SUMMARY:Rescheduled: Artist Talks Featuring Lester Merriweather & Alex Paulus
DESCRIPTION:Artist Talks Rescheduled: New Date & Time \nDear Crosstown Arts Community\, \nWith the possibility of inclement weather this weekend\, we’ve decided to reschedule the Artist Talks originally planned for Saturday\, January 11. Keeping the safety and well-being of our community in mind\, the event will now take place on:\nThursday\, January 16\, 2025\n6–8 PM \nWe can’t wait to welcome you for an evening of creativity\, connection\, and inspiration on the 16th! \n\nJoin us for an inspiring conversation with artists Lester Merriweather and Alex Paulus as they discuss their current exhibitions and creative processes. \nLester Merriweather’s ANA•LOG examines agency over Black visualization within American popular culture through layered\, hand-crafted collages. Inspired by Basquiat-Warhol collaborations\, Dr. Dre’s conceptual album The Planets\, and the experimental processes of Jack Whitten\, Merriweather’s work serves as a “Record of Remembered Angers\,” addressing racial disparities in visual culture. \nAlex Paulus’s Size Matters explores scale and proportion\, contrasting small figures in expansive landscapes with large-scale portraits of significant personal figures from his childhood. His work reflects on human existence\, our place in the universe\, and the peculiarities of life on Earth. \nThis is a unique opportunity to engage with two distinct artistic perspectives. \nFree and open to the public. We hope to see you there. \nWhen:\nSaturday\, January 11\, 2025 Rescheduled for Thursday\, January 16\nTime:\n6:00 PM – 8:00 PM\nWhere:\nThe Galleries at Crosstown Arts\n1350 Concourse Ave\, Suite 280\, Memphis\, TN 38104

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Resident Artists Open Studio Night
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts is proud to invite the Memphis community to visit the artist studios. Artists in residence will have their studios open on Friday\, December 2\, from 5 to 7 p.m. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nBrittney Boyd Bullock explores the tension between searching and finding\, obsession and order\, and lightness and darkness through two- and three-dimensional forms. Contemplative and personal\, the process-driven works interrogate anxiety and wonder using materials in a new way\, forcing her to make meaning in the arbitrary jumble. \nBrittney’s work is a sensory dwelling that uses repetition\, color\, and story in ways that trigger joy and wonder. She uses ephemera and memorabilia to reimagine possibilities\, create new solutions\, and ask more questions. Making new contexts for old worlds makes them new again; these new versions of what already exists are how she understands the power of play\, existence\, world-building\, and the human experience. \nR Jason Rawlings is a filmmaker and visual artist residing and working in Memphis\, Tennessee. His work often revolves around the home and how our living spaces connect us to the world at large. The stories are born from a place\, evolve from there\, and are colored by the intricacies of the location. His most recent work\, Natives\, has been featured in both Indie Memphis and Oxford Film Festivals and awarded Best Director by the Mid-South Black Film Festival. He is a graduate of the University of Memphis film program. \nNelson Gutierrez is an artist exploring the constant struggle of individuals and some communities at large for a better life — resilience\, hope\, the search for common ground. His work is informed by personal and collective memories. It is composed of two- and three-dimensional pieces\, conceptual objects and installations that reflect current socio-political issues. Different materials are juxtaposed in a way that provides symbolic relevance to the topic being explored. Diverse mediums are used to express feelings of collective longing\, fear\, grief and hope. \nAngelo Madsen Minax is a filmmaker\, visual artist\, performer\, and educator. His projects consider how human intimacies are woven through personal and collective histories\, cultures\, and kinships. His recent film\, North By Current (2021)\, aired on season 34 of POV (PBS)\, was a New York Times Critics Pick\, and has been called “A beautiful\, complex wonder of a film\,” by Rolling Stone. Madsen is currently a Guggenheim Fellow.

SUMMARY:Virtual Resident Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts resident artists Sepideh Dashti\, Joann Self Selvidge\, and Sarah Elizabeth Cornejo will present artist talks in a virtual event. \nFree and open to the public \nRegister here \n\nArtist Bios \nSepideh Tajalizadeh Dashti\nSepideh Tajalizadeh Dashti is an emerging interdisciplinary artist. Her recent practice is related to exploring her body by creating performance\, video\, photography\, and installations. Through multiple discourses and contexts\, she is always rediscovering\, reinventing\, and reinterpreting her Iranian identity as a pivotal point for exploring her work in multiple and heterogeneous contexts. \nJoann Self Selvidge\nJoann Self Selvidge is an award-winning filmmaker whose documentaries explore issues of work\, creativity\, agency\, and justice. Since 2002\, she has produced\, directed\, and edited more than two dozen projects\, including features (Juvenile\, See the Keepers\, The Art Academy\, The WLOK Story)\, shorts (Robert\, Viola\, Voices of Jericho\, Nude Photos!)\, series (The Juvenile Project\, The Arts Interviews)\, and multimedia installations (Inaugurate the Resistance). \nSarah Elizabeth Cornejo\nSarah Elizabeth Cornejo’s sculptural work utilizes the possibilities within hybridity to speak of a hypothetical place where humans have evolved into hybrid beings with animals\, insects\, and discarded human-made materials. The resulting physical evolution of this voluntary merging challenges social discomfort around bodies that are not easily categorized by blurring the boundaries between animal and human\, living and dead\, animate and inanimate. Her work aims to disrupt notions of human hierarchy\, testing the phenomenon between humanity\, mammality and technology in a chimeric future.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Pecha Kucha: Crosstown Arts Resident Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts resident artists Brian Pera\, Lawrence Matthews\, Clare Johnson\, Khari Wynn\, Tadasuke Jinno\, and Johnathan Payne will discuss their work in a Pecha Kucha-style artist talk. \nThe Crosstown Arts residency program offers multidisciplinary residencies to visiting and Memphis-based artists and curators\, working in any creative discipline including visual and performing arts\, music\, film\, and writing in all genres. \nThe key to Pecha Kucha is the 20×20 format: all presenters show 20 slides for 20 seconds each\, making each presentation concise and dynamic. If you’re wondering what “Pecha Kucha” means\, it draws its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat.” \nPecha Kucha Nights began in Tokyo as an opportunity for artists\, designers and architects to show samples of their work through a concise\, timed presentation in a relaxed community setting. Over the past 10 years\, these events have expanded to hundreds of cities across the globe\, and often include a variety of community members sharing a wide array of interesting (and sometimes hilarious) topics.

SUMMARY:Isabel Theselius: Baby on Board
DESCRIPTION:Works by Crosstown Arts resident artist Isabel Theselius \nIsabel Theselius is a Swedish artist\, currently based in the U.S.\, whose work takes many forms but continually investigates mortality\, desire\, memory\, and more recently\, superstition. By drawing from her own experiences\, memories\, and family relationships\, Theselius’ work is equally poetic and empathetic\, relatable and enigmatic. \nIn the series\, Baby on Board\, consisting of two- and three-dimensional artworks\, Theselius uses humor and superstition as a tool to process her own fears as a parent. In small\, gouache paintings\, Theselius has given her son supernatural powers\, traveling through various landscapes surrounded by different creatures\, sometimes riding on two cats or floating on a flying carpet. \nIn other paintings\, the text ”baby on board” is repeated over and over\, referring to the signs on the back of cars to signal that other drivers should be extra cautious around their vehicle on the road. Only here\, the text is sometimes barely legible\, made in a psychedelic style\, always with a version of the ”evil eye” lurking in the background. In a kind of twisted logic\, Theselius is imagining that she can prevent her fears of her son getting into an accident from happening in real life if she processes them through her art.
