SUMMARY:Shards of Color and Other Broken Things
DESCRIPTION:Shards of Color and Other Broken Things is an exploration of color and the way it’s manipulated by image and perspective. \nJoy Murray works in a narrative style and uses text in her paintings. She uses many kinds of paper\, watercolor\, acrylic\, and collage. She explores concepts of transformation and the intersection of human life and the natural world. This show will feature many of her pieces focused on disability and sacred transformation of the body. \nTheOuterCircle travels all over the world to expand his vision. His abstract paintings voice subconscious ideas. His pieces have multiple layers and create texture within color. In addition to paint brushes\, he uses everything from his fingers to credit cards to achieve a chaotic balance between color and texture. \nThe show will also feature the music of guitarist Mark Allen. \n

SUMMARY:Film Screening — Suppressed: The Fight to Vote
DESCRIPTION:A new film by Robert Greenwald \nSuppressed: The Fight to Vote is a new documentary by Robert Greenwald (director of Outfoxed\, Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price\, and Making a Killing: Guns\, Greed\, & the NRA)\, weaves together personal stories from voters across the state of Georgia to paint an undeniable picture of voter suppression in the 2018 midterm election where Stacey Abrams fought to become the first Black female governor in the U.S. The issues Georgians faced included polling place closures\, voter purges\, missing absentee ballots\, extreme wait times and a host of voter ID issues – all of which disproportionately prevented many students and people of color from casting their ballots. \nSuppressed: The Fight to Vote features experts\, poll watchers and everyday Georgians speaking to the reality of voter suppression and the threat it poses in 2020. In a race that was ultimately decided by 54\,723 votes\, the film exposes how the basic constitutional right to vote to continues to be under siege in America. If your vote wasn’t important\, they wouldn’t try to suppress it. \nPresented by Team Upstream\, a social justice group from Church of the River\, Memphis\, TN.  Team Upstream concentrates on voter registration\, apathy\, and suppression. \nRefreshments at 6 pm | Film at 6:30 pm

SUMMARY:Up in Arms Collective presents Response 4
DESCRIPTION:Normal feels like lifetimes ago\, and it is uncertain if it will ever return. Tweets undermine truth\, and sometimes\, it is difficult to keep up with what is real and what is not. We live in uncertain times. \nResistance. Persistence. We continue to raise our voices. Twenty-two artists converge at Crosstown Arts to create original works that explore today’s America. Up in Arms Collective was born out of the need for the dance community to respond to what is happening in America in an open and affirming environment. What originally began as a community of diverse Memphis dance artists has since grown to include local filmmakers\, actors\, and artists. \nPerforming artists include Sheri Bancroft\, Jasmine Bledsoe\, Orixa Bowers\, Burton Bridges\, Rebecca Rose Cochran\, Marie Dennan\, Tbj Jones\, Louisa Koeppel\, Kristen Osborne Lucas\, Christina McKinney\, Our Own Voice Theatre Troupe\, Wayne Smith\, and Micah Winter along with artists Suzannah Herbert\, Waverly Herbert\, Jenean Morrison\, and Lesley Young; filmmakers Laura Jean Hocking\, Joel Rose\, Sallie Sabbatini\, Kyle Statham; and photographer Stephanie Wexler. \nThrough community collaboration\, artists are empowered\, and through RESPONSE 4\, Up in Arms Collective hopes to leave others empowered. Art has the power to change us all and transform the world. Our responses are candid\, personal\, and as diverse as the artists themselves and explore power\, fear\, truth\, boldness\, self-determination\, activism\, love\, support\, protection\, humor\, and revolution. \nTickets are $10 (cash only) and available at the door. Seating is general admission and on a first come\, first serve basis. \nDonations will be made to Mid-South Immigration Advocates\, Memphis for All\, and Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi.

SUMMARY:Isabel Theselius: Baby on Board
DESCRIPTION:Works by Crosstown Arts resident artist Isabel Theselius \nIsabel Theselius is a Swedish artist\, currently based in the U.S.\, whose work takes many forms but continually investigates mortality\, desire\, memory\, and more recently\, superstition. By drawing from her own experiences\, memories\, and family relationships\, Theselius’ work is equally poetic and empathetic\, relatable and enigmatic. \nIn the series\, Baby on Board\, consisting of two- and three-dimensional artworks\, Theselius uses humor and superstition as a tool to process her own fears as a parent. In small\, gouache paintings\, Theselius has given her son supernatural powers\, traveling through various landscapes surrounded by different creatures\, sometimes riding on two cats or floating on a flying carpet. \nIn other paintings\, the text ”baby on board” is repeated over and over\, referring to the signs on the back of cars to signal that other drivers should be extra cautious around their vehicle on the road. Only here\, the text is sometimes barely legible\, made in a psychedelic style\, always with a version of the ”evil eye” lurking in the background. In a kind of twisted logic\, Theselius is imagining that she can prevent her fears of her son getting into an accident from happening in real life if she processes them through her art.

DESCRIPTION:New art by Nick Canterucci \nOrganized by the artist \nThe age of disillusionment  is the train of thought that opens the 16th Exhibit from outsider artist Nick Canterucci.\n\nHis latest body of work travels the frontier of Abstract Expressionism\, touching on several styles\, while marrying the Cooper-Young artist’s love of folk art\, with hidden messages. Those patrons who are familiar with his mindset will translate what Canterucci is suggesting\, as he continues to stake his claim as one of the many artists of the ART 21 generation.

SUMMARY:Gonerfest 16 Presents: The Puppet Worlds Of Miss Pussycat
DESCRIPTION:Miss Pussycat will perform a new puppet show\, “The History of Egypt\,” in conjunction with Gonerfest 16. \nMusic by synth master Benni\nFree \nThe Puppet Worlds of Miss Pussycat features an installation of puppets and their worlds by New-Orleans based artist\, musician\, and puppeteer\, Panacea Theriac (also known as Miss Pussycat). The exhibition includes puppets and puppet theaters\, along with videos\, photographs and ceramic sculptures of her puppets. The Puppet Worlds of Miss Pussycat highlights characters and worlds from several of her last puppet shows\, including The Western Village Shopping Village\, Clothes Made by Small Furry Animals\, Frenchy and Jett\, The Happy Castle of Goblinburg\, and The Cookie Carnival Baking Contest. In her work\, Miss Pussycat’s creates anthropomorphic fantasies that often relate to her own experience as an artist and musician. She’s in a band and her puppets have a band that releases records\, while others are artists and museum workers in a fictitious museum. Each character assumes a life of their own in an ever-evolving series of stories. \nBio: \nPanacea Theriac’s most widely known public role is as Miss Pussycat\, performing puppet shows\, singing\, and playing maracas in the band “Quintron and Miss Pussycat”. Based in New Orleans\, Quintron and Miss Pussycat present live organ-driven party music and puppet shows at parties all over the world. \nBorn in Antlers\, Oklahoma\, Theriac began her career in art and puppetry as a child in the Southern Baptist Church of Antlers as part of the Christian Puppet Youth Ministry. She later moved to New Orleans and started a secret nightclub called Pussycat Caverns\, which hosted bands and all types of performance in a unique and lively atmosphere. Since 1997 she has run a similar secret night club\, The Spellcaster Lodge\, with the artist Quintron. Both of these enterprises have brought bands and other inspired people together to put on fun shows for the New Orleans 9th Ward neighborhood. For over 20 years\, she has presented live puppet shows in rock clubs\, libraries\, and secret clubhouses all around the world. Miss Pussycat has also made a number of puppet movies and videos\, including Trixie and the Treetunks\, North Pole Nutrias\, and Electric Swamp. \nExhibitions and installations are an important part of her work. These shows display puppets and their worlds in galleries and museums and have included exhibits at The New Orleans Museum of Art and an installation at the Center for Contemporary Art in New Orleans. In 2017\, she was a featured artist for Prospect 4\, New Orleans’ citywide contemporary art triennial\, with an exhibition at The Ogden Museum of Southern Art. In 2014\, she and Quintron were each awarded a Rauschenberg Residency. \nwww.quintronandmisspussycat.com\nwww.panaceatheriac.com

SUMMARY:Remission
DESCRIPTION:Art exhibition featuring new work by Noah Miller \nThis series of work was made by Miller during a season of treatment and recovery during chemotherapy. He self labels this as “not my best artwork\, but necessary for the process and for the mind\, a self catharsis in a way.” \nBy placing this artwork out of his mind and having it published\, he plans to move forward in life and with his work. This is a celebration of life in addition to an exhibition of thought. Projections\, photography\, poetry\, and collages were made as a way to not let his hands or mind be idle during the process of treatment.
