SUMMARY:Lawrence Matthews Live at The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Lawrence Matthews Live at The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, October 25\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $10 in advance | $10 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nBorn and raised in a suburb of Memphis; the story of Lawrence Matthews is the journey of an artist trying to move forward toward a healthy and free self\, all while reckoning with the extreme environmental stimulus of southern poverty and violence. Though often imagined as opposing forces\, the horror and beauty of the south often live in the same space. Matthews navigates this in-between space as an extension of the southern gothic voices with whom he is aligned. He emerges as somewhat of a Morrisonian beloved ghost\, a child who needed more. Now\, fully grown as a manifestation of love and bitterness intertwined. \nWith a BFA from The University of Memphis and a decade long career working with various arts nonprofits\, his work in nearly every area of the arts is an amalgamation of his whole life. As a young artist he’d create with the rap\, R&B and alternative rock references he’d come in contact with. Visually inspired by the regionalistic mythology of Paul Thomas Anderson and early Spike Lee; Matthews’ own visuals weave African spirituality with the Christian mythology that permeates the region\, highlighting the deep relationship between the often maligned spiritual connections Black people have explored for generations. Introduced to new sounds by way of underground mixtapes and 2000s video countdowns\, these sonics blended with the eccentricities of acts like Outkast and grittier more reality-driven music from the south creating a diverse palate that Matthews pulls from when crafting the imagery that populates his own art. \nShedding his previous Don Lifted alias\, Matthews re-introduces himself as just that – himself. Matthews decided it was time to harness his truest form as a creative. Exploring those complex feelings of longing\, grief\, emptiness\, and separation actually led Matthews to a deeper and more honest relationship with his community and himself. The unbelievable became inextricably linked to what is real. He ventured into the unexplored corners of himself\, places and stories forgotten or suppressed behind traumatic environments and a survivalist mentality. Now a reborn artist\, Matthews is intentional about aligning himself with others. That intention is a thread in his new musical journey\, as he aligns his stories with the stories of those who came before him and walks alongside their traditions.

Johnson! A heartfelt tribute to one of Finzer’s musical heroes. J.J. Johnson\, a trailblazer on the trombone\, revolutionized the instrument much like Charlie Parker did for the saxophone. His ability to seamlessly translate the clarity\, precision\, and velocity of bebop onto the trombone\, while maintaining a distinctive sound\, is unparalleled. Beyond his virtuosity\, J.J. was a prolific composer\, creating numerous tunes and arrangements for albums\, and later expanding his repertoire to include compositions for movie scores and large brass orchestras.\n\n\nThis project aspires to build upon the legacy of this trombone giant by delving into his compositions. Drawing inspiration from J.J.’s vast catalog\, we explore new musical territories while paying homage to the jazz classics associated with his name. This concert promises to be an unforgettable celebration of J.J. Johnson’s enduring influence on the world of jazz!

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Folk All Y’all: Kyshona
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts and Folk All Y’all present Kyshona in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, October 12\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20  \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nThis event is postponed until further notice. \nKyshona lends her voice and music to those who feel silenced\, forgotten or alone. She began her career as a music therapist\, writing her first songs with patients — students and inmates under her care. She became compelled to write independently and find her own voice\, an endeavor which led her to the Nashville creative community and songwriting culture. Since then\, she balances her music career with her passion to heal in community through her organization Your Song. \nKyshona’s new project LEGACY focuses on family. Through stories\, photos\, film\, ancestry and genealogy research\, and travels in the power of place\, Kyshona shares her story while inviting listeners and concert goers to join her in exploration of self\, healing and growth. The tour will kick off in early 2024 with various types of experiences including concerts\, speaking event\, workshops\, and virtual meetings. The album will release in April 2024\, with singles coming soon. Sign up for eNews to stay informed of what’s to come! \nOver the last few years\, in addition to three new original singles and multiple music videos\, she released a collection of recordings and videos in collaboration with Centennial Park Conservancy – recorded at Nashville’s Parthenon\, in front of a monumental sized gold statue of Athena. A song she wrote with ZG Smith called “Nighttime Animal” was named to American Songwriter’s Top 25 Songs of 2022 and enjoyed spins on AAA radio. She wrote an article for No Depression magazine\, and was invited to speak at several events including giving a keynote address for 2023 Fulbright Scholars. She is featured in a 2023 PBS television show called “Ear to the Common Ground\,” gathering fans around a dining table to discuss voting rights in America\, and she will be featured in an upcoming video series featuring Americana artists performing in the prestigious Schermerhorn Symphony Center Theater in Nashville. \nHer song Listen was an anthem for many in 2020. Of her album of the same name\, one fan reviewer wrote: “Amidst these hard\, divisive times this set of songs is a salve for the grief many of us are feeling about resulting loss of family\, friends\, and community.” Within the grooves of its 10 tracks\, Kyshona blends roots\, rock\, R&B\, and folk with lyrical prowess to uplift the marginalized and bring awareness to the masses. It’s for every silent scream\, every heavy load\, fearful thought\, and a simmering sense of anger that the repressed\, the lost\, and the forgotten try to hide from the world. \nAudiences will find a common thread of empowerment\, overcoming adversity\, and finding hope in her work. The show doesn’t end when the last song is sung. After her powerful performances\, concertgoers often ask\, “What can I do?” \nHer response? “Listen.”

SUMMARY:Brennen Leigh Trio
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Art presents the Brennen Leigh Trio in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSunday\, September 29\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\n\n\n\nBrennen Leigh is an American songwriter\, guitar player\, mandolin player\, and singer whose to-the-point storytelling style has elevated her to cult icon status in Europe\, Scandinavia\, across the United States\, South America\, and the United Kingdom.\n\n\n\nHer songs have been recorded by Lee Ann Womack\, Rodney Crowell\, Sunny Sweeney\, Charley Crockett\, and many others. As renowned for her musicianship as for her writing\, it’s easy to see how Leigh caught the ear of greats like Guy Clark\, who colorfully endorsed her flatpicking: “Brennen Leigh plays guitar like a motherfucker\,” and David Olney\, who described her writing as “tender\, violent\, sentimental\, foolish and wise\, she is always Brennen. Confident and at ease with herself\, without being a jerk about it.”

SUMMARY:Dan & Peggy Reeder with Greg Cartwright Krista Wroten
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents a special performance from indie-folk legend Dan Reeder and his daughter Peggy with an opening performance from Memphis-based musos Greg Cartwright and Krista Wroten in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nTuesday\, September 24\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $25 in advance | $30 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\nDan Reeder\, Oh Boy Records’ longest signed artist besides John Prine\, is a self-sufficient artist in every aspect of his work. The cover of each one of his albums bears artwork he created himself. He’s built a majority of the instruments you hear. From guitar pickups to microphones\, preamps and mixers. He’s built steel string guitars\, electric guitars\, banjos\, drums\, basses\, cellos\, violins\, clarinets\, and even a saxophone (note from Dan: “I’ll never do that again”). \n\n\n\nThe bluntness of Reeder’s lyrics are softened by his crooning; yet\, even with multi-layered harmonies\, his voice maintains its iconic “wisp”. Reeder’s musical intelligence is as present as ever. You’re hearing every piece of a self-made artist and his multifaceted skill set — from the soulful\, smoky vocal overlay to a singular\, meticulous guitar sound\, but best of all\, you’re hearing the ingenuity that is Dan Reeder.

SUMMARY:TAE & the Neighborly
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents TAE & the Neighborly in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, September 21\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nTae & The Neighborly\, a Wisconsin-based soul-pop\, R&B group\, found themselves playing music together in a very unconventional way. They were all neighbors\, each one living alone on one floor of a five-story flat.\n\n\n\nCake-baking is a shared passion of the five-member group\, but in the sugar shortages early in the 2020 pandemic\, they found themselves so continually knocking on each other’s doors asking for a single cup of sugar that a group decision was made to all move in together and share cake-baking resources. Since everyone knows all good rhythms begin in the kitchen\, it wasn’t before long that the group began to write and perform together across the nation.\n\n\n\nCritics hail the group as “having more kick than a bagged-up mule” (Rotary Times) and their live show “… going down smoother than a can of [beans] warmed on the campfire” (Cowboy Gazette).

SUMMARY:Folk All Y’all: Daniel Champagne
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts and Folk All Y’all present Daniel Champagne in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, September 7\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $30 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nOne reviewer recently wrote – ‘Daniel Champagne exudes a natural ease on stage\, as he sings poignant lyrics and beautifully crafted melodies that invariably whisk the heart up with grand romanticism. Coupled with an exhilarating guitar talent that transcends mere acoustic playing to replicate a whole band\, Champagne is just magical’ (themusic.com.au) \nThe story goes that the young Australian singer\, songwriter and one-of-a-kind guitar virtuoso first picked up his instrument of choice as a five-year-old following in the footsteps of a musical father. He began writing songs at 12\, training classically throughout his teens and performing solo wherever he could\, honing his craft and developing what would become the dynamite live show that he is renowned for today. At 18 he left school\, turned professional and hit the road. \nThe following decade saw him release 5 studio albums\, tour relentlessly around the globe with upwards of 300 shows per year\, play some of the biggest festivals under the sun and share stages with the likes of Tommy Emmanuel\, INXS\, John Butler\, Lucinda Williams\, Ani DiFranco\, Judy Collins and Rodrigo y Gabriela. \nIn early 2020 as the COVID pandemic ground all touring to a halt\, Daniel returned to Australia writing music and further honing his craft and will return to international audiences with a swag of new songs and a complete new live show. For fans of guitar\, songs or just artistic expression at it’s finest this show is a must see!

SUMMARY:Folk All Y’all: Pierce Pettis
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts and Folk All Y’all present Pierce Pettis in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, August 10\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter a lifetime of crafting finely-wrought\, heart-touching songs\, singer-songwriter Pierce Pettis (he/him) feels that he’s finally found his comfort zone. “The biggest change\,” he says of this point in his career “has been getting over myself and realizing this is a job and a craft. And the purpose is not fame and fortune (whatever that is) but simply doing good work.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n“From the time I was very little\, I always had the music going in my head\,” Pettis explains. “In school\, I met other kids who wanted to be rock stars\, just like me.  From the time we were around 10 or so up through high school\, we put together various bands — all of them horrible.” \nHis “horrible” bands didn’t deter him though and even though he had a nagging feeling  (“I thought I was supposed to be a doctor or something.”) he persevered\, not only playing music but writing songs in a mix of rock\, folk\, country and R&B genres that landed him an unpaid position as a staff writer for Muscle Shoals Sounds Studios. While there\, his track “Song at the End of the Movie” found its way to Joan Baez’s 1979 album Honest Lullaby. \nPettis hit the road and became a member of the “Fast Folk” movement in New York in the mid-1980s and was a staff songwriter for PolyGram from 1993-2000.  Pierce Pettis’ songs have been recorded by artists including Susan Ashton\, Dar Williams\, Garth Brooks and Art Garfunkel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Green Room: Operated by Crosstown Arts\, The Green Room is committed to providing the best possible environment for the two most important components of a musical performance: the artists work and the audiences listening experience. \nAbout Folk All Y’all: Intimate\, attentive performances by exceptional singer-songwriters\, proudly presented in Memphis\, Folk All Y’all is a public\, nonprofit listening room series supported by our pledges from our community. \nEntry requirements may change but your purchase indicates acceptance of any necessary health policy.

SUMMARY:Modern Masters Jazz Series: Roland Barber and The Ted Ludwig Trio
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Modern Masters Jazz Series: Roland Barber and The Ted Ludwig Trio in The Green Room. \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nWednesday\, August 7\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 at the door | $10 student tickets \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nNative of Nashville\, TN\, known around the world as “Music City\,” trombonist Roland Barber enjoys a career full of diverse and exciting musical pursuits at the highest level. Roland has achieved a powerful\, soulful and spiritual artistry as a jazz performer\, so much so that Curtis Fuller (John Coltrane’s only trombonist) exclaimed upon hearing him\, “Now THAT’s what jazz trombone is all about!”  Roland’s style is a synthesis of jazz’s finest elements – sporting a keen\, fluent command of the bebop language\, tempered with a compelling sense of melodic “voice” that’s rooted in the swagger and soul of the blues and swing traditions. Roland employs a warm\, personal tone that is lyrical and full\, yet ready to burn with heat and intensity when the moment presents itself.  Roland is also known for his masterful plunger-mute playing – a gem in the music of jazz that goes back to Tricky Sam Nanton of Ellington’s orchestra and a study has been passed down the generations\, most directly to Roland through mentors Steve Turre and Al Grey. \nBarber has performed with titans of jazz music as well as young lions\, including Stefon Harris\, Sean Jones\, Clark Terry\, Branford Marsalis\, Houston Person\, Jeff “Tain” Watts\, Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center\, the Duke Ellington Orchestra\, the Chico O’Farill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra\, Lainie Cooke and the Grammy-winning New Orleans Jazz Ensemble. Barber has performed in venues the world over\, from Manhattan to Estonia\, including Carnegie Hall\, Birdland\, the Blue Note\, Lincoln Center\, the Kennedy Center\, and Madison Square Garden. Television appearances include MTV’s Making the Band\, NBC’s Saturday Night Live\, CBS’ Today Show and the ESPN Awards. Beyond the jazz realm\, Roland has performed with a stylistically broad “who’s who” of the music scene\, including the Wooten Brothers\, Slavic Soul Party\, Lauryn Hill\, the Nashville Symphony\, Lady A\, Melinda Doolittle\, Chaka Khan\, Aretha Franklin\, Lauren Daigle\, Taj Mahal\, Keb’ Mo\, the Wood Brothers\, Cissy Houston\, La India\, Roberto Blades\, Take 6\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo\, Kirk Whalum\, the NBC Saturday Night Live Band and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra. \nAlongside being a compelling performer\, Barber is also a celebrated composer and arranger\, and was awarded a New Works Jazz Grant from Chamber Music America\, which led to the writing and premier of his first extended suite\, Songs of the Village\, written for quintet. This suite saw its world premiere at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club in 2010. \nHaving relocated back to Nashville\, TN after a seven year tenure in NYC\, Roland is now a mainstay in the Nashville studio scene\, having recorded in almost every genre imaginable. Roland’s  combination of experience and talent that puts him at the top of the city’s list when brass performance is needed.  Despite the global difficulties of 2020\, Roland celebrated the first year of recording on EVERY brass instrument (from trumpet to tuba) in the studio\, and is trailblazing a path as a one-man\, multi-instrumentalist brass machine. \nRoland also is quite active in education circles\, having taught for Manhattan School of Music\, the Nashville Symphony\, Vanderbilt University\, Nashville Notes and the Nashville Jazz Workshop.  Roland has given masterclasses around the country at venues including Vanderbilt University\, University of North Carolina\, University of Michigan\, Middle TN State University\, Tennessee State University\, and others.  An educational highlight\, Roland gave a masterclass/clinic for the 2021 JEN Clinic entitled\, “The Voice of the Plunger\,” where he detailed the history and development of the language of the storied mute’s history in jazz.  Beginning with the inception of the mute in Ellington’s early bands\, Roland traced the development of plunger artistry through to the modern master practitioners that helped shape his own approach\, most notably Clark Terry\, Al Grey and Steve Turre. Roland can be found now leading his own bands throughout the region\, be it his small group jazz quartet/quintet\, his NOLA-inspired Righteous Few Brass Band\, or his Salsa-In-English band\, Souvenir. \nBarber holds an M.M. in Jazz Studies from Manhattan School of Music (2005)\, as well as an Artist Diploma (2003) and B.M. in Jazz Studies (2001)\, both from Indiana University.
