DESCRIPTION:430 N. Cleveland\nSecond Tuesday of Each Month\nArtist Setup: 5 – 6 pm / Critique & Discussion: 6 – 8 pm \nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series\, organized in partnership with ArtsMemphis\, is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. The series will take place at Crosstown Arts exhibition space at 430 N. Cleveland. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Poland\, 15 minutes.\nA creative image of an underwater search in the dimensions of two worlds—ice desert and under water— told from the point of view of the rescue team\, of the diver\, and of the ordinary people waiting on the shore. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDirector Bios\nSMILF: SMILF is Frankie Shaw’s first short film\, which she wrote\, directed and starred in. She is currently developing a TV show from the story. Shaw graduated from Barnard College of Columbia University with a degree in literature\, then moved to Los Angeles where she currently lives. Shaw first received recognition acting in the completely improvised Sundance film The Freebie and then as the oddball drunken cheerleader in the sitcom Blue Mountain State. \nOBJECT: Paulina Skibińska\, born in 1987 in Kowary\, near Jelenia Góra\, Poland\, graduated from the Post-Secondary Studio of Culture Animation in Wrocław in 2009. She earned her M.A. degree in screenwriting at the Łódź Film School (2014)\, where she is now pursuing her Ph.D. studies. OBJECT isher first film as director. Being a screenwriter of numerous internationally awarded short fiction and animated films\, including http://\, The Kiss and 48hTV\, Paulina is presently at work on her full-length fiction debut film. \nSTORM HITS JACKET: Born in Brest in 1985\, Paul Cabon is a French director and animator. After a course in applied arts at Estienne (Paris)\, he attended ESAAT in Roubaix where he graduated in animation. Between 2007 and 2009 he studied at La Poudrière in Valence\, where he directed Sauvage\, which won the special student film prize in the Annecy festival in 2010. He has worked as an animator\, scriptwriter and background artist and character designer for the series Michel at Folimage and as an illustrator in various fanzines. \nOH LUCY!: Atsuko Hirayanagi was born in Nagano and raised in Chiba\, Japan. She is a recent graduate of NYU Tisch School of The Arts\, Asia with an MFA in Film Production\, where she received the Cathay Scholarship from Singapore’s Cathay Organization. Her short films have played at numerous film festivals\, including Clermont-Ferrand and Tokyo Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia\, where her MFA 2nd year project\, Mō Ikkai\, won the Grand Prix as well as the Japan Competition Best Short (Governor of Tokyo Award) and the Audience awards. Atsuko is currently developing a feature script of Oh Lucy! \nTHE FACE OF UKRAINE: CASTING OKSANA BAIUL: Kitty Green is an award-winning Australian filmmaker. In 2012\, Kitty moved to her grandmother’s native Ukraine to shoot with the protest movement ‘Femen’. Her abduction by the KGB made headlines internationally. Her feature documentary\, Ukraine Is Not A Brothel screened at the Venice Film Festival\, SXSW\, Hot Docs and over fifty festivals internationally. After Sundance\, The Face of Ukraine: Casting Oksana Baiul made its European premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. \nWORLD OF TOMORROW: Don Hertzfeldt is an Academy-Award nominated American animator and independent filmmaker. He is the creator of many animated films\, including It’s Such a Beautiful Day\, The Meaning of Life\, and Rejected\, and recently created a “couch gag” opening for The Simpsons. His films have received over 200 awards and have been presented around the world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Sundance Film Festival Shorts Program\nThe Sundance Film Festival has introduced global audiences to some of the most groundbreaking films of the past three decades\, including Whiplash\,Boyhood\, Rich Hill\, Beasts of the Southern Wild\, Fruitvale Station\, Little Miss Sunshine\, sex\, lies\, and videotape\, Reservoir Dogs\, Hedwig and the Angry Inch\, An Inconvenient Truth\, Precious and Napoleon Dynamite. Each year the Festival receives more than 8\,000 short film submissions\, selecting 60-80 to show. The Festival programs a 90-minute collection of shorts from its most recent Festival to go on a theatrical tour to independent art houses in more than 50 cities nationwide. It is one of very few theatrical releases of short films in America. \nFueled by artistic expression and limited only by their runtime\, short films transcend traditional storytelling. They are a significant and popular way artists can connect with audiences. From documentary to animation\, narrative to experimental\, the abbreviated form is no longer just for the novice. Shorts have and will continue to be an important part of cinema\, storytelling\, and culture. The Festival has always treated short films with the highest regard and gives a home to new (and old) projects for audiences to discover and celebrate. \nThe Festival’s Short Film Program has long been established as a place to discover talented directors\, such as past alums Wes Anderson\, Todd Haynes\, Nicole Holofcener\, Spike Jonze\, Paul Thomas Anderson\, Lynne Ramsay\, David O. DESCRIPTION:Tamale Fest 2015 is the first annual fundraising event for Centro Cultural Latino de Memphis. The festival will have main stage live entertainment\, a tamale team cooking contest\, a tamale tasting tent\, a kids’ activity corner\, art vendors\, food trucks and a photo booth. \nThe purpose of the Tamale Fest is to share and celebrate Latino culture\, bring people together for a positive cultural experience and to raise money to allow Centro Cultural to expand their programs and administration. \nCentro Cultural was founded in 2011 and has been operating as a 100% volunteer-run organization. Accomplishments to date include over 60 cultural workshops taught\, 13 showcases celebrated\, 6 art exhibits produced\, collaboration with Dixon Gallery and Gardens produced the first contemporary Latino Art exhibition in Memphis\, current development of a book based on immigrant stories in Binghamton and over 5000 hours of volunteer time given. \n    \n \n  \n                 \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:430 N. Cleveland\nSecond Tuesday of Each Month\nArtist Setup: 5 – 6 pm / Critique & Discussion: 6 – 8 pm \nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series\, organized in partnership with ArtsMemphis\, is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. The series will take place at Crosstown Arts exhibition space at 430 N. Cleveland. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \n\nTo participate\, artists can send the following info via email to Brittney Bullock (brittney@ crosstownarts.org) with the subject line “Open Crit.” Submissions will be accepted and scheduled based on availability. SUMMARY:Community Mural Talk with Guisela Latorre
DESCRIPTION:Presented by UrbanArt Commission and Crosstown Arts in partnership with Caritas Village\, Hope Gallery & Centro Cultural: \nJoin us for a presentation on muralism in international contexts with visiting scholar Guisela Latorre from the University of Ohio Department of Art/Department of Gender Studies. Her talk will explore her research around Chicana/o murals in California and muralism and graffiti in post-dictatorship Chile. \nGuisela Latorre specializes in modern and contemporary U.S. Latina/o and Latin American art with a special emphasis on gender and women artists. Her first book titled Walls of Empowerment: Chicana/o Indigenist Murals from California (U. of Texas Press 2008)\, explored the recurrence of indigenist motifs in Chicana/o community murals from the 1970s to the turn of the millennium. Her other publications include “Border Consciousness and Artivist Aesthetics: Richard Lou’s Performance and Multimedia Artwork” in the American Studies Journal (2012)\, “New Approaches to Chicana/o Art: The Visual and the Political as Cognitive Process” in Image & Narrative (2010)\, and “Icons of Love and Devotion: Alma López’s Art” in Feminist Studies (Spring/Summer 2008). Latorre’s recent research activities include the co-editorship of the feminist journal Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies and work on a second book project of the graffiti and mural movement in Chile during the post-dictatorship era. She teaches classes on Latina/Chicana feminism\, visual culture and Latina/o art.

DESCRIPTION:Supported by the First Tennessee Foundation/ArtsFirst and ArtsMemphis\nCrosstown Arts is pleased to partner with Centro Cultural Latino de Memphis for a series of exhibitions and events to showcase the work of Latino artists living and working in Memphis and to celebrate elements and traditions of Latino culture as an integral part of the creative community of Memphis. This partnership is made possible by a generous grant from the First Tennessee Foundation\, ArtsFirst and ArtsMemphis. The partnership builds on the substantial work that Centro Cultural Latino de Memphis has accomplished and furthers Crosstown Arts’ ongoing mission to help combine audiences\, further expand inclusivity and provide opportunities to all of Memphis’ creative community. \nTwo large-scale partnership events were Stories on My Back on view at Crosstown Arts during the month of June 2015\, and the Tamale Fest at Caritas Village\, held on June 28\, 2015. Created by bi-cultural Memphis artist Richard Lou\, Stories On My Back is a multi-media installation that incorporates audio\, video\, digital photographs\, thousands of tamale leaves. This work has never been installed or seen in its entirety in Memphis. Later that month\, Crosstown Arts was an integral partner with Centro Cultural and Caritas Village for the Tamale Fest\, the first annual fundraising event for Centro Cultural. Presenters for this installment: Miles Tamboli\, Wes Riddle\, Ben McLean\, Noah Campbell\, Margarita Sandino\, Onie Johns\, Rachel Neely Williams & Edna Banks-Hawkins\nFree admission. \nTamale Fest\nSaturday\, June 27\, 2-6 pm\, Caritas Village\, 2509 Harvard Avenue in Binghampton\nOrganized by Centro Cultural\, Caritas Village and Crosstown Arts\nTamale Fest 2015 is the first annual fundraising event for Centro Cultural. The festival will have main stage live entertainment\, a tamale team cooking contest\, a tamale tasting tent\, a kids’ activity corner\, art vendors\, food trucks and a photo booth. Centro Cultural was founded in 2011 and has been operating as a 100% volunteer-run organization. Accomplishments to date include over 60 cultural workshops taught\, 13 showcases celebrated\, 6 art exhibits produced\, collaboration with Dixon Gallery and Gardens produced the first contemporary Latino Art exhibition in Memphis\, current development of a book based on immigrant stories in Binghamton and over 5000 hours of volunteer time given. DESCRIPTION:30 Americans presents a sweeping survey of artwork by many of the most influential African American artists of the last four decades. Organized by the Rubell Family Collection\, Miami\, the exhibition features work by such early and influential artists as Barkley L. Cleveland\nSecond Tuesday of Each Month\nArtist Setup: 5 – 6 pm / Critique & Discussion: 6 – 8 pm \nMay Artists: Jim Anderson\, Elisabeth Eickhoff\, Dan Ross & Meghan Vaziri\nFacilitator: Laurel Sucsy \nCrosstown Arts’ Open Crit series\, organized in partnership with ArtsMemphis\, is a monthly critique event where visual artists are invited to bring new and/or in-progress studio work for critical feedback and group discussion particular to each artist’s practice. The series will take place at Crosstown Arts exhibition space at 430 N. Cleveland. \nA dedicated facilitator with experience in a group critique setting will guide discussion for each critique event\, which will include up to 4 artists’ work\, with 15-25 minutes devoted to the work of each. \nAll visual artists and anyone interested in joining the discussion are welcome to participate regardless of their level of expertise\, prior professional art experience or background/education in fine art. Participation is free and open to the public. Input during the critiques from everyone in attendance is welcomed and encouraged. \nNo formal preparation is necessary for participating artists\, who will have an opportunity to introduce and contextualize their work on view at the beginning of each critique. Participating artists are only asked to be open to (and interested in) considering reactions to their work by the group\, which will always be done in a supportive\, constructive and casual environment\, but could at the same time be challenging. \n\nTo participate\, artists can send the following info via email to Brittney Bullock (brittney@ crosstownarts.org) with the subject line “Open Crit.” Submissions will be accepted and scheduled based on availability. DESCRIPTION:  \nEXHIBITION SCHEDULE\nThursday\, April 30 – Saturday\, May 2 // 10am – 6pm\nSaturday\, May 2: Closing Reception // 6 – 8pm \n\n                 \n\n\n    \n“When I tell people I create\, they think I’m a musician.”- Michael Williams \nCrosstown Arts is pleased to present an exhibition of over 50 paintings by Crosstown residents Michael Williams and his mother\, Mattie Williams. Although working in clearly distinct styles\, their process involves a delicate exchange: Mattie inspired Michael to paint\, and Michael names Mattie’s paintings. Both artists are self-taught and have been painting most of their lives. Michael is visually impaired\, so he uses tools like powerful magnifying glasses and bright lights to enhance his limited field of vision\, seeking to capture realistic perspectives in his landscapes. Mattie uses acrylic paint to create abstract works with bold colors and repeated patterns\, often floral or geometric forms. Together\, their works demonstrate how the act of creating can strengthen the ties that bind people to one another — through family\, through paint. \nMichael was born with an eye disorder known as Stargardt’s Disease and recently founded a non-profit organization\, International Association for Sight Impaired Artists. The organization’s mission is to educate\, empower and support individuals who are blind or visually impaired to be involved in the visual\, performing and literary arts. Michael hopes to inspire others with sight impairments not to limit themselves creatively. \nHe has won many awards in several art competitions\, including Memphis Technical High School “Outstanding Art Student” Award in the 1980s\, St. Joseph Hospital Pen and Ink Art Competition\, Southland Mall Scholastic Art Competition\, Mid South Fair Pen and Ink Art Competition\, and the American Printing House for the Blind International Art Competition in 2009\, 2010\, 2012 and 2014.
