She exemplifies the elegance and eloquence of a golden era\, while bridging the new soul movement of her fellow contemporaries\, with a transcending grace rarely found within those artists of today.\nA native of Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, she was born to accomplished musicians Michael and Joyce Oby. Relocated to Memphis\, Michaelyn began singing at an early age gaining the title as “the little girl with the big voice.” She graced the Memphis Jazz scene as house vocalist for The Sax on Sunday Jazz Jam\, where she was featured on WUMR’s 91.7 Jazz Hot Spot. Immediately after\, Michaelyn was singing every week on the historic Beale Street at The King’s Palace Café\, the only jazz dinner club on the strip.\nIn 2019\, Michaelyn relocated to Chicago\, IL\, and is proud to call this great city her new home. For several years she performed while cruising up and down The Mississippi River and its tributaries on the American Queen Steamboat as one of its featured/Guest Entertainers. She is especially excited to add her extensive musical repertoire two solo shows “Feeling Good” and “Lady Sings Ms.Ross: A Tribute to Diana Ross” where she pays homage to those influential artists and genres she has grown to love.\nABOUT DINAH WASHINGTON\n\nDinah Washington was an American singer and pianist\, one of the most popular Black female recording artists of the 1950s. Primarily a jazz vocalist\, she performed and recorded in a wide variety of styles including blues\, R&B\, and traditional pop music\, and gave herself the title of “Queen of the Blues”. She was also known as “Queen of the Jukeboxes”. She was a 1986 inductee of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame\, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

Her solo performances are chosen spontaneously\, given the atmosphere of the room and the people present.  \nShe makes use of Pure Data patches developed by the open sources community surrounding the Organelle (the technobear\, shreeswifty\, critterandguitari\, tony j morton\, nobuyasu sakonda\, soxsa\, varicela\, nicky-system\, samesimilar\, and chrisk).  \nThe music during this performance will pull from Caroline’s recent solo album\, Fallows\, created during a time of rest on land in Ucross\, Wyoming. Bell hooks was a constant source of inspiration during this time\, through the following ideas: love as a practice of freedom\, radical openness\, maintenance of commitment\, using community as a means of escape\, belief in one’s capacity to transform\, what it means to listen\, and eliminating elimination. \n\n\n\n\nCaroline Davis is a Brooklyn-based saxophonist\, composer\, and activist\, whose work is driven by a desire for connection and a belief in music’s capacity to expand listeners’ ears\, minds\, and hearts. A 2025 Guggenheim Fellow in Composition\, she is the recipient of the DownBeat Critics Poll Alto Saxophone Rising Star Award\, as well as fellowships from NYFA\, the Jerome Foundation\, Chamber Music America\, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Her residencies include MacDowell\, The Jazz Gallery\, Civitella\, and the Rockefeller Estate\, and she has served as a mentor for New Music USA’s Next Jazz Legacy program. \nDavis’s work spans a wide range of creative contexts\, rooted in improvisation and social inquiry. She has released eight albums as a leader and collaborated with artists such as Allison Miller\, Lee Konitz\, John Zorn\, Angelica Sanchez\, The Femme Jam\, Miles Okazaki\, Nicole Mitchell\, Rajna Swaminathan\, and Matt Mitchell. Her most recent release\, Portals\, explores themes of grief and memory\, and she is also a contributor to Terri Lyne Carrington’s New Standards\, a landmark collection of jazz compositions by female-identifying composers. \nIn addition to her work as a performer and composer\, Davis is a dedicated educator\, teaching courses on gender in jazz at The New School and maintaining a private studio at the Manhattan School of Music. Her artistic practice is deeply intertwined with advocacy\, including work for gender equity through This Is A Movement\, and for current and formerly incarcerated individuals through initiatives such as Justice for Keith LaMar\, Freer Records\, Keys Beats Bars\, and Creative Beyond Incarceration.

While the Kentucky-raised\, New Orleans-schooled\, New York-honed\, and currently Nashville-based Cowherd is best known for his long-running partnership with drummer/bandleader Brian Blade (with whom he co-founded the Grammy nominated Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band)\, he is equally at ease in the roles of musical director\, side man\, or studio wizard. Cowherd’s stellar keyboard work and singular compositional skills are driven\, simply\, by a lifelong drive to “just be a great musician.” \nIn 2013\, ArtistShare and Blue Note records released “Mercy”\, Cowherd’s first album as a leader. The record features Bill Frisell\, John Patitucci and Brian Blade. Cowherd and Blade also directed the all-star Joni Mitchell tribute “Joni 75” along with such artists as Brandi Carlile\, Glen Hansard\, Emmylou Harris\, Norah Jones\, Chaka Khan\, Diana Krall\, Kris Kristofferson\, Los Lobos with Marisoul\, Graham Nash\, Seal\, James Taylor and Rufus Wainwright. In 2017 Cowherd released “Gateway” on the exclusive “vinyl only” Newvelle record label. “Gateway” consists of seven compositions by Cowherd and one from Brian Blade\, and features Steve Cardenas and Tony Scherr. As an arranger\, Cowherd has scored for big band\, strings and symphony orchestra for Brandi Carlile\, Cassandra Wilson\, Lizz Wright\, the Fellowship Band and the Shreveport Symphony and the Loyola University Symphony Orchestra. Both his parents and his brother played instruments\, so there was always music in his family setting. He started playing the trumpet at age 8\, and switched to the guitar at age 12. He cites the Beatles\, Miles Davis\, and Wes Montgomery as having the biggest impact on him as a musician. He became the youngest ever faculty member at the University of Miami at age 18\, and then the youngest ever faculty at Berklee College of Music at 19. It was also during his time at Berklee that Pat Metheny began a 3 year collaborative stint with vibraphonist Gary Burton. Pat Metheny’s style is a wide ranging and deep one. His influences come from all areas of music including classical guitar\, rock\, and folk music\, and he displays them all in whatever medium he chooses. Pat Metheny was an early adopter of the synthesizer\, using its sound to the benefit of his music and the music as a whole. He has recorded many albums seminal to jazz\, including Bright Size Life\, Kin\, Pat Metheny Group\, The Way Up\, and Beyond the Missouri Sky only to name a few. He has played with the likes of Jaco Pastorius\, Brad Mehldau\, Charlie Haden\, Lyle Mays\, Mark Egan\, Chris Potter\, John Scofield\, Michael Brecker\, Jack Dejohnette\, McCoy Tyner\, Bill Frisell\, and many others.

Some listeners have described Sean’s improvisations as “sound acupuncture” and “a cell-altering shamanic journey.” \nThe concert lasts approximately 90 minutes. There will be traditional concert seating as well as an area to lie down and spread out. The more comfortable you are\, the deeper the experience. \nSEAN MURPHY \nSean Murphy is a multidisciplinary artist with over 30 years of professional experience. He is a musician\, ethnomusicologist\, instrument maker\, sound healer\, teaching artist\, nature lover\, listener\, explorer… Sean holds a degree in music history with an emphasis in Ethnomusicology from the University of Memphis. He was trained to play western classical and jazz tuba; but his fascination with world cultures and music has led him to play and make innumerable instruments. Early in his career\, he began performing as a solo improvisation musician accompanying dance and yoga which eventually led him to the practice of sound healing. Sean and his wife\, Anne J. Froning\, have led workshops in restorative yoga\, sound healing\, & meditative movement with music throughout the United States. As a performing and recording musician\, Sean is equally at home working in classical to hip hop\, world to ambient\, jazz to hard rock\, new age to jazz. He is the leader of the Mighty Souls Brass Band as well as regularly playing as a sideman with many jazz groups while also regularly performing improvised music for dance\, healing\, and yoga. He also has many recording credits to his name as a soloist\, bandleader\, and sideman. He has also been fortunate enough to perform with many world-renowned musicians and bands including Dr. John\, Paul Winter\, Mike Tamburo\, the Meters\, Galactic\, Clyde Stubblefield\, and Rufus Thomas to name a few.

Hosted by Cyrena Wages with special guest appearances. \n\nCyrena Wages fell in love with music on the country backroads between Millington and Shelby Forest\, two small towns just north of Memphis. Her father\, the hometown judge\, drove her to school every day in a 1967 gold Cadillac with the license plate “ROBN HD” on the back\, an homage to the underdog ideology\, and a conceptual through line of her debut 2024 album\, Vanity Project. Wages tapped producer Matt Ross-Spang (Margo Price\, St. Paul & the Broken Bones) to helm Vanity Project\, a heavy hearted country soul meets indie pop confessional\, at his Southern Grooves Studio in Memphis. Upon it’s release\, Cyrena toured in support of artists like Lilly Winwood\, Hailey Whitters\, Maggie Rose\, Lucero\, and Chaparelle\, and debuted in spaces like the Troubadour\, The Bluebird Cafe\, SXSW\, and Americana Fest. \n\n\nBorn and raised in Natchitoches\, Louisiana\, Caleb Elliott is far from your typical preacher’s son-turned-musician. With his father a pastor and his mother the church pianist\, Elliott was immersed in traditional hymns from an early age\, but it was his love for classical cello that would eventually jumpstart his musical career. As a session musician\, Elliott began lending cello to all kinds of albums in the Lafayette music scene\, culminating in a moment that would change his trajectory and finally move him out of Louisiana. In 2014\, singer-songwriter Dylan LeBlanc met Elliott and encouraged him to relocate to Muscle Shoals\, Alabama\, where he still resides today. Once settled in the Shoals\, Elliott became the go-to cellist for an elite collective of collaborators such as Nicole Atkins\, John Paul White\, members of Alabama Shakes\, Maggie Rose\, and Cedric Burnside\, whose 2021 record I Be Trying won a Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album. \nAs a singer-songwriter\, Elliott released his debut record Forever to Fade in 2019\, followed by Weed\, Wine & Time in 2023 (both via Single Lock Records). He has opened for a variety of artists such as Alabama Shakes\, Gaz Coombes (Supergrass)\, Sean McConnell\, Penny and Sparrow\, The White Buffalo\, Fruition\, and The Secret Sisters (who are featured on his recent single). In 2025\, he followed up Weed\, Wine & Time with two new singles\, “I Don’t Believe You” and “Slow Burn\,” in which sonic influences like Harry Nilsson and Louisiana’s own Bobby Charles can be heard woven throughout Elliott’s melodies and arrangements. This year\, Elliott continues releasing singles with his new song\, “Dead Ringer\,” featuring Andy Baxter of Penny and Sparrow.

This practice is easy enough for beginners and a great add-on for those who have yoga\, meditation\, bodywork\, and healing practices. Elements of sound healing will also be included to relax the nervous system on a cellular level. The workshop begins with a brief check-in\, a movement practice\, then breathwork while lying on the back. Please bring a blanket\, a yoga mat\, and an eye covering (a hand towel works well). \n\n\n\nRobin Bruce teaches healing breathwork and meditation as an extension of her multidisciplinary arts practice. Her foray into the healing arts began as a yoga teacher and bloomed into the healing arts after studying healing breathwork with David Elliott in 2016. Since then\, she’s become a 200hr ERYT\, with over a thousand hours of yoga teaching experience and a mantra recording artist under the name Dharampal. She’s also earned an MA in religious studies with a focus on ritual and spiritual practices to fortify political movements. She completed her MFA in creative writing and translation at the University of Arkansas in 2025 and currently lives in Fayetteville where she works as a bookseller. She views healing work as personal and communal and breathwork as a vehicle to grieve together and collectively dream new futures.

Young up-and-coming musicians and local jazz veterans alike join together for spontaneous music making\, sharing the stage as they tackle the expansive body of repertoire found within the jazz idiom. The Green Room Jazz Jam strives to provide an inclusive and collaborative environment where jazz musicians of all ages and backgrounds may perform\, network\, and interact together in the interest of further fostering Memphis’ diverse music scene. \nAlex Upton is a Memphis-based saxophonist\, composer\, and educator with a deep passion for musics both old and new. Alex is a nationally awarded soloist that has performed and recorded with artists such as Rahsaan Barber\, Rachel Therrien\, Ted Ludwig\, Baron Tymas\, Stephen Anderson\, and James Sexton. Awarded first prize in the 2022 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Artist Competition\, Alex has performed at both JEN and NASA Conferences\, and has performed at regionally renowned venues including the Brooks Museum of Art\, Crosstown Arts Green Room\, Durham’s Sharp Nine Gallery\, and Bond Brothers Eastside. Their work as a performer and composer is featured on Summit Records with the 360 Jazz Initiative\, and under their own name on their newest full-length album release “Portraits of a Silent Moment”.
