The mission of the organization is to promote the idea that substance – not surface – is the heart of music creation and perception. We live in an era where dogma is out of place; composers can\, and should\, draw from an unprecedentedly broad array of influences in their work – including popular music\, avant-garde techniques\, and everything in between. The ten ICEBERG composers hail from different schools and cultivate radically different sounds\, but their contrasting musical languages belie shared emphasis on structure and depth of meaning. When these artists compose for the same ensemble and present their works during a joint concert\, the result is a glimpse into the ever-widening possibilities of art music in the twenty-first century. ICEBERG is committed to radical stylistic inclusiveness\, excellence of craft\, dialogue with the audience\, and a modernization of the concert-going experience. \n \n\nAbout Blueshift Ensemble:\nBlueshift is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. The ensemble draws upon Memphis’s uniquely diverse musical heritage by combining classical music with popular music genres such as rock\, blues\, and soul and featuring local musicians\, visual artists\, and composers.

We facilitate dialogue and collaboration between the devoted supporters of jazz and the brand new constituents – those new to the genre – for the furthering of the jazz community. We provide a bridge between leading artists and a community that typically does not embrace jazz by promoting concerts in various venues to generate an atmosphere that is viable for the absorption of pure jazz.

Cleveland \nFree food + drinks. A limited-edition\, enamel pin featuring a design by Benjamin Piece will be sold during the event. \nThe Moonpie Project is an ongoing\, rotating mural series curated by Michael Roy in memory of muralist Brad Wells. \nOrganized in collaboration with Crosstown Arts \n\n\n\n“For many people\, imagination is their only escape from circumstance. When one lives in a world quick to snuff out wonder and promise\, it becomes necessary to create your own. My images are the world as I choose to see it. They are my acknowledgements of\, but refusals to submit to an increasingly divided society. They are my reminders that even in difficult times\, beauty endures.” — Benjamin Pierce \nBenjamin is a draftsman and a painter. He attended Washington University where he received his BFA in illustration and graphic design and is currently working as an art director. SUMMARY:"Barrier Free" Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Artist Yancy Villa-Calvo will discuss “Barrier Free\,” her socially engaged art installation on display in Crosstown Concourse’s Central Atrium. A Q&A will follow. The talk will take place in front of the installation. \n\nBarrier Free is a portion of a socially engaged art installation designed for the Latino Memphis Festival by Yancy Villa-Calvo. The installation is on view through June 5th. \nBuilding on the current and controversial idea of the proposed wall along the US-Mexico border\, the installation aims to create awareness and encourages viewers to pause\, reflect\, and act. \nThe installation attempts to be inclusive and open to interpretation. Symbols make reference to barriers around nationality\, race\, religion\, sexual orientation and identity\, gender\, and socioeconomic aspects. This project is less about the actual wall and more about the systematic attempts to divide individuals\, families\, and communities. \n\n  \nioby Campaign

Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \n\nTo participate\, artists can sign up here: \nOpen Crit Request form \n  \nContact Mary Jo at maryjo@crosstownarts.org with any questions!  \nArtists are asked to bring no more than 8 individual pieces (in any medium). SUMMARY:The Moonpie Project presents: Brandon Marshall
DESCRIPTION:A new mural by Brandon Marshall memorializing artist Ronnie “BETOR” Bobal \nLocation: Crosstown Arts alley between 430 & 438 N. Cleveland \nFree food + drinks \nThe Moonpie Project is an ongoing\, rotating mural series curated by Michael Roy in memory of muralist Brad Wells. \nOrganized in collaboration with Crosstown Arts \n\n \n\n\n \n\nAbout Brandon Marshall:\nBrandon Marshall is a visual artist specializing in mural-making and public art with a strong focus on community engagement and mobilization. Marshall’s current professional endeavors stem from an extensive background in the hip-hop community as a graffiti artist\, B-Boy\, promoter\, and educator. Marshall is the founder and lead organizer of the “Soul Food” graffiti art festival and curates other rotating walls in Memphis. He has secured wall space and painted at mural festivals from Denver to Melbourne and constantly strives for excellence within each of his artistic practices. \nAbout  Ronnie “BETOR” Bobal:\nRonnie “BETOR” Bobal was among the first generation of graffiti artists born and raised in Memphis\, Tennessee. Bobal was considered a pioneer of style and was respected nationwide among graffiti writers for his unique abstract lettering styles. In his pieces\, the viewer will note the thoughtful construction of his alphabet through the use of ribbon-like textures\, which are contrasted by hard-nosed\, slab-serif bars. BETOR proudly represented the U.H. Crew locally\, and the prestigious\, Los Angeles-based I.C.R. Crew. Although considered by many to be royalty within the subculture\, he simultaneously held a reputation for his laidback demeanor and notorious humility. His legacy as a dedicated and prolific master of the craft lives on through his crew mates and friends and by the artwork he has left behind throughout the country.
