DESCRIPTION:430 N. Cleveland\nSecond Tuesday of Each Month\nArtist Setup: 5 – 6 pm / Critique & Discussion: 6 – 8 pm \nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series\, organized in partnership with ArtsMemphis\, is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. The series will take place at Crosstown Arts exhibition space at 430 N. Cleveland. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \n\nTo participate\, artists can send the following info via email to Brittney Bullock (brittney@ crosstownarts.org) with the subject line “Open Crit.” Submissions will be accepted and scheduled based on availability. Cleveland)\n7- 9 pm: Program & Book-signing in the Gallery \nCrosstown Arts and The Booksellers at Laurelwood welcome photojournalist Alysia Burton Steele to Memphis to celebrate the publication of Delta Jewels\, her collection of portraits and oral histories of church mothers of the Mississippi Delta. \nThe event is free and open to the public and will include a program and book-signing with the artist\, an art exhibition of photo prints from the book\, live choir music\, food & drinks. Several of the church mothers featured in the book will also be present. \nInspired by memories of her beloved grandmother\, photographer and author Alysia Burton Steele–picture editor on a Pulitzer Prize-winning team–combines heart-wrenching narrative with poignant photographs of more than 50 female church elders in the Mississippi Delta. \nThese ordinary women lived extraordinary lives under the harshest conditions of the Jim Crow era and during the courageous changes of the Civil Rights Movement. With the help of local pastors\, Steele recorded these living witnesses to history and folk ways\, and shares the significance of being a Black woman–child\, daughter\, sister\, wife\, mother\, and grandmother in Mississippi–a Jewel of the Delta. From the stand Mrs. Tennie Self took for her marriage to be acknowledged in the phone book\, to the life-threatening sacrifice required to vote for the first time\, these 50 inspiring portraits are the faces of love and triumph that will teach readers faith and courage in difficult times. \n\nAlysia Burton Steele has been a photographer for over 25 years and currently teaches photojournalism\, layout and design\, multimedia\, and journalism writing at the University of Mississippi.

Have you ever asked yourself what a producer even does?! \nFilm Producers raise money for projects\, hire directors\, DP’s\, actors and editors\, manage schedules\, find distributors\, massage egos and everything in between. Please join us for a discussion with three of the most talented producers in Memphis\, Waheed AlQawasmi\, Laura Jean Hocking and Ryan Watt. \n\n  \nWaheed AlQawasmi started his career as a producer and filmmaker in high school\, where he garnered a number of awards including the first National Student Emmy Awards at the age of 15. Waheed’s work includes Home Town Glory and Scorned. Waheed produced and directed a variety of music videos for artists such as Taylor Swift\, The Band Perry\, The Delta Saints\, as well as TV commercials and web content for GoDaddy and Google. His most recent project includes a one-hour TV special titled Outnumbered Hunger\, which is fronted by Reba McEntire to raise awareness about the hunger issues facing the United States. \nLaura Jean Hocking is a Memphis filmmaker best known for producing Indie Memphis award winners Antenna and Automusik Can Do No Wrong\, as well the popular feature\, Eat\, with her husband C. Scott McCoy and Oddly Buoyant Productions. She is currently editing and associate producing Bad\, Bad Men for Old School Pictures. \nRyan Watt is a media producer and marketing consultant\, as well as Director of Development at New School Media\, Inc. He has produced numerous independent feature films plus shorts\, music and web videos. His feature productions include Pilgrim Song\, Forty Years From Yesterday\, Open Five\, The Romance of Loneliness and Daylight Fades. DESCRIPTION:An open call exhibition organized by Crosstown Arts and the Cleveland Street Flea Market \nA flea market is filled with unique objects invoking curiosity\, nostalgia\, humor and surprise. A blue and white Pyrex bowl recalls helping Grandma mix stuffing for holidays past. A cut-crystal candy dish reminds us just how much we love that old-world pink color. A darkly framed formula-landscape evokes dreams of scary monsters. A planet-shaped radio\, reflecting design aspects of the early Star Wars days\, reminds us of the exact one we had as a kid\, except in yellow. Jamie is also the owner of Turnrow Book Co.\, in Greenwood\, MS\, so please help us celebrate this writer who daily champions other writers in his work as an independent bookseller.With elements of rural noir\, dark comedy and domestic dysfunction\, SOIL – published by Simon & Schuster – is a modern tragedy that pays homage to Mississippi’s great literary tradition — from William Faulkner to Larry Brown and Barry Hannah — and adds a manic dose of Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment for good measure. \nDistrustful of modern society\, environmental scientist Jay Mize moves his family off the grid to a stretch of riverbottom farmland in the Mississippi hills\, where he hopes to position himself at the forefront of a revolution in agriculture. After suffering drought\, flood\, pestilence and family turmoil\, Jay uncovers a dead body in his water-logged field. Alan Lightman’s grandfather M.A. Lightman was the family’s undisputed patriarch: it was his movie theater empire that catapulted the Lightmans to prominence in the South\, his fearless success that both galvanized and paralyzed his children and grandchildren. In this moving\, impressionistic memoir\, the author chronicles his return to Memphis in an attempt to understand the origins he so eagerly left behind forty years earlier. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Crosstown Arts\, Booksellers at Laurelwood\, Church Health Center and Memphis Center for Food & Faith \nInternationally-acclaimed\, bestselling author Michael Pollan visited Memphis for a reading\, booksigning\, and dinner event on Tuesday\, May 20\, in conjunction with the paperback release of his most recent book\, Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation. \nPrior to the reading\, Chef Miles McMath and organizers hosted an outdoor barbecue featuring locally-sourced meat and produce\, with the food and cocktail menu based around the themes of the book.  Local acoustic duo Deering and Down as well as members of story booth’s spring music production workshop performed live. \nThis event was presented by Crosstown Arts in collaboration with The Booksellers at Laurelwood\, the Church Health Center\, and Memphis Center for Food & Faith\,  and benefited the new nonprofit local foods distributor\, Bring It Food Hub. Watkins\, Free admission \nIn partnership with VO2 Networx\, the University of Memphis Department of Art\, Memphis College of Art\, and Rhodes College Art Department\, Crosstown Arts is pleased to welcome internationally-recognized installation and social practice artist Theaster Gates for a public lecture and panel discussion at Sears Crosstown on the evening of Saturday\, November 16. \nHis presentation\, “A Way of Working\,” will introduce and explore his artistic practice and ways of working with various systems\, including university\, philanthropic\, government\, studio and museum structures\, to create new models for creative engagement and redevelopment. \nThe historic Sears Crosstown building is in its last few months as an abandoned structure\, as the Crosstown Development Project will begin construction in early 2014.  Gates’ lecture and panel discussion will highlight this monumental moment of remaking place and space. \nFollowing the lecture\, a panel discussion will be held with Gates and members of the Crosstown Development Project’s design team. Born in Scooba\, Mississippi and raised in Memphis\, he attended the University of Memphis earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Music History with an emphasis on Ethnomusicology.  He was trained to play western classical and jazz on tuba; but his fascination with world cultures and music has led him to play innumerable instruments. He has been afforded the opportunity to perform throughout the United States and Europe as well as sharing the stage with The Meters\, Galactic\, Robert Randolph\, Paul Winter\, William Eaton\, Rufus Thomas\, and Clyde Stubblefield to name a few. Sean has released four solo albums\, and currently splits his time between performing and recording as a solo artist (often accompanying yoga classes taught by his artist wife\, Anne J. Froning) as well as with his group the Mighty Souls Brass Band.  He also builds musical instruments for outdoor classrooms through his business Being:Art.

MemFeast is Memphis’ local version founded and facilitated by Crosstown Arts\, helping to rethink how the arts are financed and experienced communally. \nThe mission of MemFeast is to support a diverse cross section of contemporary artistic and social practices\, and to provide local artists with new opportunities to produce work that engages the community. Unlike many conventional grant programs\, MemFeast brings people together for a communal dinner and conversation centered on creativity and innovation\, where artists receive funding immediately and are enabled to make timely work. \nAt each MemFeast\, anyone from the community can buy a ticket for a locally sourced dinner\, along with drinks and a ballot to vote on the night’s presentations. During the meal\, a selected group of local artists make presentations of their proposed projects. At the end of the night\, the audience votes for their favorite idea and the project with the most votes is awarded $5\,000 (from the ticket sales and other sponsorships) to produce the work. \nCrosstown Arts will present the fourth MemFeast in collaboration with the V&E Greenline Committee and Vollintine Evergreen Community Association (VECA).  Local artists\, designers\, and community members are invited to submit proposals for site-specific public art projects along the V&E Greenline\, a 1.8 mile “linear park” and first “rails-to-trails” project in Memphis.  The trail stretches between the Sears building at N. SUMMARY:Tales of Modern Rocketry Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of nine weeks in the fall of 2012\, the sixth-grade “Rocket Writers” of the new Gordon Science & Arts Academy met for a workshop with Nat Akin\, our director of outreach & education\, to compose creative work for the first book-length project of our new after-school arts program\, story booth.Tales of Modern Rocketry is the collection of science fiction stories dreamed up by these young writers\, each accompanied by an original illustration from artist Derrick Dent\, and introduced with a foreword by former NASA astronaut Dr. Rhea Seddon\, one of the first women selected for the Space Shuttle program. \nOn Thursday\, February 7\, Crosstown Arts celebrated this book release at a launch party with the families\, friends\, and faculty of Gordon Science & Arts Academy in our new performance and exhibition space at 430 N. Cleveland. After mingling over music and food\, the writers read excerpts from their stories to public applause. Then the book was officially unveiled to the student writers and the gathered audience\, and the young writers were on hand to sign copies of the book. \nThis book and event serve as the first public “picture” of the kind of collaborative\, creative work story booth intends to do with middle- and high-school students in the greater Crosstown community. DESCRIPTION:March 1-3\, 2012 at the Powerhouse \n\n                 \n\n\n    \nCrosstown Arts organized New York-based multimedia artist Rashaad Newsome’s first exhibition in Memphis\, a video installation\, Swag\, from 2011\, at the Powerhouse from March 1 – 3\, 2012. The artist has recently exhibited at PS1 MoMA\, the Whitney Biennial and the Venice Biennale. \nThe installation was a component of Our Vibe. Our City. at the Powerhouse presented by ArtsMemphis at Live From Memphis’ Music Video Showcase 7. It was the first in Crosstown Arts’ Visiting Artist Series\, sponsored by VO2 Networx\, bringing internationally recognized artists to Memphis to exhibit work and engage with the community. \nRashaad Newsome was born in New Orleans in 1979 and currently lives and works in New York. His work was recently exhibited at the Pompidou Center\, Paris\, the 2011 Venice Biennale\, the 2010 Whitney Biennial at The Whitney Museum of American Art\, Greater New York 2010 at MoMA PS1 and Dance/Draw at the ICA Boston. Forthcoming projects and performances include Shade Compositions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in April 2012 and SEVEN.

DESCRIPTION:Winning Project: Memfeast 2 \nFrom the Commercial Appeal: \nCrosstown canvas comes alive with color\nFrom Staff Reports\nTuesday\, September 20\, 2011 \n\nA large crowd on Friday night witnessed the artful lighting of the main body of the old Sears Crosstown building. \nScores of cars pulled into the parking lot on Cleveland near North Parkway for a different kind of tailgating event. \nNearly 300 windows form a large grid on the south side of the vacant building. About 40 windows in the middle were used by artist Robin Salant as a canvas for her colorful\, moving light\, all to the delight of onlookers. \nNext\, eyes will turn to the art deco tower at the front of the 1.4 million-square-foot building. \nSalant will light its windows with moving color starting at 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 22. \nShe won a Crosstown Arts commission in a MemFEAST event to create art that brings attention to the planned redevelopment of the long-vacant building. \nFlipping the switch on the tower lights will be part of another event at Cleveland at North Parkway on Oct. 22.
