SUMMARY:She’Chinah and Friends
DESCRIPTION:The Green Room at Crosstown Arts \nSaturday\, October 1\, 2022 \nDoors open at 7PM | Show begins at 7:30PM \nTickets: $15 in advance | $20 day of the show \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nMemphis native She’Chinah’s love for music has roots deeper than she can remember. As a child\, she sang with her church choir\, and music has continued to soothe her throughout her life. “I have no idea how\,” she says\, “but when I sing the frustration I get with being misunderstood and unheard completely goes away and I am soothed. Music loved me first really\, so I fell for it back.” \nWhen she was young\, she was forbidden to listen to even the faintest\, briefest note of secular music\, and she didn’t find her own voice until years later. As a senior in high school\, She’Chinah began writing songs\, and in college at the University of Memphis\, she recorded features for other musicians. \nInspired by her entrepreneurial parents\, She’Chinah decided to take her God-given talent and step into the spotlight. Originating from a musically inclined family\, her voice has finally found its place. She’Chinah uses her music to face reality\, and the free-spirited singer prides herself on making authentic and relatable music. Her debut EP\, Solitaire\, was released in 2017. Now\, after moving to LA and experiencing some life\, She’Chinah is preparing to share her sophomore EP this fall.

SUMMARY:Amina Figarova Sextet
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents the Amina Figarova Sextet in the Green Room. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, October 7\, 2022\nDoors at 7pm | Show at 7:30pm \nTickets: $20 advance | $25 day of the show ($10 student tickets available)\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \n“…Many of the strongest composer-arranger-orchestra leaders in jazz are women. Think Toshiko Akiyoshi\, Carla Bley\, Maria Schneider. Amina Figarova has a chance to join their company. All she needs is an orchestra. Figarova’s compositions for small ensemble have been brilliant since at least 2005\, when she released September Suite\, still the deepest\, most powerful jazz response to the events of 9/11…” by Thomas Conrad for Stereophile Magazine \nAmina Figarova is a quite phenomenal Azerbaijan-born\, New York-based pianist and stunning composer. Her sextet is fast developing a huge reputation on the international scene. Amina has toured extensively\, developing a tight-knit ensemble that\, despite inevitable personnel changes\, has attained a distinctive and inimitable voice by concentrating on all-original repertoire for almost 18 years. During that period\, having collaborated with musicians residing in both the U.S. and Europe and having built up a circuit of welcoming venues\, the Amina Figarova Sextet has triumphed at the main stage of the Newport Jazz Festival\, been invited repeatedly to New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival\, won critical and audience acclaim in Chicago\, Detroit\, Paris\, Amsterdam — and of course New York. \nAmina’s pieces strike a perfect tone\, employing genuinely beautiful harmonizations\, to capture fleeting thoughts that accompany those precious moments when the puzzling jostle of daily existence comes into unexpected but deeply satisfying sync. \nThis tour is a CD release tour for the new album JOY. \n\nConcert personnel: \nAmina Figarova on piano \nRyan Sands on drums \nYasushi Nakamura on bass \nWayne Escoffery on sax \nAlonzo Demetrius on trumpet \nJenny Davis on flutes

SUMMARY:Mike Dowling
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents GRAMMY-nominated American roots guitarist Mike Dowling in the Green Room. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Green Room at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, October 21\, 2022\nDoors open at 7pm | Show begins at 7:30pm \nTickets: $15 advance | $20 day of the show\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nWhen the late\, great Vassar Clements heard Mike Dowling play guitar back in 1975 he did the sensible thing. He hired him. Mike was the guitarist in Vassar’s first touring band and can be heard on his GRAMMY-nominated “Nashville Jam”. Clements called him simply\, “One of the finest guitarists there is\, anywhere.”Echoing that sentiment is an ever-growing chorus of music critics\, guitar students\, and acoustic music fans from throughout the world. \nMike digs deep into the musical bag of American roots guitar\, favoring the melodic Piedmont style of acoustic blues masters like Mississippi John Hurt and slide great Tampa Red. But Mike can’t be pigeonholed as a blues player\, or even as a fingerstylist. He’s far too versatile for that. From bottleneck blues to vintage jazz and much more in between\, Mike’s musicality\, depth\, and mastery of the instrument translates fluently to flattop\, archtop\, and resonator guitars alike. \nMike grew up in central Wisconsin and early in his career in the midwest caught the ear of jazz violin great Joe Venuti and mandolinist Jethro Burns. In the 1970’s\, in addition to touring with Clements\, he worked and recorded with Burns and Venuti in Chicago and in between jobs took time off to move to California when he had the opportunity to study with the late\, great George Barnes. Barnes had been “the” session guy for many years\, recording with everyone from Big Bill Broonzy to Tony Bennett. “I was very fortunate to be able to spend some time with him”\, Mike says. ” He was so tasteful\, so rhythmic. He set the bar very high for me and he continues to be an inspiration.”
