SUMMARY:Open Crit
DESCRIPTION:Artist installation 5:30-6 p.m. \nDiscussion 6-8 p.m. \n\nFacilitator: Susan Maakestad\nPresenting Artist(s):\nZach Kremer\nHollie McDonald\nErica Qualy\n\n\n\n\nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series\, organized in partnership with ArtsMemphis\, is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \n\nTo participate\, artists can sign up here: \nOpen Crit Request form \n  \nContact Mary Jo at maryjo@crosstownarts.org with any questions!  \nArtists are asked to bring no more than 8 individual pieces (in any medium). Maximum run time for time-based work(s) is 10 minutes. \nParticipating artists are encouraged to invite friends\, peers and colleagues to the open crits\, both to see their work in progress and to give constructive feedback. \nSpecial thanks to Art Center for donating a $25 gift certificate for each participating artist. \nOrganized by Crosstown Arts in partnership with ArtsMemphis ArtsAccelerator.

SUMMARY:Open Crit
DESCRIPTION:Artist installation 5:30-6 p.m. \nDiscussion 6-8 p.m. \n\nFacilitator: Susan Maakestad\nPresenting Artists: \nEszter Sziksz\nAnn Klicka\nEthan Taylor\nKristin Petersen\n\n\n\n\nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series\, organized in partnership with ArtsMemphis\, is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice.

SUMMARY:MicroCinema Club
DESCRIPTION:Monthly short film screening series\, presented by Indie Memphis & Crosstown Arts. \nThis month: The Ann Arbor Film Festival Tour\nThe longest running avant-garde and experimental film festival in North America (est. 1963) presents nine new short films that will expand your imagination. \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m./Screening begins at 7 p.m. Admission is pay-what-you-can. \n\nMore information:\nNEITHER GOD NOR SANTA MARIA | Samuel M. Delgado and Helena Girón \nMadrid\, Spain | 2015 | 12 min\nIn the daily life of a woman\, the magic of her tales begin to materialize as night falls. Night is the time when travel is possible. \nBISONHEAD | Elizabeth Lo\nLos Angeles\, CA | 2015 | 10 min\nA family of Ponderai Native Americans embark on a controversial journey from northern Montana to Yellowstone to take part in the federal culling of 900 wild bison. \nTHE MESS | Peter Burr\nBrooklyn\, NY | 2015 | 14 min\nIn this game-like computer animation we take a journey to the threshold of a utopian labyrinth. Following the perspective of a solitary female figure whose job is to clean up the mess it inadvertently spawned\, we end up in a seemingly endless hall of mirrors. \nTHE PERPETUAL MOTION OF MY LOVE FOR YOU | Karen Yasinsky\nBaltimore\, MD | 2016 | 8 min\nA collage film slipping between narrative starts of images and sounds: May Sarton’s snapshots\, a resplendent Liz Taylor\, internal and external awkwardnesses\, a short respite of peace and a dogged\, deeply sad positivism. If this movie was a person\, it would be the awkward girl\, but she will never gain grace and confidence in her intelligence when older. She will forever remain in 8th grade with her frustrations and ambiguities. \nLOVE UNDER WILL OF THE HAGS LONG TOOTH | Mica O’Herlihy\nWestby\, WI | 2015 | 4 min\nA psychotronic gender-fucked pagan meditation on the animal in us all. \nFUNDIR | Allison Cekala\nBoston\, MA | 2015 | 23 min\nA biography of a material — the processing and importation of Boston’s road salt from one of its main sources in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile to the ice-covered streets of Boston. \nTHE RESONANCE | Mateusz Sadowski\n6 min | 2013 | Poznan\, Poland\nThe Resonance was made using stop-motion animation. The artist split the recorded footage into separate frames which were printed and re-photographed. The process underlined the characteristics of two contrary realities – photography and video. Providing the viewer with an insight into its own making\, Sadowski’s video is both a reflection on scientific theories about the structure of the world and an attempt to create an alternative reality. Winner\, Best Animated Film \nBABA DANA TALKS TO THE WOLVES | Ralitsa Doncheva\nBulgaria/Canada | 2015 | 11 min\nAn impressionistic portrait of Baba Dana and her solitary existence in one of the oldest monasteries in Bulgaria\, Zelenikovsky Monastery. Winner\, The Eileen Maitland Award for Women’s Voice \nnot even nothing can be free of ghosts | Rainer Kohlberger\nVienna\, Austria | 2016 | 11 min\nAn Algorithmic work generated entirely from computer-generated code; where “the intentional overload of the human perception apparatus leads to visual impressions that appear exclusively in the literal “eye of the beholder.” These “ghosts” appear from “nothing” and are “nothing”; they are mere hallucinations evoked by the imperfect human-biological data processing system” – Norbert Pfaffenbichler.

SUMMARY:Shoot & Splice: The Art of Audio
DESCRIPTION:Monthly filmmaking forum presented by Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts \nMarch topic: The Art of Audio\n\n\n\n\n\nThe recording and mixing of production sound are easily the most under-appreciated and misunderstood disciplines in filmmaking. All too frequently\, quality movies and videos are ruined because the proper respect is not given to the craft of audio engineering. \nPlease join us as Running Pony sound technician Nathan Reisman and Music + Arts Studio post-production audio engineer Kevin Houston lead a hands-on workshop and discussion to help you improve the sound quality of your next project. They will walk us through the audio pre-production\, production\, and post-production processes\, best on-set and in-studio practices\, as well as a breakdown of essential gear for both low- and high-budget projects.  \nDoors open at 6:30 p.m./panel discussion at 7 p.m. Free and open to the public. Complimentary beverages will be available.

SUMMARY:Up in Arms Collective presents: RESPONSE
DESCRIPTION:What if dissent is a dance? What if revolution begins with a pas de deux or an artful kick in the pants? \nTwenty-one artists gather strength through coming together and creating works that explore the myth of superwoman\, experiences of femininity\, shoes\, burning bridges\, first world privilege\, and untarnished hope. \nUp in Arms Collective is a community of diverse Memphis dance artists who have come together to collaborate and create three evenings of original works and performances. \nEach evening’s performance will be one-of-a kind and feature different dances. Participating dance artists include Bethany Bak\, Sheri Bancroft\, Travis Bradley\, Rebecca Rose Cochran\, Josh Colfer\, Marie Dennan\, Lauren Hales\, Emily Hefley\, Stephanie Hom\, Jill Guyton-Nee\, Orixa Bowers\, Jenn King\, Louisa Koeppel\, Sarah Ledbetter\, Kristen Lucas\, Tamara Prince-Parrish\, Lauren Stallings\, Wayne Smith\, and Erin D.H. Williams along with filmmaker N’Seeka MacPherson and photographer Yasmine Omari. \nUp in Arms Collective was born out of the need for the dance community to respond to what is happening in America in an open and affirming environment. The process leading up to the performances has allowed artists time\, space\, and energy as well as support to build and create\, as they bring their responses to life through movement and dance. \nA response is a reaction to something and an impulse caused by a change or event. The responses are candid\, personal\, and as diverse as the dance artists themselves and explore power\, fear\, truth\, boldness\, self-determination\, activism\, love\, support\, protection\, humor\,and revolution. \nWorld-renowned dance icon Pina Bausch once said: “Dance\, dance\, otherwise we are lost.” \nWhile we are all unique\, Up in Arms believes we are stronger when we come together–united. We find one another and connect and share and discover we are not lost but when we respond through dance\, we are empowered and through RESPONSE\, we hope to leave others empowered. Art has the power to change us all and transform the world. \nDance artist and collaborator Sarah Ledbetter says\, “I’m basically using this platform to\nbush whack some breathing room for the sacred/secular feminine. To call up friends in big\nplaces that we desperately need now. I’m not trying to show off. I’m trying to show up.” \nTickets are $10 cash only and available at the door. To find out more about RESPONSE and/or make reservations\, like Up in Arms Collective on Facebook.
