SUMMARY:The Moonpie Project presents: Brandon Marshall
DESCRIPTION:A new mural by Brandon Marshall memorializing artist Ronnie “BETOR” Bobal \nLocation: Crosstown Arts alley between 430 & 438 N. Cleveland \nFree food + drinks \nThe Moonpie Project is an ongoing\, rotating mural series curated by Michael Roy in memory of muralist Brad Wells. \nOrganized in collaboration with Crosstown Arts \n\n \n\n\n \n\nAbout Brandon Marshall:\nBrandon Marshall is a visual artist specializing in mural-making and public art with a strong focus on community engagement and mobilization. Marshall’s current professional endeavors stem from an extensive background in the hip-hop community as a graffiti artist\, B-Boy\, promoter\, and educator. Marshall is the founder and lead organizer of the “Soul Food” graffiti art festival and curates other rotating walls in Memphis. He has secured wall space and painted at mural festivals from Denver to Melbourne and constantly strives for excellence within each of his artistic practices. \nAbout  Ronnie “BETOR” Bobal:\nRonnie “BETOR” Bobal was among the first generation of graffiti artists born and raised in Memphis\, Tennessee. Bobal was considered a pioneer of style and was respected nationwide among graffiti writers for his unique abstract lettering styles. In his pieces\, the viewer will note the thoughtful construction of his alphabet through the use of ribbon-like textures\, which are contrasted by hard-nosed\, slab-serif bars. BETOR proudly represented the U.H. Crew locally\, and the prestigious\, Los Angeles-based I.C.R. Crew. Although considered by many to be royalty within the subculture\, he simultaneously held a reputation for his laidback demeanor and notorious humility. His legacy as a dedicated and prolific master of the craft lives on through his crew mates and friends and by the artwork he has left behind throughout the country.

SUMMARY:The Moonpie Project Presents Vitus Shell
DESCRIPTION:A new mural by Vitus Shell \nLocation: Crosstown Arts alley between 430 & 438 N. Cleveland \nFree food + drinks \nThe Moonpie Project is an ongoing\, rotating mural series curated by Michael Roy in memory of muralist Brad Wells. \nOrganized in collaboration with Crosstown Arts \n\nVitus Shell’s paintings encompass a depth and intensity usually displayed in the work of artists far past his age. While a student at Memphis College of Art\, the Monroe\, Louisiana\, native traveled and learned more about different cultures and art forms. He attended the National Black Fine Arts Show in 1999 for the first time and received a first-hand view of the inner workings of the art world. Other artists he met while at MCA who have continuously inspired him include Brenda Joysmith\, George Hunt\, and Alonzo Davis. \nTo date\, he has accumulated an impressive list of achievements\, some of which include: participating in exhibits at universities\, museums\, and private galleries across the country; painting a mural for the National Civil Rights Museum’s NBA Pioneers exhibit; and being commissioned to do public art by the Memphis UrbanArt Commission. Opportunities for Shell continue to arise for him and he leaves himself open to all they have to offer. He is humble about his bright future\, yet poised to become of the greatest artistic “voices” of his generation.

SUMMARY:Open Crit
DESCRIPTION:Artist installation 5-6 pm \nDiscussion 6-8 pm \n\n  \nFacilitator: Terri Phillips\nParticipating Artists:\nLucero Soto\nSara Moseley\nLauren Pigford\nEG Balton \n\nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series\, organized in partnership with ArtsMemphis\, is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \n\nTo participate\, artists can sign up here: \nOpen Crit Request form \n  \nContact Mary Jo at maryjo@crosstownarts.org with any questions!  \nArtists are asked to bring no more than 8 individual pieces (in any medium). Maximum run time for time-based work(s) is 10 minutes. \nParticipating artists are encouraged to invite friends\, peers and colleagues to the open crits\, both to see their work in progress and to give constructive feedback. \nOrganized by Crosstown Arts in partnership with ArtsMemphis ArtsAccelerator.
