SUMMARY:Up in Arms Collective presents: RESPONSE
DESCRIPTION:What if dissent is a dance? What if revolution begins with a pas de deux or an artful kick in the pants? \nTwenty-one artists gather strength through coming together and creating works that explore the myth of superwoman\, experiences of femininity\, shoes\, burning bridges\, first world privilege\, and untarnished hope. \nUp in Arms Collective is a community of diverse Memphis dance artists who have come together to collaborate and create three evenings of original works and performances. \nEach evening’s performance will be one-of-a kind and feature different dances. Participating dance artists include Bethany Bak\, Sheri Bancroft\, Travis Bradley\, Rebecca Rose Cochran\, Josh Colfer\, Marie Dennan\, Lauren Hales\, Emily Hefley\, Stephanie Hom\, Jill Guyton-Nee\, Orixa Bowers\, Jenn King\, Louisa Koeppel\, Sarah Ledbetter\, Kristen Lucas\, Tamara Prince-Parrish\, Lauren Stallings\, Wayne Smith\, and Erin D.H. Williams along with filmmaker N’Seeka MacPherson and photographer Yasmine Omari. \nUp in Arms Collective was born out of the need for the dance community to respond to what is happening in America in an open and affirming environment. The process leading up to the performances has allowed artists time\, space\, and energy as well as support to build and create\, as they bring their responses to life through movement and dance. \nA response is a reaction to something and an impulse caused by a change or event. The responses are candid\, personal\, and as diverse as the dance artists themselves and explore power\, fear\, truth\, boldness\, self-determination\, activism\, love\, support\, protection\, humor\,and revolution. \nWorld-renowned dance icon Pina Bausch once said: “Dance\, dance\, otherwise we are lost.” \nWhile we are all unique\, Up in Arms believes we are stronger when we come together–united. We find one another and connect and share and discover we are not lost but when we respond through dance\, we are empowered and through RESPONSE\, we hope to leave others empowered. Art has the power to change us all and transform the world. \nDance artist and collaborator Sarah Ledbetter says\, “I’m basically using this platform to\nbush whack some breathing room for the sacred/secular feminine. DESCRIPTION:Quarterly event series presented by Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts \nFebruary topic: Our Monster\, Our Selves: Monstrous Feminine in Horror Film — A Talk by Dr. Marina Levina.\n \nIn this talk\, Dr. Marina Levina will walk us through a brief history of representations of women’s bodies in horror film. She will illustrate how\, and for what reason\, women and the feminine have been portrayed as monstrous\, deviant\, and in need of control and punishment. She argues that these representations are intimately tied to the politics of the past and of the present. Some of the films she will discuss include Cronenberg’s The Brood\, the first Alien film\, Jennifer’s Body\, and Carrie\, amongst others. \nDr. Marina Levina is an Associate Professor of Communication at the University of Memphis. Her scholarship centers on cultural studies of science\, technology and medicine\, and critical media studies. An avid fan of monster and science fiction genres\, she has written on cultural meanings of monstrosity and their relationship to current scientific and technological advances. Amongst other books\, she is the first editor of Monster Culture in the 21st Century: A Reader (Bloomsbury Academic Press\, 2013). DESCRIPTION:Artist installation 5:30-6 p.m. \nDiscussion 6-8 p.m. \n\nFacilitator: Mary Jo Karimnia\nPresenting Artists: \n\nRahLeeCoh Ishakarah\nSammy Anzer\nTiera Washington\n\n\n\n\n\nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series\, organized in partnership with ArtsMemphis\, is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. DESCRIPTION:Free and open-to-the-public dress rehearsal for The Break-Up Show: Episode Six. This comedy troupe transforms the indignities of bad dates and break-up drama into the sort of comedy that may make you feel like it was worth the pain. \nThe Break-Up Show troupe invites everyone to stop in for a behind-the-scenes look at how comedy is born from romantic devastation. Watch a “warts and all” dress rehearsal as they prepare for their February 11th — one-night only — appearance at the New Daisy on Beale Street featuring music by The McStays and Robby. Only the live portions of the show will be rehearsed and\, just like in a real rehearsal\, the cast will be stopping and starting\, messing up\, and most likely breaking up (with laughter) for most of the evening. Stop in for a preview! \nThe rehearsal coincides with the opening of “We Need to Talk\,” an open-call exhibition of break-up art and artifacts at 422 N. Cleveland from 5-8 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:A high energy two-man “opera\,” combining elements of theatrics\, music and projection art\, that runs approximately 30 minutes.\n\n \nPlot description:\nA proud young man and his weather-beaten partner approach the end of a fur-gathering journey in this romanticized tableau. The 1978 Frontier Classic seeks to identify people and their patterns\, from the Yukon to the Grid Iron. Jake and Ryan don their buckskins\, chow down on a bucket of wings\, and crack open a cold one in this great American fanfare.\n \nThe 1978 Frontier Classic explores parallels between the years 1848\, 1978\, and today. We are interested in representing people\, their patterns\, and how they relate to contemporary American patriotism. Research and specificity are paramount in our work. Our accuracy and research behind each element of the piece is contrasted with a superficial layer of absurdity. \nPresented by Goldstar

DESCRIPTION:Artist installation 5-6 pm \nDiscussion 6-8 pm \n\nFacilitator: Terri Phillips\nParticipating Artists:\nBen Butler\nLance Turner\nLisa Cochran \n\nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series\, organized in partnership with ArtsMemphis\, is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. DESCRIPTION:Fall tour stop for hip-hop artist TAME and electronic producer AF THE NAYSAYER. \nAbout TAME\nThe Aspiring Me (a.k.a. TAME) is the oldest son of late Houston hip-hop legend Big Mello. Lineage aside\, TAME has gained a reputation not only as one of the city’s wittiest MCs\, but also as one of its most versatile producers. Since 2010\, he has toured across North America and amassed a sizable discography; “OK Whatever\,” his second album and sixth release overall\, was released this past spring. Fans of artists like Chance the Rapper\, Childish Gambino\, and Fat Tony (who guests on TAME’s latest album\, “OK Whatever”) will greatly enjoy TAME’s music. \nAbout AF THE NAYSAYER\nAF THE NAYSAYER is a New Orleans-based producer whose music blends 1980s R&B with 1990s G-funk. His debut EP\, “The Autodidact Instrumentals\,” has served as a backdrop for many BMX web edits (Fitbikeco\, Dan’s Comp\, ESPN). AF has performed 300+ shows across North America since the EP’s release\, while also curating “Dolo Jazz Suite\,” a regional showcase for fellow beatmakers. He is also the New Orleans ambassador for Red Bull Music Academy. AF will release his follow-up EP\, “Armed Wing Battle Unit\,” this month. Fans of artists like Dam-Funk\, Flying Lotus\, and Lone will greatly enjoy AF’s music.
