SUMMARY:Strictly Jazz: The Music of Chet Baker
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presentsStrictly Jazz: The Music of Chet Baker in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSunday\, April 13\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $20 in advance (plus fees) | $25 at the door | $10 students with ID\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\nThe Strictly Jazz Series\, a joint presentation by Crosstown Arts and Strictly Jazz Entertainment\, celebrates classic jazz music through contemporary interpretations by acclaimed musicians.\nTrumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker is one of the most well-known and revered of all jazz musicians. His smooth sound and interpretation of jazz and popular standards made him a true original in the art form. Join the Jeremy Shrader Quartet as we celebrate the music and the musician\, performing many hits from Chet Baker’s recorded catalog of American music. The concert also features long-time collaborators and Memphis jazz legends Jim Spake\, Alvie Givhan\, Bob Buckley\, and Earl Lowe.\nTo say that Jeremy Shrader loves good music would be an understatement. His passion shines through in the notes he plays on trumpet\, his singing of classic songs\, and the many bands he leads\, including the New Memphis Hepcats\, the Hot Memphis Five\, and the Jeremy Shrader Octet. Throughout his musical career in Memphis\, he has remained busy\, performing in countless settings\, with jazz as his main love.\nBorn in Clarksville\, Tennessee\, Jeremy was exposed to Southern gospel music early on. His parents were musicians—his father a drummer—and they sang standards like Chattanooga Choo Choo and Sentimental Journey around the house. He started piano at nine or ten\, learned guitar along the way\, and picked up trumpet in middle school to join the band. In high school\, he became immersed in swing and big band music\, playing in the jazz band and exploring other jazz styles.\nAt the University of Memphis\, he earned a degree in Jazz Composition while playing in multiple ensembles. As a sophomore\, he founded the New Memphis Hepcats\, which continues to thrive today. Jeremy also freelances across genres\, co-founded Electric Room Records\, and teaches privately—continuing to shape Memphis’s jazz scene with his passion and talent.

SUMMARY:Clark Sommer's Feast Ephemera
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Clark Sommer’s Feast Ephemera in The Green Room \nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nSaturday\, April 19\, 2025\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $25 (plus fees) | $30 at the door\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n\n\n\n\nIn the 15 years since signing on to Kurt Elling’s working band\, Grammy-Award Winning bassist Clark Sommers has emerged among Chicago’s indispensable bassists. He has filled his resume\, on stage and on disc\, in bands that range from the rambunctious 13-piece Chicago Yestet to the intimate settings of piano trios and vocalist-led quartets. His own projects include his open-sky trio Ba(SH) and the quintet Clark Sommers Lens. He’s collaborated with guitarists Jeff Parker and Matt Gold\, pianist Darrell Grant\, keyboard whiz Gary Versace\, and vibraphonist Joe Locke. His albums brim with his smart and tuneful compositions.\n\nBut by 2019\, he felt restricted in his musical development. “I wanted to get deeper into writing\,” he says now. ‘I wanted to see what I could do if I had the capacity to add more texture to a group – to go further into the exploration of harmonic possibilities\, and to try spreading out the sounds using different instruments.”\nIt is a *rare* opportunity to take in the beauty that is Clark Sommers’ large ensemble music and even rarer yet to feature a who’s-who of Memphis musicians in collaboration with some of Chicago’s most prolific talent.\n\nJoin Clark and his ensemble for ONE-night only in the Green Room at Crosstown Arts on Saturday\, April 19th at 7:30pm.
