pianist Cecil Taylor. He played with saxophonist David S. DESCRIPTION:The Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nMonday\, October 2\, 2023\nTime: 6-8 pm\nTickets: Free \nREGISTER HERE \nShain Shapiro launches his new book\, This Must Be the Place: How Music Can Make Your City Better\, in conversation with Music Export Memphis’ Elizabeth Cawein. \nPresented by: Crosstown Arts\, University of Memphis School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy and Rhodes College Curb Institute. \nJoin Shain as he launches his book in one of the homes of American music — Memphis. Not the influence cities have on music\, but the powerful impact music can have on how cities are developed\, built\, managed and governed. Told in an accessible way through personal stories from cities around the world — including London\, Melbourne\, Nashville\, Austin and Zurich — This Must Be the Place takes a truly global perspective on the ways music is integral to everyday life but neglected in public policy. Arguing for the transformative role of artists and musicians in a post-pandemic world\, This Must Be The Place not only examines the powerful impact music can have on our cities\, but also serves as a how-to guide and toolkit for music-lovers\, artists and activists everywhere to begin the process of reinventing the communities they live in.

SUMMARY:Hermon Mehari & Peter Schlamb Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Hermon Mehari & Peter Schlamb Quartet in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, September 20\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 day of the show \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nThe performers:\nHermon Mehari – trumpet\nPeter Schlamb – vibraphone\nBob DeBoo – bass\nJoe Hibbs – drums \nIn the attempt to pioneer a new sound while exploring his Eritrean origins\, trumpeter Hermon Mehari composed an album entirely influenced by the harmonies\, rhythms\, and melodies of Eritrean music. However this work\, “Asmara” (Komos)\, doesn’t only come from his musical side — the songs have an emotional bent and express the different aspects of his perspectives towards his relationship with family and the culture. Hermon Mehari’s 2020 sophomore album as a leader\, “A Change For the Dreamlike” (MiRR)\, takes on a more personal tone. Written and recorded in a barn in the French countryside during le confinement\, it shows only hints at the aesthetic set by his previous debut album. Although he already had a growing reputation\, the success of Mehari’s debut album \,”Bleu”\, put him concretely on the musical map in 2017. “Bleu” includes ECM recording artist Aaron Parks on piano\, Blue Note recording artist Logan Richardson on alto saxophone\, Peter Schlamb on vibraphone\, Ryan J. Lee on drums and Rick Rosato on bass. \nMehari was the winner of the 2015 Carmine Caruso International Trumpet Competition and a semifinalist in the 2014 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition. In 2014 he released the CD “Our Journey” with Diverse\, his second with the group. Mehari maintains a touring schedule around the world with his own group and as a sideman. Mehari was also the winner of the 2008 National Trumpet Competition and placed 2nd in the International Trumpet Guild competition in Sydney\, Australia. As a founding member of Diverse\, whose eponymous debut album on Seattle-based Origin Records reached the Top 40 on the Jazzweek Radio Charts\, he has performed professionally with noted saxophonists Jaleel Shaw\, Logan Richardson\, Bobby Watson\, Ben Van Gelder\, and Tivon Pennicott. He has also performed with Aaron Parks\, Joe Sanders\, Hubert Laws\, Randy Brecker\, Tony Tixier\, Dave Pietro\, Clay Jenkins and many other great musicians. \nHermon Mehari received his BM in Jazz Performance from the University of Missouri – Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance in 2010. In addition to performing\, he dedicates himself to being a serious educator\, runs a weekly musical radio program called “The Session” on the NPR-affiliated station KCUR 89.3\, is an artistic director of the Collectif MiRR and has participated in arts related clinics and panels around the world. \nPeter Schlamb is a vibraphonist and pianist based in Kansas City\, MO. He recently released second album “Electric Tinks” and maintains a busy schedule performing locally\, nationally and internationally. Peter spent several years in New York where he attended and graduated from New School University. During his time in New York\, he recorded and performed with artists including Logan Richardson\, David Binney\, Mike Moreno\, and Ben van Gelder. Peter currently leads the group Electric Tinks and is a member of Logan Richardson’s Blues People as well as frequently performing with several other ensembles around the world.

SUMMARY:The Brandee Younger Trio (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Brandee Younger in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, September 15\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: SOLD OUT \nThe sonically innovative harpist\, Brandee Younger\, is revolutionizing harp for the digital era. Over the past fifteen years\, she has worked relentlessly to stretch boundaries and limitations for harpists. In 2022\, she made history by becoming the first Black woman to be nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. That same year\, she was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Ever-expanding as an artist\, she has worked with cultural icons including Common\, Lauryn Hill\, John Legend\, and Moses Sumney. Her current album\, Brand New Life\, builds on her already rich oeuvre\, and cements the harp’s place in pop culture. As the title of the album suggests\, Brand New Life is about forging new paths–artistic\, personal\, political\, and spiritual. On this album\, Younger salutes her musical foremother\, the trailblazing harpist Dorothy Ashby\, while also speaking to the sentiments of more recent generations. “We’re bringing new life to Dorothy Ashby’s popular and previously unreleased compositions. We’re creating new life…for the instrument\,” Younger said. Brand New Life is an album about living fully\, in neon bright color. \nIn March of 2022\, Younger flew to Chicago and began recording Brand New Life in the home studio of her long time collaborator and friend\, Makaya McCraven\, who both produced and played drums on the album. In the Windy City\, Younger hoped to harness some of Ashby’s funky energy from a recording she did there nearly five decades before. Younger gathered artists who have had a sense of kinship with Ashby; from the internationally-lauded neo-soul bassist/vocalist/rapper Meshell Ndegeocello\, to her long-time bassist Rashaan Carter\, plus the legendary rapper and producer Pete Rock and the talented contemporary producer 9th Wonder. The latter producers introduced hip hop and R&B listeners to Ashby in the 1990s and early 2000s via slick samples. Pete Rock and CL Smooth’s 1992 release\, “For Pete’s Sake\,” samples Ashby’s 1968 hit “Come Live With Me.” 9th Wonder’s remix of singer Amerie’s 2003 R&B classic “Why Don’t We Fall in Love\,” also includes a Dorothy Ashby sample from “Come Live With Me.” With Younger’s solo rendition of this heavily sampled song on Brand New Life\, she builds a sonic bridge between generations. “I wanted everyone on the record to have a special connection to Dorothy [Ashby]\,” she said. For the project\, Younger also recorded a number of Ashby’s compositions that were never recorded before\, alongside Ashby fan favorites and Younger originals. \nThe emotional complexity of the album is stunningly captured in the title track\, “Brand New Life\,” an original co-written by Younger and singer\, Mumu Fresh. “This love is so deep\, time and space couldn’t keep you away from me\,” Mumu Fresh sings. Younger’s playing paints lush details over Mumu Fresh’s smooth vocals leaving nothing to be sonically desired. Against the backdrop of current social issues–climate change\, racism\, health disparities\, and women’s rights–the song speaks to a desire that many people have for change\, for something new in the world. “Brand New Life” reaches listeners at the level of the human. \nLove is a subtle but insistent thread throughout the album. The opening track\, “You’re a Girl For One Man Only\,” is a previously unrecorded Dorothy Ashby composition. Sonically\, it is tender and evocative of a first kiss or the early seasons of new romance. Younger recalls the original song’s lyrics’ more traditional message of romantic longing that we still hear in popular music today. Boy chases girl. Girl succumbs. In Younger’s version\, there is a sense of agency and exploration. Younger creates a mesmerizing atmosphere. In the second half of the track we are met with a delicate dance between Joel Ross on vibraphone and Younger on harp\, the two instruments pining through the melody. \nBrand New Life is part of her steadfast efforts to amplify the contributions of black women harpists and to keep their legacies alive. Her care for and attention to Dorothy Ashby as a musical ancestor has been consistent throughout her career. Akin to the popular hashtag\, #CiteBlackWomen\, which demands that consumers credit and recognize black women for their intellectual labor\, Younger urges us to recognize Ashby’s contribution to the American songbook. The album is part of a larger project of recognizing not only the history of innovators of distinguished harp – a history that places Ashby and Younger together on a continuum – but also the presence of everyday black women. \n“Running Game” was an obscure seven-inch single release originally entitled “Double Talkin’” and featured Ashby on piano. In the song’s intro\, we hear what sounds like a casual conversation at a black women’s beauty salon or at a social gathering of sorts where women freely share advice and observations on life with one another. The voices in the intro are of Younger’s mother and aunt. Younger sets up listeners by reading the lyrics from Ashby’s original. “Every man I meet is double talkin.’ Where did the good men go?” The women candidly respond to the song lyrics. One says\, “As far as game\, men have been running game since day one.” The track leads into\, “Running Game\,” a ballad with inflections of Negro spirituals and the blues. Here\, Younger’s expressivity on her instrument is incomparable. As the strings (arranged by DeSean Jones) hum behind her\, the “double-talking” gold-digging man comes into full view. “Running-Game” ends on a note of optimism\, of marching forward despite life’s struggle. \nYounger was born and raised in Hempstead\, New York. As a teen in the early 1990s\, she bopped to the beats of artists like LL Cool J\, Queen Latifah\, and Busta Rhymes. Among these hip hop greats\, she discovered Ashby’s music by way of hip hop legend Pete Rock. She began playing harp at the age of eleven and eventually enrolled at the Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford in Connecticut where she studied classical music. It was through the encouragement of legendary saxophonist Jackie McLean that she made her first foray into jazz with the harp. \nHearing Ashby for the first time led her to envision new possibilities for herself as a harpist. “She was covering all of these popular tunes and soundtracks [of the time] and I wanted to do that. She’s playing pop\, jazz and everyone’s sampling her–DJ Premier\, Pete Rock\, J. Dilla. Hearing\, then seeing her as a Black Woman\, while I’m this random little isolated black girl playing a harp by myself was everything to me.” Younger forged her way with a small but mighty group of black women harpists as examples—Sarah Lawrence from her hometown\, Ann Hobson-Pilot\, Dorothy Ashby\, and Alice Coltrane—who were consistent sources of inspiration. \nIn 2006\, after graduating from the Hartt School\, Younger went on to develop a name for herself on the jazz and commercial recording scene in New York City. To date\, her performance roster is fierce. As a side-woman\, she has played alongside jazz icons such as Pharoah Sanders\, Ravi Coltrane\, Jack DeJohnette and Reggie Workman. Younger’s commitment to carrying the torch can also be seen through her work as a performer and educator. In 2008\, she earned a Master of Music from New York University’s Steinhardt School. During this time\, she began to work seriously as an educator. She has been guest faculty and lecturer at numerous universities including but not limited to Berklee College of Music\, Princeton University\, Howard University and Tulane University. Currently\, she serves as teaching artist faculty at New York University and The New School. \nIn 2020\, Younger was named winner of the DownBeat Critics Poll in the category of “Rising Star” harpist. Her work as side-woman is evidence of Younger’s undeniable presence in the sound of contemporary jazz today. In recent years\, she has appeared on albums by Lakecia Benjamin\, Robert Glasper\, Jeremy Pelt\, The Baylor Project and Makaya McCraven\, just to name a few. In addition to her contributions as a side-woman\, Younger’s commitment to honoring the legacy of black women harpists can be seen through her curatorial work. She has curated a number of performances dedicated to honoring the work of Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane. This work speaks to her dedication as a purveyor of black music and history.

A powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster-child for intersectionality\,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” A former drum major and classically-trained clarinetist turned folk singer\, Matthews is using her voice to answer Dr. Martin Luther King’s call to be “a drum major for justice.” Crys Matthews’s thoughtful\, realistic and emotional songs speak to the voice of our generation and remind us why music indeed soothes the soul. \nThe show is at 7:30 pm with doors opening at 7 pm. These two virtuosic multi-instrumentalists fuse their respective Venezuelan and Appalachian folk traditions on the harp\, banjo\, cuatro\, fiddle\, upright bass\, guitar\, and maracas to prove that music has no borders. Their bilingual (esp / eng) program includes storytelling\, humor\, and singalongs. \nFULL BIO \nENGLISH \nLarry & Joe were destined to make music together. \nLarry Bellorín hails from Monagas\, Venezuela and is a legend of Llanera music. Joe Troop is from North Carolina and is a GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime musician. Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. Joe\, after a decade in South America\, got stranded back in his stomping grounds in the pandemic. Larry worked construction to make ends meet. Joe’s acclaimed “latingrass” band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus\, and he shifted into action working with asylum seeking migrants. Then Larry met Joe. \nCurrently based in the Triangle of North Carolina\, both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders. As a duo they perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp\, banjo\, cuatro\, fiddle\, maracas\, guitar\, upright bass\, and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions as well as storytelling about the ways that music and social movements coalesce. \nSPANISH \nLarry & Joe estaban destinados a hacer música juntos. Entonces Larry conoció a Joe.

Improvisation is a specialty of both performers\, and they will often “go off the beaten track” often in order to keep every show fresh and spontaneous. \nAlice Hasen and Josh Threlkeld”s collaborative EP\, “The Aisling Farm Sessions\,” drops August 25\, 2023. This six-track project will be a formal introduction to the Memphis duo.  Both Hasen and Threlkeld come from strong instrumental backgrounds\, with cumulative decades of experience in both the classical and folk worlds. The pair loves to go to spontaneous and unexpected places\, and this project reflects that passion (the first song is entitled “Off the Beaten”). From there\, Threlkeld reinterprets an Old Time fiddle tune\, “Angeline the Baker\,” and Hasen evokes wistful longing for her Vermont roots with “Come Round.” Songs covered include Van Morrison’s “Moondance\,” “Promentory” (from The Last of the Mohicans)\, and “Achilles Jig” in a special nod to fiddler Bill Thurman. “The Aisling Farm Sessions” was recorded live in March 2023 in Limerick cabin\, on Len and Susan Lawhon’s Aisling Farm. \nBio: \nAlice Hasen and Josh Threlkeld combine instrumental virtuosity\, creative songwriting and a rainbow of tonal colors in Memphis’ newest duo act. From reinventions of old fiddle tunes to subversive and dynamic improvisation\, the pair transports their audience to vibrant and unexpected soundscapes. Inspired by spontaneity\, Alice and Josh assure that no one performance will ever resemble the next.
