SUMMARY:Virtual Resident Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts resident artists Sepideh Dashti\, Joann Self Selvidge\, and Sarah Elizabeth Cornejo will present artist talks in a virtual event. \nFree and open to the public \nRegister here \n\nArtist Bios \nSepideh Tajalizadeh Dashti\nSepideh Tajalizadeh Dashti is an emerging interdisciplinary artist. Her recent practice is related to exploring her body by creating performance\, video\, photography\, and installations. Through multiple discourses and contexts\, she is always rediscovering\, reinventing\, and reinterpreting her Iranian identity as a pivotal point for exploring her work in multiple and heterogeneous contexts. \nJoann Self Selvidge\nJoann Self Selvidge is an award-winning filmmaker whose documentaries explore issues of work\, creativity\, agency\, and justice. Since 2002\, she has produced\, directed\, and edited more than two dozen projects\, including features (Juvenile\, See the Keepers\, The Art Academy\, The WLOK Story)\, shorts (Robert\, Viola\, Voices of Jericho\, Nude Photos!)\, series (The Juvenile Project\, The Arts Interviews)\, and multimedia installations (Inaugurate the Resistance). \nSarah Elizabeth Cornejo\nSarah Elizabeth Cornejo’s sculptural work utilizes the possibilities within hybridity to speak of a hypothetical place where humans have evolved into hybrid beings with animals\, insects\, and discarded human-made materials. The resulting physical evolution of this voluntary merging challenges social discomfort around bodies that are not easily categorized by blurring the boundaries between animal and human\, living and dead\, animate and inanimate. Her work aims to disrupt notions of human hierarchy\, testing the phenomenon between humanity\, mammality and technology in a chimeric future.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Pecha Kucha: Crosstown Arts Resident Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts resident artists Brian Pera\, Lawrence Matthews\, Clare Johnson\, Khari Wynn\, Tadasuke Jinno\, and Johnathan Payne will discuss their work in a Pecha Kucha-style artist talk. \nThe Crosstown Arts residency program offers multidisciplinary residencies to visiting and Memphis-based artists and curators\, working in any creative discipline including visual and performing arts\, music\, film\, and writing in all genres. \nThe key to Pecha Kucha is the 20×20 format: all presenters show 20 slides for 20 seconds each\, making each presentation concise and dynamic. If you’re wondering what “Pecha Kucha” means\, it draws its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat.” \nPecha Kucha Nights began in Tokyo as an opportunity for artists\, designers and architects to show samples of their work through a concise\, timed presentation in a relaxed community setting. Over the past 10 years\, these events have expanded to hundreds of cities across the globe\, and often include a variety of community members sharing a wide array of interesting (and sometimes hilarious) topics.

SUMMARY:Isabel Theselius: Baby on Board
DESCRIPTION:Works by Crosstown Arts resident artist Isabel Theselius \nIsabel Theselius is a Swedish artist\, currently based in the U.S.\, whose work takes many forms but continually investigates mortality\, desire\, memory\, and more recently\, superstition. By drawing from her own experiences\, memories\, and family relationships\, Theselius’ work is equally poetic and empathetic\, relatable and enigmatic. \nIn the series\, Baby on Board\, consisting of two- and three-dimensional artworks\, Theselius uses humor and superstition as a tool to process her own fears as a parent. In small\, gouache paintings\, Theselius has given her son supernatural powers\, traveling through various landscapes surrounded by different creatures\, sometimes riding on two cats or floating on a flying carpet. \nIn other paintings\, the text ”baby on board” is repeated over and over\, referring to the signs on the back of cars to signal that other drivers should be extra cautious around their vehicle on the road. Only here\, the text is sometimes barely legible\, made in a psychedelic style\, always with a version of the ”evil eye” lurking in the background. In a kind of twisted logic\, Theselius is imagining that she can prevent her fears of her son getting into an accident from happening in real life if she processes them through her art.

SUMMARY:Andrea Morales: Again As Usual
DESCRIPTION:One-night only exhibition of new work by Crosstown Arts’ summer studio resident artist\, Andrea Morales\, created during her residency session. \n“Change in a community is subtle on a day to day basis\, but is something we experience simultaneously. For better or worse\, that means what is now won’t be so in a few. These images look at Vollentine Evergreen\, Crosstown\, and North Memphis neighborhoods as communities in transition. By cataloguing moments\, both mundane and celebratory\, photographs can inform a portrait in our memories.”\n-Andrea Morales \nAndrea Morales was born in Peru\, raised in Miami\, and currently resides in the Crosstown neighborhood of Memphis. She is an artist\, photojournalist\, freelance photographer\, and teacher.  She works regularly for the New York Times and other well-known publications.

SUMMARY:Andrea Morales: Open Studio & Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:ARTIST TALK AT 2 PM; PORTRAIT SESSIONS TO FOLLOW\n\nThis summer\, Andrea Morales has been photographing Memphis as part of Crosstown Arts’ Studio Residency program. The Peruvian-born and Miami-raised photographer’s ongoing project looks at the details of life in the city’s neighborhoods (particularly in Crosstown and North Memphis) through documentary and portraiture work. Motivated by her background as a photojournalist at community newspapers\, this addresses a communion of sorts with Memphis as a new home. \nThe studio space afforded by the residency is dubbed “Daisy Curtain” Studio for the season and serves as a means to meet folks while developing studio portraiture practices. Come visit Daisy Curtain\, view some work in progress and learn a little about the documentary process. Folks who come by also have the option of having their portrait made\, perhaps as part of the project\, but mostly because there’s no such thing as a bad face. Participants will get a free print and/or digital file for their time. \n\n\n\nThe artist will host 2 additional portrait sessions over the summer: \n\nSunday\, July 24\, 2016; 1PM-5PM\nSunday\, July 31\, 2016; 1PM-5PM \nLooking to schedule some time? Have any other questions?\nContact the artist\, Andrea Morales at morandrea@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Corkey Sinks
DESCRIPTION:Current resident artist Corkey Sinks will give a talk on the work she created during her residency at Crosstown Arts. \nSinks embraces the human tendency to find meaningful patterns within the noise of collective information. Through sculpture\, textiles\, printed matter\, and drawing\, Sinks’ works explore American occultism and self-help culture\, objects manifested through a struggle to understand the systems we occupy. \nCorkey Sinks (b. Dallas\, TX) is an artist based in Memphis\, TN. She received a BA in Media Studies from the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies at the University of Redlands\, CA in 2005 and an MFA in Studio Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012. Sinks has exhibited work throughout the United States and Mexico. In 2015\, her book\, Demon Baby Project: Events\, Coincidences\, and Repercussions was published by No Coast. Upcoming exhibitions include Artificial Tide\, a solo exhibition at The Packing Plant in Nashville\, TN and We gave Our Best\, Now the Rest is Up to the Hope Chest\, a group show at Im Ersten in Vienna\, Austria. \nImage: Corkey Sinks\, Thirteen Is a Cozy Number\, 2016\, Hand-cut\, heat fused plastic\, brass grommets\, 9’x9′
