DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exhibition of new work by Scott Carter. The artist’s intent is that this body of work reflects a fragile intertwining of music\, performance\, and sculpture while reflecting both digital and intuitive methods of problem solving in the studio. \nAbout the exhibition:\nThis exhibition emphasizes a relationship between disparate voices. As a metaphor\, these\nvoices represent contrasting and divergent forms of the artist’s creative practice. Carter’s\ninterest in music\, performance and sculpture oscillates between utter failure\, disinterest and frustration to moments where both practices seemingly make sense existing in the same place\, both physically and metaphorically. This body of work represents the struggle to produce in both creative fields. \nDuring his recent residency at Crosstown Arts\, Carter was allowed the freedom and space to work intuitively and pursue both of these creative endeavors with the assistance of digital tools and advanced fabrication equipment. The artist’s intent is that this body of work reflects a fragile intertwining of music\, performance and sculpture while reflecting both digital and intuitive methods of problem solving in the studio. \n\nArtist statement:\nThe connections between humans and the built environment interest me\, serving as the\nprimary source material for my work. I formulate thoughtful assessments of my environment\, exploring connections between art\, design and sound. \nThe physical development of my work is related to a tactile sense for materials. Through\nthe process of examining materials and their function\, I am interested in bestowing new\nvalue and subverting function. My practice often involves a re-purposing of materials ranging from drywall\, carpet\, and fluorescent lights to used guitars\, drum sets\, and\nelectronic components. Metaphorically\, these material transitions allow me to explore my\ninterests in the way we experience culture\, objects and physical environments. \n\nAbout the artist:\nSCOTT CARTER (b. 1984\, United States) is a Wisconsin-based artist\, whose work is influenced by the experience of living amongst mass-produced materials\, spaces and objects that are inherent in contemporary architecture and design. His work manifests as immersive installations and interactive objects that facilitate subtle shifts in value and attempt to redefine utility in relation to everyday experiences. His practice parallels contemporary discourse in art\, design\, architecture\, and sound. \nScott received his MFA in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in\n2011\, where he was the first recipient of the Eldon Danhausen Fellowship for Sculpture.\nHe has attended funded residencies at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson\, Vermont and the Ox Bow School of Art in Saugatuck\, Michigan. In addition he is a recipient of the Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship for Midwestern artists (2013) and a first place recipient of the Beers Contemporary Emerging Artist Award in Sculpture (2013) \nSelected solo shows include include Velocity – Linda Warren Projects\, Chicago\, Il (2017); The Nature of Being – Pinnacle Gallery\, Savannah\, Ga (2015); The Shape of Things – Beers Contemporary\, London (2014); Disonar – Evanston Art Center\, Evanston\, Il (2013) and Force Majeure – Linda Warren Projects\, Chicago\, Il (2012); Recent group exhibitions include as site specific installation for In Situ and Linda Warren Projects at Expo Chicago (2014)\, Building Stories – Kohler Arts Center\, Sheboygan WI (2014) and I am What I am Doing – La Esquina Gallery\, Kansas City\, MO (2014). \nIn addition\, he was a visiting artist as part of DeFINE Art 2015 at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah Georgia and recently completed a three month residency as part of the Kohler Arts/Industry program in Kohler\, Wisconsin.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception — Wang Chen: The Sin Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opening reception of new work by artist Wang Chen. Chen’s work will be on view in the Screening Room at Crosstown Arts and projected onto walls in the East Atrium. On view through October 20. \nWang Chen is a multimedia artist whose work incorporates installation\, performance\, drawing and animation to create digital videos that depict fantasy worlds with humanoid characters\, whom she uses to examine gender\, sexuality\, and politics. By layering different mediums into one digital composition\, Chen creates an overwhelming fantasy world of multiple\, moveable layers and elements that together become unstoppable and continuously transforming as a way of considering the possibilities of imagined worlds. \nIn her videos\, hand-sewn costumes fuse the human body into the virtual space where humanness blends in\, dissolves\, and potentially succumbs to the digital fantasy. As the costumed performer\, Chen herself becomes a physical component of the worlds she creates\, becoming multiple. These clones represent variously unstable identities:  undefined genders\, cartoonish humanoids\, ghostlike apparitions and thus can adopt multiple identities\, abstracting her own role as the artist-architect to become many things at once. \nChen’s playground of electric city-space\, neon landscapes\, and nightmarish amusement parks becomes itself a representation\, if not a fun-house mirror\, of our own reality.  The juxtaposition and melting of these dark yet fantastical scenes act as a playful reflection of Chen’s complicated response and rejection of societal norms while constructing a new vision of gender and sexuality in our world. \nThis work may not be appropriate for younger audiences. \nAbout Wang Chen:\nWang Chen was born in China and is a multimedia artist currently living and working in NYC. The installations that Chen creates begin with physical drawings. Chen makes costumes and props for her videos and builds unimaginable spaces using virtual reality. Chen received her BFA in Painting from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA in Photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Her work has been exhibited/screened internationally in China\, UK\, US\, Sweden\, Venezuela\, and Greece. Chen has participated in several residencies including The Studios at MASS MoCA and the NYFA Immigrant Mentoring Program. She is the fellowship recipient of Roswell Artist in Residency\, Vermont Studio Center and Nars Foundation.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception — Jia Wang: Residual Imprint
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an opening reception of new work by Jia Wang. On view through Oct. 20. \nJia’s work explores the traumatic memories that are prevalent in a family. Examining and displaying how trauma is revealed through complex family relationships and how it alters an individual and a family’s identity when visualized. Her work addresses both a personal and cultural perspectives\, through site-specific installation comprised of video\, collage\, and photographic images. \nIn Jia’s work\, she exploring domestic violence and sharing her visual inquiry into trauma through personal storytelling. These stories are both past’s future and future’s past\, physically and psychologically speaking. In traditional Chinese culture\, the family is the most basic unit and many aspects of Chinese life can be tied to honoring one’s parents or ancestors. Family practices\, such as interactions between family members and disciplinary actions\, are passed down from one generation to another. Family is the most intimate relationship but also the most confusing as love and hostility can be difficult to separate. \nAbout Jia Wang:\nJia Wang was born in Lanzhou\, Gansu Provence\, China. She holds a BFA in Photography from the Beijing Film Academy\, Beijing\, China and an MFA in Imaging Arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology\, Rochester\, NY. Jia has exhibited internationally including in the Three Shadows Photography Art Center\, Beijing\, China\, the Yeiser Art Center\, Pauducah\, KY\, and the PH21 Gallery in Budapest\, Hungary. Her art work has published in Art Maze Mag\, UK\, ArtAscent Magazine\, USA\, and the PhotoWorld magazine\, China. Residences include the Chanorth Residency Program and the Crosstown Arts Residency Program. In Fall 2019\, Jia will participate in the Bronx Museum’s AIM (Artist in the Marketplace) Program. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us on July 28 from 1-3 pm to celebrate the STITCHED exhibitions at Crosstown Arts. This will be the last time you’ll be able to see the shows. We’re going to announce the viewer’s choice awards\, debut the community quilt made during Maria Shell’s workshop in June\, and acknowledge all of the artists and volunteers who made these shows a reality. \nAnnouncement of the Viewer’s Choice awards will be at 2pm. We will be asking artists to take their quilts down during the celebration. Artists are encouraged to take pictures of your quilt and post them on the Stitched2019 Facebook page as a remembrance of the events. If you will be picking up a quilt for another person you will need to have written permission from that person. \nBLUE show posters will be available at the event. \nIf you have a quilt in the show and are unable to attend the event\, your quilt will be available for pick up from July 29-August 2 from 12-4pm\, Tuesday through Friday at Crosstown Arts. Note that the galleries are closed on Monday.

DESCRIPTION:Recent works by Lester Merriweather \nOpening: Friday\, Feb. 15\, 6-8 pm\nOn view: February 15-March 10 \nArtist bio:\nLester Julian Merriweather (b.1978) is a Memphis-based visual artist. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. He holds an MFA from Memphis College of Art and a BA from Jackson State University. \nMerriweather has exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. at various venues such as the Studio Museum in Harlem\, NYC\, Diverseworks in Houston\, the Contemporary in Atlanta\, and Stella Jones Gallery in New Orleans. He has also exhibited abroad at the Zacheta National Gallery in Warsaw\, Poland. He has exhibited locally at Powerhouse Memphis\, The Brooks Museum of Art\, The Dixon Gallery\, Crosstown Arts and The CMPLX. \nMerriweather served as the Curatorial Director at the University of Memphis for the Jones Gallery and the Martha & Robert Fogelman Galleries of Contemporary Art for six years. He served on the Board of Directors for Number\, Inc. Independent Journal for the Arts where he created the Art of the South Series. He participated in the Collabortory Memphis project. He was also a founding member of the ArtsMemphis Artist Advisory Council and the artsAccelerator Grant Panel Program. Complex Magazine named him one of Fifteen Young Black Artists Making Waves in the Artworld. \nHe currently serves as the Curatorial Consultant for The PPF Art Collection. He is on advisory panels for the CLTV and LocateArts. Merriweather serves as Principal of LJM Studio Memphis.

DESCRIPTION:Seed Space + Delta Axis present: Kenturah Davis + Desmond Lewis\n\n\nMemphis artist Desmond Lewis and Kenturah Davis (an artist working between Los Angeles\, New Haven\, and Accra\, Ghana) were selected by Delta Axis and Locate Arts/Seed Space to exhibit their work together based on their innovative sensitivity to material\, their exploration of social and relational content\, and the critical acclaim associated with their work. \nOpening: Friday\, Feb. 15\, 6-8 pm\nOn view: February 15-March 10\nPanel discussion: Saturday\, Feb. 16\, 2 pm \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the show:\n\nDelta Axis and Locate Arts/ Seed Space share a mission to promote contemporary art in Memphis and to connect Memphis to the national arts network. After years of dialogue\, a collaboration between the two organizations is emerging in the form of this exhibition. It features an artist practicing in Memphis (Desmond Lewis) and an artist practicing outside of Tennessee (Kenturah Davis). The two artists were selected to exhibit their work together based on their innovative sensitivity to material\, their exploration of social and relational content\, and the critical acclaim associated with their work. \nThis two-person show is one in a series of statewide exhibitions\, organized by Locate Arts\, that features Tennessee artists and artists from out of state\, and partners with a local organization. These exhibitions are leading up to a major statewide event: The TN Triennial\, which will be the largest contemporary art exhibition ever to occur in Tennessee. Its impact will be significant\, both economically and socially\, with an enduring effect\, especially on our visual arts community. The TN Triennial will be a celebration of the experience of contemporary art in Tennessee\, and will include works by renowned artists from inside and outside of the state. The curator has been selected\, important venues are signed up and the dates are set. More information will be released this spring. \nAbout the artists:\nKenturah Davis is an artist working between Los Angeles\, New Haven\, and Accra (Ghana). Her work oscillates between various facets of portraiture and design. Using text as a point of departure\, she explores the fundamental role that language has in shaping how we understand ourselves and the world around us. This manifests in a variety of forms including drawings\, sculpture\, and performances. Davis was commissioned by LA Metro to create large-scale\, site-specific work that will be permanently installed on the new Crenshaw/LAX rail line\, opening fall 2019. Her work has been included in institutional exhibitions in Africa\, Asia\, Australia and Europe. Davis earned her BA from Occidental College and MFA Yale University School of Art. \nDesmond Lewis is a sculptor who was born and raised in Nashville\, TN. Lewis received his AA from Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington\, MA in 2012\, BS from Tennessee State University in Nashville\, TN in 2014\, and MFA from The University of Memphis in 2017. Selected group exhibitions include Current Collapse at Ruddell Gallery in 2017 in Spearfish\, SD\, Price is Right at David Lusk Gallery in 2017 in Memphis\, TN\, Equality Matters at Mildred Cox Gallery in 2017 in Fulton\, MO\, and The Collective Presents: Liberation at the Clough-Hanson Gallery at Rhodes College in 2018 in Memphis\, TN. Public and private collections include the Penland School of Crafts\, Carolina Bronze Sculpture Park\, City of Lenoir\, NC\, City of Hickory\, NC\, Vermont Carving and Sculpture Center\, The University of Memphis\, Soulsville USA\, NexAir LLC\, Skowhegan Parks and Recreation\, and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. In 2017\, He was named one of the 100 Interesting and Influential People of Memphis. Residencies include the Pittsburgh Glass Center (2018)\, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2018)\, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (2017)\, and the Vermont Carving and Sculpture Center (2016). Desmond is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville\, TN. DESCRIPTION:Recent works by Lester Merriweather \nOpening: Friday\, Feb. 15\, 6-8 pm\nOn view: February 15-March 10 \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nArtist bio:\nLester Julian Merriweather (b.1978) is a Memphis-based visual artist. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. He holds an MFA from Memphis College of Art and a BA from Jackson State University. \nMerriweather has exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. at various venues such as the Studio Museum in Harlem\, NYC\, Diverseworks in Houston\, the Contemporary in Atlanta\, and Stella Jones Gallery in New Orleans. He has also exhibited abroad at the Zacheta National Gallery in Warsaw\, Poland. He has exhibited locally at Powerhouse Memphis\, The Brooks Museum of Art\, The Dixon Gallery\, Crosstown Arts and The CMPLX. \nMerriweather served as the Curatorial Director at the University of Memphis for the Jones Gallery and the Martha & Robert Fogelman Galleries of Contemporary Art for six years. He served on the Board of Directors for Number\, Inc. Independent Journal for the Arts where he created the Art of the South Series. He participated in the Collabortory Memphis project. He was also a founding member of the ArtsMemphis Artist Advisory Council and the artsAccelerator Grant Panel Program. Complex Magazine named him one of Fifteen Young Black Artists Making Waves in the Artworld. \nHe currently serves as the Curatorial Consultant for The PPF Art Collection. He is on advisory panels for the CLTV and LocateArts. DESCRIPTION:Seed Space + Delta Axis present: Kenturah Davis + Desmond Lewis\n\n\nMemphis artist Desmond Lewis and Kenturah Davis (an artist working between Los Angeles\, New Haven\, and Accra\, Ghana) were selected by Delta Axis and Locate Arts/Seed Space to exhibit their work together based on their innovative sensitivity to material\, their exploration of social and relational content\, and the critical acclaim associated with their work. \nOpening: Friday\, Feb. 15\, 6-8 pm\nOn view: February 15-March 10\nPanel discussion: Saturday\, Feb. 16\, 2 pm \n\n                 \n\n\n    \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the show:\n\nDelta Axis and Locate Arts/ Seed Space share a mission to promote contemporary art in Memphis and to connect Memphis to the national arts network. After years of dialogue\, a collaboration between the two organizations is emerging in the form of this exhibition. It features an artist practicing in Memphis (Desmond Lewis) and an artist practicing outside of Tennessee (Kenturah Davis). The two artists were selected to exhibit their work together based on their innovative sensitivity to material\, their exploration of social and relational content\, and the critical acclaim associated with their work. \nThis two-person show is one in a series of statewide exhibitions\, organized by Locate Arts\, that features Tennessee artists and artists from out of state\, and partners with a local organization. These exhibitions are leading up to a major statewide event: The TN Triennial\, which will be the largest contemporary art exhibition ever to occur in Tennessee. Its impact will be significant\, both economically and socially\, with an enduring effect\, especially on our visual arts community. The TN Triennial will be a celebration of the experience of contemporary art in Tennessee\, and will include works by renowned artists from inside and outside of the state. The curator has been selected\, important venues are signed up and the dates are set. More information will be released this spring. \nAbout the artists:\nKenturah Davis is an artist working between Los Angeles\, New Haven\, and Accra (Ghana). Her work oscillates between various facets of portraiture and design. Using text as a point of departure\, she explores the fundamental role that language has in shaping how we understand ourselves and the world around us. This manifests in a variety of forms including drawings\, sculpture\, and performances. Davis was commissioned by LA Metro to create large-scale\, site-specific work that will be permanently installed on the new Crenshaw/LAX rail line\, opening fall 2019. Her work has been included in institutional exhibitions in Africa\, Asia\, Australia and Europe. Davis earned her BA from Occidental College and MFA Yale University School of Art. \nDesmond Lewis is a sculptor who was born and raised in Nashville\, TN. Lewis received his AA from Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington\, MA in 2012\, BS from Tennessee State University in Nashville\, TN in 2014\, and MFA from The University of Memphis in 2017. Selected group exhibitions include Current Collapse at Ruddell Gallery in 2017 in Spearfish\, SD\, Price is Right at David Lusk Gallery in 2017 in Memphis\, TN\, Equality Matters at Mildred Cox Gallery in 2017 in Fulton\, MO\, and The Collective Presents: Liberation at the Clough-Hanson Gallery at Rhodes College in 2018 in Memphis\, TN. Public and private collections include the Penland School of Crafts\, Carolina Bronze Sculpture Park\, City of Lenoir\, NC\, City of Hickory\, NC\, Vermont Carving and Sculpture Center\, The University of Memphis\, Soulsville USA\, NexAir LLC\, Skowhegan Parks and Recreation\, and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. In 2017\, He was named one of the 100 Interesting and Influential People of Memphis. Residencies include the Pittsburgh Glass Center (2018)\, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2018)\, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (2017)\, and the Vermont Carving and Sculpture Center (2016). Desmond is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville\, TN. His studio is based in Memphis\, TN. \n

SUMMARY:Brick Fiction Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Solo exhibition of work by Carrie Rubinstein \nOn view: December 14-January 27 \nArtist Statement:\nInfluenced by the abundant brick and plaster walls of the Crosstown Concourse building in which it was conceived\, Brick Fiction consists of two freestanding wooden structures that are covered in drawings that mimic those surfaces. The walls of Crosstown Concourse reveal layers of sandblasted paint\, plaster\, brick\, and concrete from the previous century. The beauty of this raw surface inspires my sensibilities as an artist because it sparks my curiosity about the prior occupants of this place. \nBoth structures stand at 10 x 9 x 8’ tall and contain full-size doors and two windows. The viewer is invited to experience the work from its interior and perimeter. One structure features hand-drawn individual bricks for its entire exterior. Even though each structure is nine feet tall\, the overlapping placement of each interior drawing of plaster walls produces an unexpected intimacy. Other objects made entirely from hand-drawn and folded sheet paper include a ceiling that resembles wooden planks\, an electrical outlet\, and a three-dimensional fuse box with bolts and wire housing. \nRubinstein is motivated by the dichotomy of building representational space out of non-traditional construction materials. This natural tension drives her practice and she continually seeks to give it structure. Brick Fiction celebrates the renewal of an old space and its objects complement the revitalized edifice from which they are inspired. \n\nBrick Fiction is inspired by the raw beauty found in the walls of Crosstown Concourse\nAside from the wooden framework\, the objects are all hollow constructed sheet paper.\nUsing paper to represent solid construction materials is a driving force for the artist.\n\n\nAbout the artist:\nCarrie Rubinstein is a Brooklyn-based artist who creates ink drawings\, paper sculptures\, and watercolor paintings. Gallery\, Orgy Park\, The Roger Smith Hotel\, and TSA Gallery. In 2010-11\, Rubinstein coordinated the tART art collective\, and in 2013 was a sculpture resident at the Vermont Studio Center. \nHer VSC experience generated early work for Retrofit\, a full-room installation made entirely from paper through drawings\, hollow constructed sculptures\, and castings. Brooklyn’s Rhombus Space presented Retrofit\, which was Rubinstein’s first NYC solo show\, and she was their August 2015 artist-in-residence. In June 2017\, Rubinstein created the paper installation\, Found Underground\, at Hunter College’s Thomas Hunter Project Space in Manhattan. In September 2017\, Retrofit traveled to the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph\, MI. This was Rubinstein’s first solo museum show. Rubinstein was honored to be a pilot artist in-residence at Crosstown Arts in Memphis for 2017-18.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception — Give a Damn! Music + Activism at Stax Records
DESCRIPTION:On view: September 28-December 2 \n“Give a Damn\,” a title taken from the 1970 Staple Singers song\, is the culmination of a year-long examination of Stax Records’ commitment to political activism\, community engagement\, and social justice in the years following Dr. King’s 1968 assassination in Memphis. \nThis exhibition is presented by The Stax Museum of American Soul Music and hosted at Crosstown Arts. It features never-before-seen artifacts including Isaac Hayes’ 14-foot long custom-made office desk\, stage clothing worn by Johnnie Taylor and Isaac Hayes\, rare photos and documents\, short films\, music\, and original artwork contributed by Shelby County students. \nDJ LeRoy (PRE$$URE WORLD) will be spinning deep soul hits from Stax Records and rarely heard tracks from other top Memphis studios.\n\n\nHistorical background:\nFor the musicians and staff of Stax Records\, the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. proved to be a catalyst for change. While never explicitly told to keep politics out of the studio\, most Stax artists kept their political preferences to themselves\, or simply chose not to engage. The death of Dr. King\, though\, literally put the struggle for freedom at the front door of Stax Records and made it difficult for those working within to ignore.  \nThe transformation began overnight\, with Stax artists Isaac Hayes and Rufus Thomas thrown into the role of peacekeepers during the unrest that followed Dr. King’s death. The era peaked at 1972’s Wattstax Festival\, where Stax gave an all-day concert for more than 112\,000 people in support of the community the wake of the Watts Rebellion\, and lasted until the studio’s doors closed in December 1975.  \nStax artists increased their participation in civic causes\, initiated relationships with politicians and activists\, adjusted their sound and look to align with both a growing counterculture and black consciousness movement\, and became community leaders\, empowered by their success and support from label owner\, Al Bell. Simply put\, Stax Records began to “give a damn.”

See their Facebook event page for more info.  \n\n\nArtist statement:\nMy intention is to provide the viewer a photograph that offers an experience of the landscape that does not rely solely on visual appearance.  An image of a different scope that conveys the material phenomena of a location\, a more tactile involvement with the landscape\, that attempts a solution to the distance conventional photography asserts. My interest is to bridge this gap between being immersed in a landscape and simply looking at it as a photograph.\n\nThese large-scale\, landscape cyanotypes represent an experience of the arid Southern California landscape.  They are made outdoors on the ground in the middle of the day in Griffith Park and Death Valley.  This is a rudimentary photography\, made without camera or film\, recording the moment\, the light\, and the terrain of a particular but negligible plot of ground in a vast space at high noon.  It is influenced by the landscape embodied in the 1840s cyanotype photograms of Anna Atkins\, and it responds to the grand vistas of photographers such as Ansel Adams by bringing vision back to the body and using what is within reach: rocks\, dirt\, open sky\, and sunlight. This series of photographs is an inquiry of place\, an expression of a phenomenological sensation\, and a proposition of sense.\n\nThe videos and photographs both are invested in observation\, the presence and action of light\, the parallels of light entering the shadowed interior of the camera and the eye functioning as an aperture to the blackness of the body’s interior.  That dependence of light on darkness interests me.  Video provides a physicality to the process of making images\, a physicality that links vision back to the body\, to movement and pulse\, rather than the mechanical idealized view of the camera.  Video is more performative and allows for an intuitive\, animated exploration of light.\n\n\n\nCurated by Terri Phillips and Brian Pera in collaboration with Crosstown Arts \nThe Wish Book series is a series focusing on non-traditional approaches to film as a medium.
