While the Kentucky-raised\, New Orleans-schooled\, New York-honed\, and currently Nashville-based Cowherd is best known for his long-running partnership with drummer/bandleader Brian Blade (with whom he co-founded the Grammy nominated Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band)\, he is equally at ease in the roles of musical director\, side man\, or studio wizard. Cowherd’s stellar keyboard work and singular compositional skills are driven\, simply\, by a lifelong drive to “just be a great musician.” \nIn 2013\, ArtistShare and Blue Note records released “Mercy”\, Cowherd’s first album as a leader. The record features Bill Frisell\, John Patitucci and Brian Blade. Cowherd and Blade also directed the all-star Joni Mitchell tribute “Joni 75” along with such artists as Brandi Carlile\, Glen Hansard\, Emmylou Harris\, Norah Jones\, Chaka Khan\, Diana Krall\, Kris Kristofferson\, Los Lobos with Marisoul\, Graham Nash\, Seal\, James Taylor and Rufus Wainwright. In 2017 Cowherd released “Gateway” on the exclusive “vinyl only” Newvelle record label. “Gateway” consists of seven compositions by Cowherd and one from Brian Blade\, and features Steve Cardenas and Tony Scherr. As an arranger\, Cowherd has scored for big band\, strings and symphony orchestra for Brandi Carlile\, Cassandra Wilson\, Lizz Wright\, the Fellowship Band and the Shreveport Symphony and the Loyola University Symphony Orchestra. In 2023 The Jon Cowherd Trio released “Pride & Joy”\, featuring John Patitucci\, Brian Blade\, Chris Potter\, and Alex Acuna.

This event will be for those who are searching for a sacred space to connect with something higher through themselves—similar to a church service but with music connecting with God through sound and grounding. \nThere has been nothing like Sanctuary. \nSanctuary provides a safe place for those who need a place to belong and music is a universal language. It’s meant to be healing and transcending. \n*Floor seating is suggested as it will be similar to a jazz night with your friends. \n\nDJ Brilli known as Lola Nychole is a multi-faceted creative that embodies an open format style. She showcases music in a way that allows her to use her creative direction skills to direct a crowd sonically. Brilli enjoys translating sonic feelings with her controller to influence the crowd to dance\, let loose and feel confident through smooth transitions and her carefully curated style. \nLola is a well rounded creative and visual artist who also takes pride in using her artistic abilities to heal her community. In 2025\, she hosted “Black Art & Black Medicine” to provide artist the tools to align their creative process with a spiritual process. As a year two public tour docent at Brooks Museum\, she values art in all forms and strives to grow her knowledge through fashion design\, sonic healing\, and creative direction. \nLana J. is a Memphis native\, coming from a city known for its soulful music and vibrant culture. At just 13 years old\, she was accepted into the incomparable Stax Music Academy\, where she honed her skills in songwriting\, live performances\, production\, and recording. Growing up in a church-oriented environment\, Lana J. found her passion for music through singing in her hometown church and participating in the school choir. She later joined an all-female a cappella group called “Key of She\,” which provided her with opportunities to arrange music\, travel\, and perform. \nAfter graduating from Loyola University New Orleans with a degree in Popular and Commercial Music\, Lana J. began making her mark in the music industry. Her first studio recording collaboration was on the upbeat track “Rendezvous” by D-Bibbs ft. Lana J. This was followed by her debut single “Warning\,” which showcased her unique style and artistry. In April 2022\, Lana J. released her debut project titled “Breathe\,” a soothing and soulful reminder to take a moment for self-care a reenforced theme within her journey as an artist and human\, shedding light on mental health awareness and self discovery. \nShe also collaborated with classmate and producer/artsit Soto on the funky and psychedelic track “SexFruit\,” which originated from her time at Loyola University. As Lana J.’s career progressed\, she delved deeper into her thoughts and aspirations in the studio\, exploring vocal production\, songwriting\, and recording techniques. This year marks the beginning of a creative renaissance for Lana J. as she prepares to release her next project\, including the single “Take it Slow” and an EP scheduled for Summer 2024. Exciting collaborations with talented musicians and artists in her community are on the horizon\, further fueling Lana J.’s artistic journey.

Her solo performances are chosen spontaneously\, given the atmosphere of the room and the people present.  \nShe makes use of Pure Data patches developed by the open sources community surrounding the Organelle (the technobear\, shreeswifty\, critterandguitari\, tony j morton\, nobuyasu sakonda\, soxsa\, varicela\, nicky-system\, samesimilar\, and chrisk).  \nThe music during this performance will pull from Caroline’s recent solo album\, Fallows\, created during a time of rest on land in Ucross\, Wyoming. Bell hooks was a constant source of inspiration during this time\, through the following ideas: love as a practice of freedom\, radical openness\, maintenance of commitment\, using community as a means of escape\, belief in one’s capacity to transform\, what it means to listen\, and eliminating elimination. \n\n\n\n\nCaroline Davis is a Brooklyn-based saxophonist\, composer\, and activist\, whose work is driven by a desire for connection and a belief in music’s capacity to expand listeners’ ears\, minds\, and hearts. A 2025 Guggenheim Fellow in Composition\, she is the recipient of the DownBeat Critics Poll Alto Saxophone Rising Star Award\, as well as fellowships from NYFA\, the Jerome Foundation\, Chamber Music America\, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Her residencies include MacDowell\, The Jazz Gallery\, Civitella\, and the Rockefeller Estate\, and she has served as a mentor for New Music USA’s Next Jazz Legacy program. \nDavis’s work spans a wide range of creative contexts\, rooted in improvisation and social inquiry. She has released eight albums as a leader and collaborated with artists such as Allison Miller\, Lee Konitz\, John Zorn\, Angelica Sanchez\, The Femme Jam\, Miles Okazaki\, Nicole Mitchell\, Rajna Swaminathan\, and Matt Mitchell. Her most recent release\, Portals\, explores themes of grief and memory\, and she is also a contributor to Terri Lyne Carrington’s New Standards\, a landmark collection of jazz compositions by female-identifying composers. \nIn addition to her work as a performer and composer\, Davis is a dedicated educator\, teaching courses on gender in jazz at The New School and maintaining a private studio at the Manhattan School of Music. Her artistic practice is deeply intertwined with advocacy\, including work for gender equity through This Is A Movement\, and for current and formerly incarcerated individuals through initiatives such as Justice for Keith LaMar\, Freer Records\, Keys Beats Bars\, and Creative Beyond Incarceration.

She exemplifies the elegance and eloquence of a golden era\, while bridging the new soul movement of her fellow contemporaries\, with a transcending grace rarely found within those artists of today.\nA native of Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, she was born to accomplished musicians Michael and Joyce Oby. Relocated to Memphis\, Michaelyn began singing at an early age gaining the title as “the little girl with the big voice.” She graced the Memphis Jazz scene as house vocalist for The Sax on Sunday Jazz Jam\, where she was featured on WUMR’s 91.7 Jazz Hot Spot. Immediately after\, Michaelyn was singing every week on the historic Beale Street at The King’s Palace Café\, the only jazz dinner club on the strip.\nIn 2019\, Michaelyn relocated to Chicago\, IL\, and is proud to call this great city her new home. For several years she performed while cruising up and down The Mississippi River and its tributaries on the American Queen Steamboat as one of its featured/Guest Entertainers. She is especially excited to add her extensive musical repertoire two solo shows “Feeling Good” and “Lady Sings Ms.Ross: A Tribute to Diana Ross” where she pays homage to those influential artists and genres she has grown to love.\nABOUT DINAH WASHINGTON\n\nDinah Washington was an American singer and pianist\, one of the most popular Black female recording artists of the 1950s. Primarily a jazz vocalist\, she performed and recorded in a wide variety of styles including blues\, R&B\, and traditional pop music\, and gave herself the title of “Queen of the Blues”. She was also known as “Queen of the Jukeboxes”. She was a 1986 inductee of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame\, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

Stafford is recognized as an incredibly gifted and versatile player\, he combines a deep love of melody with his own brand of spirited and adventurous lyricism. She explored her sixth continent\, Antarctica\, with her horn\, Otto\, and a field recorder in hand. Her resulting piece\, Otto in Antarctica\, is an experiential musical journey through the most mysterious region of the world. Join Kyra as she recounts her adventures through the mediums of French horn\, video\, field recordings\, spoken word\, and more. \n\nKYRA SIMS\nKyra Sims is a collaborative French Hornist\, writer\, and interdisciplinary performance artist residing in New York City. She has worked with artists and ensembles such as Rosalía\, Lizzo\, Jon Batiste\, Earth\, Wind & Fire\, The Roots\, Carole King\, Alarm Will Sound\, International Contemporary Ensemble\, Roomful of Teeth\, Frank Ocean\, and My Brightest Diamond. Kyra appeared as a backing musician in Taylor Mac’s Pulitzer finalist work A 24-Decade History of Popular Music\, the critically acclaimed pop opera (and subsequent film adaptation) Now I’m Fine\, and the internationally renowned podcast Welcome to Night Vale. She has also made television appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon\, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert\, and Mozart in the Jungle.\nKyra has worked as a musician both on Broadway and Off\, originating chairs at Tony-Nominated Broadway show Illinoise\, Drama Desk-Nominated shows Carmen Jones\, Superhero\, and Soft Power\, and the Emmy-Nominated online show Ratatouille: A Tik Tok Musical.\nIn January 2026 Kyra traveled to Antarctica as a Polar STEAM fellow\, composing and gathering field recordings alongside microbiologists\, geologists\, and geochemists. Her piece inspired by the voyage premiered in Spring 2026 in Australia\, her seventh continent. This accomplishment makes her the first Black musician to perform on all seven continents.\nRecording credits include Noname’s Sundial\, Zola Jesus’ Taiga\, Disparition’s Faite\, original cast recordings for Illinoise\, Superhero\, and Grammy-nominated Soft Power\, and films such as the well-received documentary Chèche Lavi\, and Here and Now starring Sarah Jessica Parker.\n\nAs a theatre maker\, Kyra worked for a decade as an Ensemble member of The New York Neo-Futurists\, where she wrote\, directed\, and premiered nearly 200 short theatrical works based on her lived experiences and the world around her. Her work with the company earned her a nomination for a New York Innovative Theatre Award for Outstanding Sound Design. She now works independently as an electronic performance artist\, blending French horn with vocals\, electronics\, and spoken word\, blending slice-of-life themes with hopeful Afrofuturism.

He later studied music with Dr. London Branch\, Alvin Fielder\, and Andy Hardwick at Jackson State University in Jackson\, Mississippi. During his college years\, Jordan joined the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra where he served as Assistant Principal Bassist. After graduating\, he became Chair of the String Department at the Dougherty County Public School and served as Principal Bassist with the Albany Symphony Orchestra in Albany\, GA. Teaching has always been an important part of Mr. Jordan’s life and career. In addition to teaching strings in Dougherty County\, he also taught in the DeKalb County School Systems.\nDuring his years in Georgia\, Jordan served as a bass instructor at Darton College (part of the University System of Georgia) in Albany and at Georgia State University in Atlanta. While living in Atlanta\, Jordan became one of the city’s most active jazz bassists\, performing and recording with some of America’s finest jazz musicians\, including Marcus Printup\, Mulgrew Miller\, James Williams\, Milt Jackson\, George Coleman\, and Russell Gunn. He joined the faculty in the School of Music at Florida State University in Tallahassee\, FL in 2001 where he now holds a rank of Associate Professor of Jazz Studies. Jordan teaches jazz bass\, jazz combo playing\, music education classes\, and a jazz styles class.\n\nJordan joined the Marcus Roberts Trio in 2009. It was evident during that first official performance of the newly-formed trio at the prestigious Wigmore Hall in London that Jordan thoroughly understood Roberts’ unique trio conception. Rodney Jordan is one of the most versatile jazz bassists on the scene today. His tone is rich and soulful when he plays hauntingly beautiful phrases with the bow. Just as readily\, he plays fast virtuosic passages with apparent effortless skill. Jordan’s knowledge of harmony from his classical bass training combined with the relentless feeling of swing in his playing is a perfect fit for the powerful melodic\, blues-based\, syncopated improvisational sound of the Marcus Roberts Trio.

This group was formed in 2015 and has released an album June 1\, 2016 titled “Jeremy Warren-I Can Do All Things” that has received “Most Highly Recommended” from critics such as Jazz Times\, Improvijazzation Nation\, All About Jazz\, AXS\, and many others. The Rudiment has performed in some of the top venues in the NYC area such as the Blue Note NYC\, Minton’s Harlem\, Club Bonafide\, Cornelia St Café\, and many more. The Rudiment performed at the 2016 Jazz at The Buckman Center in Memphis\, TN; 2017 Katy Jazz Festival in Katy\, TX (where they also put on masterclasses for high school/college students and held workshops for high school jazz bands); Jazz in the Park in Patterson\, NJ for 3 years running; plus many more. They performed at the Made in New York Gala along side jazz greats Randy Brecker\, Fransico Mela\, and John Patituci. Drummer\, Jeremy Warren\, composes and arranges for the group while vocalist\, Dermel Warren\, handles the lyrical composition. J&D bring their deep Soul & Gospel roots mixed with NYC’s Hip-Hop & Jazz influences to create their own unique style.\nABOUT BETTY CARTER\nBetty Carter developed a legendary reputation\, along with Art Blakey\, as one of the great mentors for young jazz musicians. Equally legendary was her singing prowess\, creating a distinctive style of improvisation that could transcend any song.\nCarter’s bands served a dual purpose: to create her own great music and to help young musicians develop their craft. Many of the musicians who passed through her groups went on to lead their own groups\, such as Geri Allen\, Stephen Scott\, Don Braden\, and Christian McBride. She also developed a mentoring program called Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead through links with organizations like the International Association for Jazz Education\, 651 Arts\, and the Kennedy Center. The program was a one- to two-week teaching seminar where nationally selected promising young jazz musicians learned from Carter and other seasoned musicians\, culminating in a final concert of instructors and students together. Jazz Ahead was one of Carter’s proudest achievements\, and she worked with the program up until her death. She received the National Medal of Arts in 1997.\nABOUT ELVIN JONES\n\nElvin Jones was an American jazz drummer of the post-bop era. Most famously a member of John Coltrane’s quartet\, with whom he recorded from late 1960 to late 1965\, Jones appeared on such albums as My Favorite Things\, A Love Supreme\, Ascension and Live at Birdland. After 1966\, Jones led his own trio\, and later larger groups under the name The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine. His brothers Hank and Thad were also celebrated jazz musicians with whom he occasionally recorded. Elvin was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1995. In his The History of Jazz\, jazz historian and critic Ted Gioia calls Jones “one of the most influential drummers in the history of jazz”.

Young up-and-coming musicians and local jazz veterans alike join together for spontaneous music making\, sharing the stage as they tackle the expansive body of repertoire found within the jazz idiom. The Green Room Jazz Jam strives to provide an inclusive and collaborative environment where jazz musicians of all ages and backgrounds may perform\, network\, and interact together in the interest of further fostering Memphis’ diverse music scene. \nAlex Upton is a Memphis-based saxophonist\, composer\, and educator with a deep passion for musics both old and new. Alex is a nationally awarded soloist that has performed and recorded with artists such as Rahsaan Barber\, Rachel Therrien\, Ted Ludwig\, Baron Tymas\, Stephen Anderson\, and James Sexton. Awarded first prize in the 2022 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Artist Competition\, Alex has performed at both JEN and NASA Conferences\, and has performed at regionally renowned venues including the Brooks Museum of Art\, Crosstown Arts Green Room\, Durham’s Sharp Nine Gallery\, and Bond Brothers Eastside. Their work as a performer and composer is featured on Summit Records with the 360 Jazz Initiative\, and under their own name on their newest full-length album release “Portraits of a Silent Moment”.

Joining them for a micro set will be Me & Leah backed by the Hand Me Downs. Other special guests to be announced and don’t be surprised if the band plays some Christmas classics. This show is all ages and not to be missed.\ \n\nJEFF HULETT\nFrom the outside\, Jeff Hulett might seem like a late-blooming guitarist and songwriter. But if you ask any of his fellow musicians they’ll tell you he was writing songs and playing music long before he put pen to paper or strummed a chord.\nHis unique style landed him in the band Snowglobe. Over his many years with this Memphis-based institution\, Hulett regularly contributed melodies\, lyrics and arrangements to many of the tunes in their prolific cannon. You can even hear a few of his originals in their discography.\nDuring his long tenure with Snowglobe\, Hulett continued to hone his own voice and develop his own creative projects. He began playing guitar more\, and writing his own lyrics. This dedication and passion led to his collaboration with Leah Keys in the band Me & Leah. They released an eponymous and beautiful CD in 2016 featuring nine original folk tunes. Then in 2019\, Me & Leah added Jonathan Schallert to the mix to record and partially release a digital copy of their 7 inch Most of Your Life. Both albums were engineered by accomplished mainstays Toby Vest and Pete Mathews of High/Low and Andrew McCalla\, respectively.\nBut it was when the pandemic struck that Hulett really hit his stride as a songwriter. All alone and with nowhere to go\, using an old version of Garageband\, he started creating original tracks and collaborating with more and more musicians\, writers\, and other creators. He was one of the first artists in Memphis–or even the world–to give a voice to our collective feelings when he released his album Safe @ Home w/ Jacob Church early in the pandemic. That record–a seven-song exploration of the new normal we were all just beginning to live–resonated around the globe. It even landed a spot on The English Show\, a weekly podcast out of Basel\, Switzerland.\nThen\, after going on to release two solo albums on Small Batch Records\, Hulett reconnected with old friends Melissa Goodwin Shepherd and Adam Poor. They formed the band Restless Townies. Their first album\, Miles Away\, was released in April 2021\, and the trio has continued to release several EPs.
