SUMMARY:Panel Discussion: Sexuality & Politics
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts staff will moderate a conversation with Mauricio Calvo and Sharolyn Peyton exploring how sexuality and sexual expression are linked to\, and affected by\, social and civic politics. \n\nFor the past 25 years\, Mauricio Calvo has chosen Memphis\, “the 901\,” as his home. Over the course of his career\, he has worked tirelessly to help ensure that the Memphis community has been heard. Through his leadership\, serving as the executive director of Latino Memphis for 11 years\, he has worked with diverse and underrepresented populations within and outside of the city. Using this platform\, he has fearlessly spoken out against acts of injustice\, both local and national\, to uplift the voices of those in need. \nHe is a proud graduate of CBU. Mauricio obtained a masters degree from Lipscomb University and completed graduate work at Boston College. He is also a graduate of Leadership Memphis\, New Memphis and Leadership Tennessee. \nMauricio is openly bi. He and his best friend\, local artist Yancy Villa-Calvo\, married 19 years ago. Together they are figuring out how to raise three future leaders: Anna 14\, Carolina 13 and Santiago 11\, all of whom proudly attend public schools. They all have to endure his cooking every night\, from his famous grilled tacos to his stir fry tofu. The Calvo-Villa’s are champions of progressive social issues\, and they love to enjoy all things Memphis as a family. \nWhen feeling down\, to boost his ego\, he recalls being named “Top 10 Young Professionals” by The Memphis Chamber (a while ago)\, “12 Who Made a Difference in 2012” by The Commercial Appeal and “Top 40 Under 40” by the Memphis Business Journal. In 2018\, he was named “Communicator of the Year” by the Memphis chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). In 2018 he received the “NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award” for Tennessee. In 2019 the Memphis Business Journal featured him as one of “100 Most Powerful People in Memphis business.” In commemoration of its 75th anniversary\, The Memphis Urban League will recognize Mauricio as a Diamond of HOPE” in the fall of 2019. \nWhen he is not working with his organization or spending quality time with his family\, Mauricio dedicates time to contributing to other parts of the Memphis community. He serves on various boards\, including the Downtown Memphis Commission\, Hope Credit Union\, Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau\, We Are Memphis\, Shelby Farms Park Conservancy\, and the National Leadership Council for LeBonheur Children’s Hospital among others. \nMost recently\, after 25 years\, Yancy and Mauricio became US citizens\, a privilege they know many are unable to obtain. As a citizen\, Mauricio will continue to use his voice\, and his vote\, to fight for others that are deserving of their own American dream. \n\nSharolyn Payton\, Professional Life\, Business\, and Community Coach\, is a champion for all things human development. Her mission is to help people identify\, cultivate\, and demonstrate their full human potential. Sharolyn attended Crichton College\, where she studied Christian Ministry and Belhaven University where she studied Applied Psychology.  She is the Lead Coach at Payton Place Coaching & Consulting. Her practice primarily serves nonprofit organizations\, minority and women business owners\, and visionary leaders. Sharolyn is known for her community-centered\, advocacy-based\, style of social entrepreneurship\, as well as her passion for social justice.  She has been recognized as a community influencer who encourages and promotes solution-focused\, inter-generational dialogue about social\, cultural\, political\, and economic challenges that exist in Memphis and in our Global community. Wherever there is “truth” that needs to be told or hard questions that need to be asked\, Sharolyn can usually be found in those places and spaces.

SUMMARY:Wang Chen: The Sin Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Screening Room at Crosstown Arts for a new exhibition of work by Wang Chen. Chen’s work will also be exhibited on the pop-out walls in the East Atrium. \nWang Chen is a multimedia artist whose work incorporates installation\, performance\, drawing and animation to create digital videos that depict fantasy worlds with humanoid characters\, whom she uses to examine gender\, sexuality\, and politics. By layering different mediums into one digital composition\, Chen creates an overwhelming fantasy world of multiple\, moveable layers and elements that together become unstoppable and continuously transforming as a way of considering the possibilities of imagined worlds. \nIn her videos\, hand-sewn costumes fuse the human body into the virtual space where humanness blends in\, dissolves\, and potentially succumbs to the digital fantasy. As the costumed performer\, Chen herself becomes a physical component of the worlds she creates\, becoming multiple. These clones represent variously unstable identities:  undefined genders\, cartoonish humanoids\, ghostlike apparitions and thus can adopt multiple identities\, abstracting her own role as the artist-architect to become many things at once. \nChen’s playground of electric city-space\, neon landscapes\, and nightmarish amusement parks becomes itself a representation\, if not a fun-house mirror\, of our own reality.  The juxtaposition and melting of these dark yet fantastical scenes act as a playful reflection of Chen’s complicated response and rejection of societal norms while constructing a new vision of gender and sexuality in our world. \nThis work may not be appropriate for younger audiences. \nAbout Wang Chen:\nWang Chen was born in China and is a multimedia artist currently living and working in NYC. The installations that Chen creates begin with physical drawings. Chen makes costumes and props for her videos and builds unimaginable spaces using virtual reality. Chen received her BFA in Painting from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MFA in Photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Chen has participated in several residencies including The Studios at MASS MoCA\, the NYFA Immigrant Mentoring Program\, and the Crosstown Arts artist residency program. She is the fellowship recipient of Roswell Artist in Residency\, Vermont Studio Center and Nars Foundation.

As one of the world’s most accomplished turntablists\, DJ Logic is widely credited for introducing jazz into the hip–hop realms and is considered by most as a highly-respected session musician and an innovative bandleader. \nDywane Thomas\, Jr. also known as MonoNeon\, is an American bassist and experimental musician. He is known for his presence on YouTube playing bass guitar and known for being one of the last people to work with Prince. Thomas also played with Grammy Award-winning R&B artist\, Ne-Yo\, on his fourth studio album. He is a native of Memphis\, Tennessee. \nAs the lead guitarist of Living Colour and a co-founder of the Black Rock Coalition\, Vernon Reid has done a great deal to undermine stereotypical expectations of what music black artists ought to play; his rampant eclecticism encompasses everything from hard rock and punk to funk\, R&B and avant-garde jazz\, and his anarchic\, lightning-fast solos have become something of a hallmark as well. \nDaru Jones is one of the most respected drummers of his generation. Born to two professional musicians\, he began playing the drums at the age of four. Though he got his start in the church\, Jones has been influenced by musicians from a wide range of genres. The Bluff City has been his home since then. \nSoon after settling in\, Art found guidance in two teachers who would direct his career path and help develop his personal understanding of the saxophone. Allen Rippe\, Professor of Saxophone at the University of Memphis and the legendary musician and teacher Lannie McMillan mentored Edmaiston through the early ’90s\, providing chances to grow and offering support when needed. \n\nCountless hours of practice and late nights jamming with the finest musicians in Memphis and around the world has brought Edmaiston to where he is today — a Grammy-nominated seasoned professional of stage and studio. Over the years\, Art has played for thousands of tourists on world-famous Beale Street\, backing up Preston Shannon\, FreeWorld\, Ruby Wilson and more recently\, Susan Marshall and John Paul Keith. Edmaiston has recorded and toured internationally with such artists as Gregg Allman\, Al Green\, Bobby “Blue” Bland and the International Jazz Master Dee Dee Bridgewater\, as well as performing on-stage with some of the biggest names in the entertainment world\, such as Stevie Wonder\, Dr. John\, Ray Parker Jr. and Justin Timberlake. \nAlways active in the studio\, there are several new recording projects featuring Art coming soon from the Joe Restivo 4\, the Love Light Orchestra\, Marc Edgar Stuart\, Marcella & Her Lovers\, and others. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts summer session resident artists Lucy McKeon\, Steve Bellin-Oka\, Nick Peña\, Pamela Allen\, and Pete Hoffecker Mejía will present artist talks in the Pecha Kucha style. \nThe key to Pecha Kucha is the 20×20 format: all presenters show 20 slides for 20 seconds each\, making each presentation concise and dynamic. If you’re wondering what “Pecha Kucha” means\, it draws its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat.” \nPecha Kucha Nights began in Tokyo as an opportunity for artists\, designers and architects to show samples of their work through a concise\, timed presentation in a relaxed community setting. Over the past 10 years\, these events have expanded to hundreds of cities across the globe\, and often include a variety of community members sharing a wide array of interesting (and sometimes hilarious) topics.

Her photojournalistic work has been commissioned and published by outlets such as The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, The Intercept\, and NBC News. She also works with MLK50.com: Justice Through Journalism. \nMary Stanton Knight is a graduate of the University of Mississippi’s Center for the Study of Southern Culture with an MFA in Documentary Expression. She earned her Master’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism with an emphasis in Integrated Marketing Communications from UM’s School of Journalism. Mary received the North Mississippi Hills Heritage Area Alliance Film Grant through the Oxford Film Festival and the Mississippi Film Alliance Emerging Filmmaker Award both in 2018 for her short documentary film\, Dear Hubert Creekmore. Her films have been selected by the Oxford Film Festival\, the South Georgia Film Festival\, and the UM Film Festival.  Her short music documentary\, Singing Out\, was selected to open for filmmaker John Rash’s screenings of his award-winning feature documentary NEGRO TERROR on his North Carolina tour in the summer of 2019. \nRex Jones is a filmmaker with the Southern Documentary Project at the University of Mississippi and an instructor in the MFA in Documentary Expression program at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture.  Rex’s body of work includes FLAG FLAP OVER MISSISSIPPI (2018)\, LA FRONTERA (2017) and LONGLEAF: THE HEART OF PINE (2016)\, which were broadcast on select PBS stations nationwide. BEAUTIFUL JIM (2014) won the Programmers’ Choice Award at the Crossroads Film Festival\, A TIME TO ALL THINGS (2014) won the Heritage Award in Preservation Education from the Mississippi Heritage Trust\, and A PICKUP LOAD OF PIGS (2011) won the Award for Outstanding Media Product from the Wildlife Society. Rex is also the co-author of LECILE: THIS AIN’T MY FIRST RODEO (2015)\, which was the winner of the Will Rogers Medallion Award for Excellence in Western Literature.  Rex’s current film\, CAMILLE: THE ORIGINAL MONSTER STORM (2019)\, will make its broadcast premiere in August.

His sound and style is greatly influenced by the artistry of musicians like Sonny Rollins\, Dexter Gordon\, John Coltrane\, Sonny Stitt\, Charlie Parker\, and Joshua Redman to name a few. Yet the core of his music is deeply rooted in the spiritual from his upbringing in the church. Bryant splits his time as an educator at Southwest TN Community College tutoring in math and science\, a private music instructor at Christian Brothers High School\, and touring with jazz legend Dee Dee Bridgewater. \nMusic is a passion and a release for Bryant. He has been part of a number of ensembles over the years as a member and featured soloist. These ensembles include The University of Memphis Southern Comfort Jazz Ensemble\, The New Memphis Hepcats\, The Sanctuary Jazz Orchestra\, Revelation Instrumental Band\, The Underground Band\, The Charles Pender Quartet\, the Northern Mississippi Jurisdictional Orchestra\, and the J.O. Patterson Fine Arts Orchestra of the Church of God in Christ. He has been featured on several CD projects and has worked with numerous local artists such as Billy Gibson\, Bryant Swearingen\, Reginald Harris\, and Candice Ivory. \n\nAbout Strictly Jazz:\nStrictly Jazz Entertainment is committed to cultivating a growing community in the knowledge and appreciation of jazz. Featuring Stephen Lee (piano)\, Gary Topper (tenor sax)\, Johnny Yancey (trumpet)\, Tyler Cain (acoustic bass)\, and Nygel Yancey (drums). \nDoors at 6:30 pm | performance at 7 pm\nTickets: $15 (purchase on Eventbrite) \nThe Crosstown Jazz Series\, presented by Strictly Jazz Entertainment in collaboration with Crosstown Arts\, is designed to salute classic jazz music as contemporary musicians perform the work of the legends. \n\n \nAbout Stephen Lee:\nStephen Lee is a Memphis native who has come full circle.  His talent and love for the music carried him miles from home\, only to have him return with the whole-hearted desire to enrich and serve his home community.  Stephen found a passion for piano at the age of 8 and has never once looked back. \nWhile at the University of Tennessee\, he studied with jazz legend Donald Brown before moving to New York City to formally launch his career as a jazz artist.  The move to New York City served him well. It proved to be fertile ground\, providing him with access to many of the giants of jazz and landing him in some of the most hallowed venues in the country like Smalls\, Birdland and Iridium. During his tenure in the City\, he shared a stage with a litany of stars like Esperanza Spaulding\, Corcoran Holt\, Ulysses Owens Jr\, Billy Johnson\, Gregory Porter and highly lauded fellow Memphian Kirk Whalum. \nIn addition to his performance credentials\, he served as Musical Director for Manhattan’s Crenshaw Christian Center under the leadership of Dr. Fredrick Price (one of the most well-known names in ministry).  In New York\, he rounded out his studies with a Bachelor’s in Jazz Performance from City College and a Master’s degree in Education from Freed Hardeman University. \nUpon his move to Memphis in 2009\, the growth\, opportunities\, and accolades continued. In 2012\, Stephen received the Rhythm of Gospel Award. In 2013\, he was nominated for First Round in the Stellar Gospel Awards for his album debut\, Music in the Key of my Life.  In 2017\, he won the Steinway and Sons Top Teacher Award and the Jimmie Lunceford Legacy Award. \nEven still\, he moves forward in the spirit of service and humility\, firmly committed to the youth and music arts community in Memphis. He values the importance and impact of the arts for young people\, which understands firsthand. He says\, “Being connected to something you feel passionate about makes a huge difference in a kid’s life. \nLee is also Founder/CEO of the Memphis Jazz Workshop\, a non-profit organization committed to cultivating young musicians by providing learning and performance opportunities with professional artists while embracing Jazz as our regional art form. Memphis Jazz Workshop was formed under the umbrella of LeeJazzOmega. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Strictly Jazz:\nStrictly Jazz Entertainment is committed to cultivating a growing community in the knowledge and appreciation of jazz. We facilitate dialogue and collaboration between the devoted supporters of jazz and the brand new constituents – those new to the genre – for the furthering of the jazz community. We provide a bridge between leading artists and a community that typically does not embrace jazz by promoting concerts in various venues to generate an atmosphere that is viable for the absorption of pure jazz.

DESCRIPTION:Artist Lester Merriweather will discuss his work in Every American Thing\, on view in the Crosstown Arts East Atrium through March 10. \nArtist bio:\nLester Julian Merriweather (b.1978) is a Memphis-based visual artist. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. He holds an MFA from Memphis College of Art and a BA from Jackson State University. \nMerriweather has exhibited extensively throughout the U.S. at various venues such as the Studio Museum in Harlem\, NYC\, Diverseworks in Houston\, the Contemporary in Atlanta\, and Stella Jones Gallery in New Orleans. He has also exhibited abroad at the Zacheta National Gallery in Warsaw\, Poland. He has exhibited locally at Powerhouse Memphis\, The Brooks Museum of Art\, The Dixon Gallery\, Crosstown Arts and The CMPLX. \nMerriweather served as the Curatorial Director at the University of Memphis for the Jones Gallery and the Martha & Robert Fogelman Galleries of Contemporary Art for six years. He served on the Board of Directors for Number\, Inc. Independent Journal for the Arts where he created the Art of the South Series. He participated in the Collabortory Memphis project. He was also a founding member of the ArtsMemphis Artist Advisory Council and the artsAccelerator Grant Panel Program. Complex Magazine named him one of Fifteen Young Black Artists Making Waves in the Artworld. \nHe currently serves as the Curatorial Consultant for The PPF Art Collection. He is on advisory panels for the CLTV and LocateArts. Merriweather serves as Principal of LJM Studio Memphis.

DESCRIPTION:Gabe Mayhan is a cinematographer who shoots features\, documentaries\, shorts\, television shows\, and commercials. Join Gabe as he discusses setting up shots\, camera and lens choices\, lighting\, working with directors\, directing documentaries\, creating a sustainable career as a cinematographer in a fly-over state\, and his involvement in the Arkansas Film Society. \nDoors at 6:30 pm | presentation at 7 pm \nShoot & Splice is a monthly forum for film makers presented by Indie Memphis & Crosstown Arts. \n\nAbout Gabe Mayhan:\nGabe Mayhan has compiled a diverse body of work over the course of his cinematography career. Whether it was from his time covering breaking news\, to shooting in remote locations in South America for an adventure show\, or crafting stylistic narrative stories\, he approaches each project with dutiful ambition\, respectful collaboration\, and innovative technique. His work has been screened at film festivals such as Slamdance and Tribeca\, broadcast on networks the likes of HBO\, Showtime and PBS\, and screened theatrically across the US. Many of the films have been recognized and awarded for the cinematography. \n2016 was a pretty big year for Gabe\, having two films released theatrically\, Greater and Lazy Eye. Greater is a heartfelt drama set in the world of college football. And Lazy Eye\, a bittersweet romance about reconnecting with a lost love. Although very different in style and content\, both films have been well-received. Gabe also returned behind the lens for the second season of  Mineral Explorers\, a travel show that explores the origins and geological stories of minerals from around the world. \nOther forthcoming works are the feature films All the Birds Have Flown South\, a southern gothic drama that deals with despair and addiction\, and Antiquities\, a coming-of-age story about a young man encountering loss and finding himself in the journey. \nWhether behind the lens or in the director’s chair\, his work on documentaries is gaining attention as well. In 2012\, he shot All About Ann\, an HBO documentary chronicling the life and legacy of Texas Governor Ann Richards\, and Champion Trees\, a documentary for PBS that explores the relationship between art and nature. The show captured two Emmys for Cultural Documentary and Cinematography in 2014. Slated to air spring of 2017\, the documentary Dream Land tells the history of an African American neighborhood during segregation and the lasting impact of Urban Renewal. In both Champion Trees and Dream Land\, Gabe held double duties as the films’ director and cinematographer. \nGabe’s unique vision and strong understanding of story have quickly gained the interest of filmmakers and audiences around the country. He brings an understanding that each project has its own way to be crafted visually\, and within each story there is a unique opportunity to evolve the narrative emotionally through the cinematography\, allowing the film to be seen — in its best light.
