SUMMARY:Visiting Artist Margaret Wrinkle
DESCRIPTION:Reading and Discussion of Wash: a novel with award-winning author Margaret Wrinkle\, accompanied by an exhibition of photography by the artist and a reception \n  \nSponsored by V02 Networx\nWash\, written by Margaret Wrinkle\, reexamines slavery in ways that challenge contemporary assumptions about race\, history and power as it carries the reader from the American South to West Africa and deep into the ancestral stories that reside in the soul. \nCrosstown Arts will host Margaret Wrinkle on the evening of Tuesday\, October 15\, for a reading of Wash\, followed by a conversation between the artist and Ladrica Menson-Furr (Director of African and African American Studies at the University of Memphis).  The reading will be accompanied by an installation of Wrinkle’s photography and a reception. A booksigning will follow the discussion. \nPublished by Grove/Atlantic and accompanied by an exhibition of photographs\, Wash has been short listed for the Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize and for the Crook’s Corner Prize for exceptional debut novels set in the American South. \nBorn and raised in Birmingham\, Alabama\, Margaret Wrinkle is a writer\, filmmaker\, educator and visual artist.  Her award-winning documentary\,broken\ground\, about the racial divide in her historically conflicted hometown\, was featured on NPR’s Morning Edition and was a winner of the National Council on Foundations’ Film Festival. \nCopies of Wash will be for sale. \nLearn more at margaretwrinkle.com \nPress and Praise:\n \n\n“Wrinkle’s tender first novel…is both redemptive and affirming.”\nThe New York Times Editor’s Choice  (pdf) \n“A masterly literary work….This debut occasions celebration. Haunting\, tender and superbly measured\, Wash is both redemptive and affirming.”\nThe New York Times Book Review  (pdf) \n\n“The voices of the past cannot speak for themselves and must rely on the artists of the future to honor them. It’s a profound responsibility and one that Margaret Wrinkle meets in her brilliant novel\, Wash.”\nThe Wall Street Journal  (pdf) \n“Never has a fictionalized window into the relationship between slave and master opened onto such believable territory….Wash unfolds like a dreamy\, impressionistic landscape….[A] luminous book.”\nThe Atlanta Journal-Constitution  (pdf) \n“Books like William Styron’s The Confessions of Nat Turner\, Toni Morrison’s Beloved\, Edward P. Jones’ The Known World\, and Russell Banks’ Cloudsplitter form a kind of Truth and Reconciliation Commission of their own. Add Margaret Wrinkle’s Wash to that illustrious company.”\nThe Dallas Morning News  (pdf)\n \n“…Wash achieves something extraordinary: a full-fledged confrontation with one of the most difficult aspects of our nation’s history… Wrinkle has given us an honest and important expression of hope… a firm foothold that leads in the direction of truth and reconciliation. We would do well to take this step.”\nThe Charleston Post and Courier  (pdf) \n“A marvel. By turns grim and lyrical\, heart-wrenching and hopeful.”\nPeople (4 stars; a People Pick) (pdf) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Memfeast 4: V&E Greenline
DESCRIPTION:2013 Winner: Jeannie Tomlinson Saltmarsh: Are there fish in Lick Creek? \nPresented by Crosstown Arts in collaboration with Vollintine Evergreen Community Association and V&E Greenline \nSponsored by Commercial Advisors and Southern Sun Asset Management \nSOLD OUT \nLocally-sourced dinner catered by chef Miles McMath; music from Deering and Down; and artist presentations of proposals for public art projects for the Greenline. \n\nFEAST (Funding Emerging Artists with Sustainable Tactics) is an annual public dinner designed to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund emerging art makers. MemFeast is Memphis’ local version founded and facilitated by Crosstown Arts\, helping to rethink how the arts are financed and experienced communally. \nThe mission of MemFeast is to support a diverse cross section of contemporary artistic and social practices\, and to provide local artists with new opportunities to produce work that engages the community. Unlike many conventional grant programs\, MemFeast brings people together for a communal dinner and conversation centered on creativity and innovation\, where artists receive funding immediately and are enabled to make timely work. \nAt each MemFeast\, anyone from the community can buy a ticket for a locally sourced dinner\, along with drinks and a ballot to vote on the night’s presentations. During the meal\, a selected group of local artists make presentations of their proposed projects. At the end of the night\, the audience votes for their favorite idea and the project with the most votes is awarded $5\,000 (from the ticket sales and other sponsorships) to produce the work. \nCrosstown Arts will present the fourth MemFeast in collaboration with the V&E Greenline Committee and Vollintine Evergreen Community Association (VECA).  Local artists\, designers\, and community members are invited to submit proposals for site-specific public art projects along the V&E Greenline\, a 1.8 mile “linear park” and first “rails-to-trails” project in Memphis.  The trail stretches between the Sears building at N. Watkins & North Parkway\, to Springdale St & Vollintine Avenue\, and has intersections at Stonewall\, Evergreen\, McLean\, and Jackson. \nMemFeast 4 celebrates the V&E Greenline as a sustainable stimulus of community in midtown Memphis\, engaging a diverse range of users and uses both socially and geographically.  To learn more about the V&E Greenline visit http://www.vegreenline.org. \nThe MemFeast dinner will take place on May 18\, outdoors at the intersection of the V&E Greenline and Tutwiler in the Vollintine Evergreen Historic District. \nClick here to download PDF of this information and call for proposals\n \n

SUMMARY:Tales of Modern Rocketry Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of nine weeks in the fall of 2012\, the sixth-grade “Rocket Writers” of the new Gordon Science & Arts Academy met for a workshop with Nat Akin\, our director of outreach & education\, to compose creative work for the first book-length project of our new after-school arts program\, story booth.Tales of Modern Rocketry is the collection of science fiction stories dreamed up by these young writers\, each accompanied by an original illustration from artist Derrick Dent\, and introduced with a foreword by former NASA astronaut Dr. Rhea Seddon\, one of the first women selected for the Space Shuttle program. \nOn Thursday\, February 7\, Crosstown Arts celebrated this book release at a launch party with the families\, friends\, and faculty of Gordon Science & Arts Academy in our new performance and exhibition space at 430 N. Cleveland. After mingling over music and food\, the writers read excerpts from their stories to public applause. Then the book was officially unveiled to the student writers and the gathered audience\, and the young writers were on hand to sign copies of the book. \nThis book and event serve as the first public “picture” of the kind of collaborative\, creative work story booth intends to do with middle- and high-school students in the greater Crosstown community. If you’re a young person who might be interested in participating in our programs\, or an adult interested in volunteering to help with projects like this\, there’s more information here. \nThursday\, February 7\, 5 to 6:30 pm\n430 N. Cleveland \nMusic by DJ Siphne Sylve at 5 pm; Student readings at 5:30 pm; Book signing at 6 pm \nSee examples of artist Derrick Dent’s work at www.derrickdent.com. \nLearn more about Gordon Science & Arts Academy at www.gestaltcs.org/gordonscienceandartsacademy. \n

SUMMARY:Robin Salant: Crosstown Lights
DESCRIPTION:Winning Project: Memfeast 2 \nFrom the Commercial Appeal: \nCrosstown canvas comes alive with color\nFrom Staff Reports\nTuesday\, September 20\, 2011 \n\nA large crowd on Friday night witnessed the artful lighting of the main body of the old Sears Crosstown building. \nScores of cars pulled into the parking lot on Cleveland near North Parkway for a different kind of tailgating event. \nNearly 300 windows form a large grid on the south side of the vacant building. About 40 windows in the middle were used by artist Robin Salant as a canvas for her colorful\, moving light\, all to the delight of onlookers. \nNext\, eyes will turn to the art deco tower at the front of the 1.4 million-square-foot building. \nSalant will light its windows with moving color starting at 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 22. \nShe won a Crosstown Arts commission in a MemFEAST event to create art that brings attention to the planned redevelopment of the long-vacant building. \nFlipping the switch on the tower lights will be part of another event at Cleveland at North Parkway on Oct. 22.
