DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Modern Masters Jazz Series: Dan Wilson and The Ted Ludwig Trio in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, February 7\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door | $10 student tickets \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE\n \n\n\n\nGrowing up in Akron\, Ohio\, Dan Wilson spent the majority of his youth within the church community\, where his musical path began. \n\n\n\nTraces of his major guitar influences – including Wes Montgomery\, Charlie Christian\, Joe Pass\, and George Benson to name a few – can be discerned through his playing\, but his musical identity has been shaped by everything from gospel and blues to traditional jazz\, hip-hop and horn players like Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson. \n\n\n\nWilson has had the honor of sharing the stage with jazz greats including Eric Marienthal\, Russell Malone\, Les McCann\, René Marie\, Jeff Hamilton\, David Sanborn and Dave Stryker. He also teaches jazz guitar and music theory through private lessons. \n\n\n\nWilson’s career took him on an exploratory journey into foundations laid down by the guitar/organ tradition\, eventually leading to an invitation to perform with jazz great Joey DeFrancesco’s trio quartet\, with which Wilson went on to earn a GRAMMY® Award nomination with for DeFrancesco’s Project Freedom album (Mack Avenue Records\, 2017).

Composer\, musicologist\, and winner of MacArthur and Guggenheim fellowships\, George Lewis is currently the Artistic Director of the International Contemporary Ensemble and has written extensively on American experimental music\, race\, and the decolonization of contemporary music. His music is presented alongside another masterpiece for the modern quintet\, De Memorias by Cuban-American composer Tania León. The City of Tomorrow’s specialty is creating immersive experiences\, in which audiences are carried from one piece to the next in a transformative musical art installation. \nThe City of Tomorrow is an experimental wind quintet with a fearless aesthetic and a commitment to 21st-century music. Their U.S. tours have included concerts at Trinity Wall Street\, Spectrum\, and IN\TER/SECT\, (co-presented by Bryant Park and Chamber Music America) as well as the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Series in Chicago\, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival in Michigan\, and Red Note New Music Festival in Illinois. The quintet’s work has been supported by residencies at the Banff Center for the Arts & Creativity and the Avaloch Farm Music Institute. \nTheir 2021 release Blow on New Focus Recordings (FCR294) features music by Esa-Pekka Salonen and Franco Donatoni\, and the world premiere recording of a work by Han Lash\, which was supported by a Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant. The City of Tomorrow’s first album\, Nature\, released on PARMA/Ravello in 2014\, wrestled with questions of human involvement in the natural world and included music by David Lang\, Luciano Berio\, Nat Evans\, and Denys Bouliane. \nIn 2015\, the quintet began exploring physical movement and spatial relationships in their concert programming. Collaborating with lighting designer Alex Deahl\, the quintet has experimented with an ensemble-controlled lighting setup and choreography to create a seamless and immersive musical experience. \nThe City of Tomorrow’s members are based in New York\, Boston\, Baton Rouge\, and Memphis and are in demand as new music specialists\, curators\, collaborators\, and teachers. As an ensemble\, they have been in residence at Vermont College of Fine Arts\, Berklee College of Music\, Indiana University\, Tufts\, and Yale. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Modern Masters Jazz Series: Wes “Warmdaddy” Anderson and The Ted Ludwig Trio in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, January 24\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door | $10 student tickets \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE\n \n\n\nJazz alto and sopranino saxophonist Wessell “Warmdaddy” Anderson played jazz early on at the urging of his father\, who was a drummer. He played in local clubs from his early teenage years\, and studied at the Jazzmobile workshops with Frank Wess\, Charles Davis\, and Frank Foster. He also met Branford Marsalis\, who convinced him to study with Alvin Batiste at Southern University in Louisiana. \n  \n\n\n\nSoon after this\, Anderson began touring with the Wynton Marsalis Septet\, and collaborated with Marsalis through the middle of the 1990s. He continued to play with Marsalis’s Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra beyond this. In 1994\, he released his debut album on Atlantic Records; pianist Eric Reed and bassist Ben Wolfe were among those who played as sidemen. His 1998 album Live at the Village Vanguard featured trumpeter Irvin Mayfield\, bassist Steve Kirby\, pianist Xavier Davis\, and drummer Jaz Sawyer.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Paul Taylor with Three Springs in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, November 17\, 2023\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nLongtime Memphis musician Paul Taylor is returning home to play his first show back in the Bluff City in over three and a half years! \nHe’s bringing his brand new band\, Three Springs\, along with him all the way down from his new home of Door County\, Wisconsin\, to help him perform material he’s written during those last few years\, which has been greatly inspired by the vastly different northern environment. \nPaul Taylor was a mainstay on the Memphis music scene for over 30 years- until he relocated to Door County\, Wisconsin\, during the great shake up of the 2020 pandemic. \nAs a highly in-demand drummer\, bassist\, and guitarist\, he’s been a sideman for a wildly divergent list of artists including Ann Peebles\, Reba Russell\, The PRVLG\, Hope Clayburn\, Mighty Souls Brass Band\, Eric Gales\, Shawn Lane\, Amy LaVere\, North Mississippi Allstars\, Sons Of Mudboy\, Van Duren\, Chuck Prophet\, Robert Ellis and many more — in addition to putting out three solo records under his own name and three releases under his moniker\, New Memphis Colorways. \nHis last performance in Memphis was over three years ago at The Green Room in Crosstown Arts\, a record release party for the New Memphis Colorways record entitled “The Music Stands.” \nIn 2021\, Paul made a major departure from his more song-oriented records when he released an experimental funk/jazz record\, also under the nom de plume New Memphis Colorways\, entitled “It Is What It Isn’t”\, which earned an editor’s pick in Downbeat and favorable reviews from Jazziz and other national publications.  \nEarlier this year\, an experimental instrumental music collaboration between Paul and longtime collaborators Luther Dickinson and Steve Selvidge\, entitled MEM_MODS Vol 1 (Peabody Records)\, was released to much critical acclaim. \nA forthcoming New Memphis Colorways EP\, “Let The Mystery Be” is due out on October 13\, 2023. \nThree Springs is a brand-new indie rock-ish\, at times slightly funky and experimental\, band out of Door County\, Wisconsin. \nThe group was formed by Memphis transplant Paul Taylor as an outlet for many of his songs and instrumentals\, which have previously only existed in recorded form on solo releases under his own name (and his nom de plume New Memphis Colorways)\, but has turned into a vehicle for new material written specifically for\, and with\, the band.  \nRounding out the trio are Door County native Shepley Frater on bass and Minominee\, Michigan\, native Adam Cain on drums.

An accomplished classical performer as well\, he’s often called upon to augment the woodwind section of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. This group of free jazz improvisers came together in New York in 2021 with a plan to spontaneously compose new folk music\, a task made richer by the diverse cultural backgrounds each member brings to the table. Yamamoto originates from Kyoto\, Japan; Fowler from Arkansas; Hirsh is a New York native currently living in the Minnesota wilderness; and Parker is a key figure in the New York avant-garde movement. \nThis concert is the first stop on a national tour that will take the group along the Mississippi River to Iowa and Minnesota. It is a special occasion for the quartet\, celebrating the release of their second album\, “Live at Vision Festival XXVI\,” and launching a national tour. Attendees can look forward to an evening that subtly blends jazz and folk elements with collaborative improvisation and the varied influences each member adds to the quartet’s collective sound. \nThis performance is made possible with the support of Jazz Road\, a national initiative of South Arts\, which is funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.  \n\nThe Musicians \nWilliam Parker\nWilliam Parker first came to public attention playing with pianist Cecil Taylor. He played with saxophonist David S. Ware from 1989 until his last concert performance in 2011. He’s led the Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra and In Order to Survive and is a member of the Other Dimensions In Music and many of Peter Brötzmann’s groups. He’s closely associated with the Vision Festival. \nEri Yamamoto\nEri Yamamoto has been sharing her uniquely lyrical and evocative music with listeners in the U.S.\, Canada\, Europe\, Japan\, Africa\, Jamaica\, and Australia. “She has a deft sense of harmony and note selection…her virtuosity never gets in the way of playing it straight from the heart.” -Daniel A. Brown\, DownBeat “My hat’s off to her… already she’s found her own voice.” – Herbie Hancock \nChad Fowler\nChad Fowler started his music career in Memphis\, Tennessee\, playing soul music alongside some of the city’s most revered artists\, such as Ann Peebles and the Hi Rhythm section\, and then in a number of avant-garde jazz groups. He has played and recorded with Alvin Fielder\, William Parker\, Brian Blade\, Reggie Workman\, Andrew Cyrille\, Matthew Shipp\, Douglas Ewart\, Kidd Jordan\, Christopher Parker\, and WC Anderson. \nSteve Hirsh\nSteve Hirsh plays music on the drumset. Like it was a piano. Or a symphony orchestra. His touch can be light as a caress or as intense as a jack hammer. In his hands (and feet)\, the drum set is a kaleidoscope of colors\, sounds and moods. Choro is an enormously appealing musical style that originated in Brazil over 100 years ago and is now popular internationally. \n\n\n\n\nIn Brazil\, Choro das 3 has been featured on national television\, played for the president\, and played for huge audiences at national festivals. The band toured the US annually from 2013 to 2019\, playing concert venues\, festivals\, and universities from coast to coast. They’ve also toured internationally and have released 11 CDs. \nOf the three sisters in the band\, (family name Meyer)\, Corina plays flute and piccolo\, Lia plays acoustic 7-string guitar\, and Elisa\, who writes many of their tunes\, plays mandolin\, clarinet\, banjo\, piano\, and accordion. From the time of the band’s founding\, their father\, Eduardo\, played percussion. Tragically\, he died from Covid early in the pandemic. This is the band’s first US tour since the pandemic.

An endorsed artist for P. Mauriat saxophones\, The Boston Sax Shop and Key Leaves\, Adam began playing saxophone at the age of 11. Described by critic Howard Reich of The Chicago-Tribune as “a player for whom the word ‘prodigious’ was coined”\, by Peter Hum of the Ottawa Citizen as “a saxophonist who brings Donny McCaslin and Mark Turner to mind”\, and by Nate Chinen of The New York Times as “the sort of jazz musician who gets flagged early on as a promising talent and then hustles to meet every requirement for success”\, Larson has garnered numerous awards that distinguish him as one of the most promising artists of his generation. Upon graduating from high school in 2008\, Adam moved to New York City to pursue his BM and MM in Jazz Performance on full-scholarship from The Manhattan School\, finishing his studies in 2014. \nLarson has released seven albums; two for Outside In\, one for Ropeadope Records\, two under the Inner Circle Music label and two produced independently. Larson’s most recent record “With Love\, From Chicago”\, received a rare 4.5 Star rating from DownBeat magazine and was featured in JazzTimes Magazine\, among other national media outlets. \nLarson keeps an active schedule with his own groups and as a sideman\, having performed at several venues across the U.S. including The Green Mill\, The Jazz Standard\, Birdland\, The 55 Bar\, The Jazz Gallery\, The Blue Note\, The Village Vanguard\, Smalls\, Jazz at The Bistro\, The Jazz Estate\, The Jazz Showcase\, Dazzle\, Noce\, The Jewell and several others. \nMusic has allowed Adam to see more of the world than he once thought possible\, having toured Poland\, India\,Taiwan\, Holland\, and Germany as well much of the United States. Larson’s Trio received a South Arts “Jazz Road Touring Grant” in 2022 and In 2015 Larson’s quartet was selected as one of ten ensembles to tour on behalf of the U.S. State Department’s “American Music Abroad”program and toured Africa for 35 days visiting The Democratic Republic of Congo\, Senegal\, Benin and Ghana. \nBeyond maintaining an active touring and recording schedule\, Larson continues to be a sought after clinician and masterclass presenter and has been a guest at more than seventy-five Universities across the world. Appearances include visits to HKU Conservatory-Utrecht\, Temple University\, Yale\, Manhattan School of Music\, and University of North Texas among many others. Larson is currently on faculty at UMKC Conservatory where he teaches classes in the Arts Entrepreneurship program and previously taught jazz saxophone\, music business and pedagogy. In addition to his duties at UMKC\, Larson has a diverse private lesson studio of online students from the U.S. and abroad. \nAdam has authored 12 jazz etude books that have been sold in over 45 countries and States. He has created and released a successful online masterclass dedicated exclusively to developing great technique\, called “Lightning-Fast and Crystal- Clean”. He maintains an impressive portfolio of commissioned ensemble writing for school jazz ensembles\, having written more than thirty original works to date. Adam was commissioned by the Illinois Music Educators Association to compose the All-State composition for the 2020 convention\, where he directed the Honors Jazz Band. Larson has also directed the South Dakota All-State Jazz Combo. \nWith a vested interest in giving back\, Larson has also worked in various capacities with organizations that showcase exceptional young talent in the United States. Adam has served as a mentor for the Grammy Foundation and as an adjudicator for the Monterey Jazz Festival Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and YoungArts organization.

Originally from Corinth\, Mississippi\, Ricketts has crafted a body of work as diverse and eclectic as the influences and historical complexities that inform his creations. Whether as a solo artist\, a member of an ensemble\, or a sideman in the projects of his friends\, Ricketts continues to explore sound and push the boundaries of each of his creative roles. \nFor this performance\, Ricketts (piano/vocals/electronics) will be joined by the Vanishing Imaginary Orchestra\, a small ensemble featuring Julia Rice (guitar)\, Dylan Van Zile (bass)\, and Kole Oakes (tapes/synthesizer/samples). This performance ensemble recreates and reimagines songs from Ricketts’ wide-ranging catalogue\, bringing them to life with a mix of tight arrangements\, adventurous improvisation\, and expansive audio exploration. However this work\, “Asmara” (Komos)\, doesn’t only come from his musical side — the songs have an emotional bent and express the different aspects of his perspectives towards his relationship with family and the culture. Hermon Mehari’s 2020 sophomore album as a leader\, “A Change For the Dreamlike” (MiRR)\, takes on a more personal tone. Written and recorded in a barn in the French countryside during le confinement\, it shows only hints at the aesthetic set by his previous debut album. Although he already had a growing reputation\, the success of Mehari’s debut album \,”Bleu”\, put him concretely on the musical map in 2017. “Bleu” includes ECM recording artist Aaron Parks on piano\, Blue Note recording artist Logan Richardson on alto saxophone\, Peter Schlamb on vibraphone\, Ryan J. Lee on drums and Rick Rosato on bass. \nMehari was the winner of the 2015 Carmine Caruso International Trumpet Competition and a semifinalist in the 2014 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition. In 2014 he released the CD “Our Journey” with Diverse\, his second with the group. Mehari maintains a touring schedule around the world with his own group and as a sideman. Mehari was also the winner of the 2008 National Trumpet Competition and placed 2nd in the International Trumpet Guild competition in Sydney\, Australia. As a founding member of Diverse\, whose eponymous debut album on Seattle-based Origin Records reached the Top 40 on the Jazzweek Radio Charts\, he has performed professionally with noted saxophonists Jaleel Shaw\, Logan Richardson\, Bobby Watson\, Ben Van Gelder\, and Tivon Pennicott. He has also performed with Aaron Parks\, Joe Sanders\, Hubert Laws\, Randy Brecker\, Tony Tixier\, Dave Pietro\, Clay Jenkins and many other great musicians. \nHermon Mehari received his BM in Jazz Performance from the University of Missouri – Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance in 2010. In addition to performing\, he dedicates himself to being a serious educator\, runs a weekly musical radio program called “The Session” on the NPR-affiliated station KCUR 89.3\, is an artistic director of the Collectif MiRR and has participated in arts related clinics and panels around the world. \nPeter Schlamb is a vibraphonist and pianist based in Kansas City\, MO. He recently released second album “Electric Tinks” and maintains a busy schedule performing locally\, nationally and internationally. Peter spent several years in New York where he attended and graduated from New School University. During his time in New York\, he recorded and performed with artists including Logan Richardson\, David Binney\, Mike Moreno\, and Ben van Gelder. Peter currently leads the group Electric Tinks and is a member of Logan Richardson’s Blues People as well as frequently performing with several other ensembles around the world.
