It’s a chance to get a special glimpse behind the curtain and better understand the art and the artists. \nThe Earthworm and the Hawk is the overlap between two states of being. In the private and non-verbal world of Melissa Dunn’s sketchbook\, she burrows deep\, generating drawings intuitively from her imagination. As the pages fill up\, she steps back and shifts perspective\, becoming more objective. The lay of the land comes into sharp focus. Here she maps out\, poses questions\, and acts decisively. \nWhat were you meant for? is an art exhibition that delves deep into the world of film to uncover the seldom-seen layers of Black male identity. It navigates a tapestry of scenes that bring to the forefront the poignant battles between vulnerability and societal expectations\, challenging the confining boxes of toxic masculinity. Through curated cinematic moments\, the exhibition forces viewers to confront their own biases and question ingrained beliefs about strength\, resilience\, and emotional depth. \nIliumpta is a retelling of Homer’s Iliad set in the Southernmost bayous of Mississippi. Named after the county the story takes place in\, Iliumpta draws comparisons between masculinity in the American South and the sandaled heroes of yore\, often pointing out the weakness in a regional outlook that insists on staying put during hurricanes.

Named after the county the story takes place in\, Iliumpta draws comparisons between masculinity in the American South and the sandaled heroes of yore\, often pointing out the weakness in a regional outlook that insists on staying put during hurricanes. \nDirectly\, this work is about Southern fatalism and its effects on masculinity. Fatalism makes an outlook so despairing that stoicism may masquerade as heroism. The men in these works shout from a nihilistic void\, and in their attempts to be heroic\, they\, like the ancients before them\, choose death over happiness\, a closed ear before sound advice\, and doom before an apology. \nMichael Roy\, a.k.a. Birdcap\, grew up near the bayous of Southern Mississippi\, a region battered by hurricanes and scarred by a violent history. In the past decade\, Birdcap’s career as a muralist has spanned continents\, but the artist’s work is a product of the South\, both a love letter to the region he calls home and a challenge to its problems.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents “But Then\, Suddenly\, I Was Looking From the Inside Out” by Coe Lapossy on the East Pop-Out Walls.\n \nThe East Pop-Out Walls at Crosstown Arts\nOn view through Sunday\, January 21\, 2024\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nThe first time Coe Lapossy heard someone talk about compartmentalizing their life\, so they could make all the separate and demanding things work together\, theyI were a kid watching a television interview with Jodie Foster. It was the typical interview question\, “How do you handle such a busy life? How do you accomplish all this?” Foster very nonchalantly explained that she just compartmentalizes everything. Lapossy remembers realizing that this was a completely unfamiliar way of being. They did not understand what Jodie was talking about\, and they did not believe they could live that way. But Then\, Suddenly\, I Was Looking From the Inside Out is about “no compartments.” Everything is mashing together in life all the time — and while Lapossy longs for stability and order — it’s all happening at once and they love how that feels — what that allows for. Not to be confused with multitasking\, this is a kind of nurtured chaos. \nThrough a resistance to the tenants of modernism\, Coe Lapossy centers erased histories and marginalized labor. They create work that revels in the subversive\, how it sneaks in and makes change\, how it works undetected because it must. They revisit artifacts of queerness wedged within a seemingly straight world\, choosing these references\, linking narratives from various times throughout history\, things forgotten\, erased\, messages that “flew under the radar.” With the reuse of these artifacts they create a meditation on what bodies we value\, how we memorialize\, and what/who survives under the conditions we create.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents “Days” by Noah Thomas ​​Miller in the East Gallery\, South Pop-Out Wall\, and Art Bar Bar Top.\n \nThe East Gallery\, South Pop-Out Wall\, and Art Bar Bar Top at Crosstown Arts\nOn view through Sunday\, January 21\, 2024\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nDays follows the everyday observations of the structures we interact with. The houses become more than just a residence\, but become individuals themselves. The shadows start to blur the line of where the walls stop and where a presence might begin. \nHave you ever touched a door knob and thought it felt like shaking someone’s hand? Instead of treating it like a utilitarian tool? \nOne can start to feel their identity fuse with the walls around them day after day. This new presence\, which we often call “home”\, silently witnesses all of our joys and sorrows\, and the passage of time. They are the only ones who have a deep understanding of our solitude and shared narratives. \nThese pieces are carved wood\, masked in layers of house paint\, and nailed together in a similar fashion as the places that house them. This is done to connect the viewer to the physicality and craftsmanship inherent in the creation of homes.\n\nNoah Thomas ​​Miller is Illinois-born but finds his home in Memphis. He works in multivalent mediums\, whether that be woodworking\, film\, sound installation\, or a combination of materials\, to preserve memory and tell stories. \nHis work is constantly deconstructing and reconstructing a scene to find its essence. It’s easier to recall a feeling than the details of an image. One can find that in most of his work — stripping the image of detail (or color) and isolating the tone of a scene to tell the narrative itself. \nHe attended Memphis College of Art and has continued his practice through work with museums\, film programs\, art institutions\, and most importantly at home.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents an Opening Reception for the Autumn Art Exhibitions in the Galleries at Crosstown Arts.\n \nThe Galleries at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, September 1\, 2023\nTime: 6-8 pm\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nCelebrate the opening of the autumn/winter 2023 art exhibitions by Ahmad George\, Noah Thomas Miller\, and Coe Lapossy with an evening of art\, conversation\, and food at Crosstown Arts. The menu for the evening is prepared by Chef Cole Jeanes\, founder of Kinfolk Restaurant\, and the food is generously provided by Ben E. Keith Co. \nThe Molasses Man & Other Delta Tales serves as an anthology of stories based off of Ahmad George’s life and experiences with people they’ve encountered here and not. These works feature scenes with existing and non-existing figures from folklore and mythology sourced from the American South\, elsewhere\, and created. \nAhmad George is a painter and multimedia artist from Memphis\, Tennessee. They’ve shown at NADA Miami as well as national and international group and solo exhibitions.Through their work\, they explore the liminal space between reality\, mythology\, folklore\, and self. Their world-building thins the veil of this world by mixing  imagery of the American South (mostly scenes from Tennessee and Mississippi) with local and sourced myths from different parts of the world. Oftentimes\, they use people from their own life to be the protagonists of these narratives. Major themes they explore in their paintings currently include generational history\, transformation\, consequence\, and spiritual alchemy. \n___________________________________________________________________________ \nDays follows the everyday observations of the structures we interact with. It’s a chance to get a special glimpse behind the curtain and better understand the art and the artists. \n“Edgewise: Exploring Pattern and Rhythm with Line” by Khara Woods presents a collection of paintings\, sculpture and creative devices developed since 2016. The works examine the creation of movement and texture focusing on a restricted set of grids\, bold colors and shapes inspired by basic geometry. Within these confines\, there are arrangements that intertwine\, shift and vibrate across canvas and wood. \n“Entrances\, Exits and the Spaces Betwixt” by Tangela Mathis presents contrasting aspects of personality\, showcasing the yin and yang of pneuma. The exhibit represents a mental\, emotional\, and spiritual transformation within a palpable dreamscape. Works presented depict and embrace ideas of transitory spaces visually\, mentally and physically.

DESCRIPTION:The Galleries at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, April 21\, 2023\nTimes: 6-8 pm\nTickets: Free and open to the public \nCrosstown Arts announces its spring 2023 arts programming — “Deceive the Heavens to Cross the Seas” by McLean Fahnestock\, “Edgewise: Exploring Pattern and Rhythm with Line” by Khara Woods\, “Entrances\, Exits and the Spaces Betwixt” by Tangela Mathis\, and “Color Thread” by Carl Fox. \nThe opening reception is scheduled for Friday\, April 21\, 6-8 p.m. The exhibitions run from Saturday\, April 22\, through Sunday\, August 6.   \nScreening Room:\nMcLean Fahnestock — “Deceive the Heavens to Cross the Seas”\n \nThis exhibition is composed of videos from McLean Fahnestock’s Stratagem series\, where the sea and sky flip and merge to generate a new\, seductive yet false horizon. Stratagems are plans or schemes that are designed to deceive. Usually referring to warfare\, they are a well-executed artifice upon an enemy. Working with her interest in desire as it manifests in the landscape\, these works present the ways that our desires can open a door to our ultimate deception.  \nIn a presentation unique to Crosstown Arts\, the videos have been loaded into a custom program that randomly chooses the video and the length of time the video will loop before the next one is randomly chosen to play. Viewers will have a shifting experience that will never repeat. \nThe title for the exhibition comes from the first of the 36 Stratagems – a 6th century Chinese text covering political\, military\, and social strategy written by an unknown scholar. \nMcLean Fahnestock works with the dynamically changing landscape. Her practice is centered on our desire for specific visual and physical landscapes as manifested through the concept of paradise. This has led to investigations into how this desire has been the catalyst for climate change\, colonialism\, and ecocide. She utilizes digital forms of collage\, video\, and new media. McLean received a BFA from Middle Tennessee State University and MFA from California State University Long Beach. Her work has been exhibited and screened across the United States and internationally. Her work was selected for Off the Screen at the 57th Ann Arbor Film Festival. She has been an artist in residence at Stove Works in Chattanooga\, Tennessee\, and The Lock-Up in Newcastle\, New South Wales\, Australia. McLean keeps her studio in Old Hickory\, Tennessee. \n \nEast Gallery: \nKhara Woods — “Edgewise: Exploring Pattern and Rhythm with Line” \n“Edgewise: Exploring Pattern and Rhythm with Line” presents a collection of paintings\, sculpture and creative devices developed since 2016. The works examine the creation of movement and texture focusing on a restricted set of grids\, bold colors and shapes inspired by basic geometry. Within these confines\, there are arrangements that intertwine\, shift and vibrate across canvas and wood.\n\nKhara Woods was born and raised in Memphis\, Tennessee. She comes from a family of artists and craftspeople. She continues the tradition with her geometric abstract paintings and sculpture. Woods began working as a public artist in 2015\, creating and installing murals. In 2016\, she began her studio practice. Woods works primarily with wood\, using it as a canvas or to make 3D art. Mural Arts Philadelphia commissioned Woods as a lead artist for its Art & Environment Initiative in 2019. She completed her first large-scale data visualization mural\, “Basin Portraits\,” in October of that year. She created paintings and mini sculptural studies for her first solo exhibition in October 2020 at the Beverly and Sam Ross Gallery at Christian Brothers University. Some of Woods’ latest op-art-inspired paintings and a layered wood sculpture were displayed in the Axis exhibition at Hilliard Art Museum in Lafayette\, Louisiana in 2021. Since then\, Woods is continuing to develop her studio practice and making more 3D works. and State Fellowship Program\, and was the finalist for the Southern Prize. \n \nWest Gallery: \nTangela Mathis — “Entrances\, Exits and the Spaces Betwixt” \n“Entrances\, Exits and the Spaces Betwixt” presents contrasting aspects of personality\, showcasing the yin and yang of pneuma. The exhibit represents a mental\, emotional\, and spiritual transformation within a palpable dreamscape. Works presented depict and embrace ideas of transitory spaces visually\, mentally and physically.  \n“Entrances\, Exits and the Spaces Betwixt” offers the public a glimpse into the unfiltered psyche of TANGELA. The exhibit presents contrasting aspects of her personality\, showcasing the yin and yang of her pneuma. TANGELA is undergoing a mental\, emotional\, and spiritual transformation\, and invites visitors to witness her journey as she ebbs and flows.\n\n \nArt Bar Bar Top: \nCarl Fox — “Color Thread”  \n“Color Thread” by Carl Fox is a mixed-media installation featuring works in acrylic\, oil\, and watercolor paired with text. The installation invites the viewer to move along a tapestry of color and hold space for Carl’s thoughts on the nature of color and how an examination of that nature can be brought to other aspects of life. Do colors have identity? Can one re-create an experience of color? How do the richest colors — browns\, coppers\, maroons — seem to slide under us\, unnoticed\, as we move through everyday life?

Artists in residence will have their studios open on Friday\, April 14\, from 6 to 9 p.m. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nSu-Yee Lin writes stories and poetry that grapple with issues of identity\, memory\, environment\, and mythology. Her work often lies on the border between the real and the strange\, and she is interested in the intersections between the surreal and the natural world. She was a Fulbright Fellow to China and has had work published in the Pushcart Prize anthology\, Tor.com\, Electric Literature\, Bennington Review\, Day One\, Nashville Review\, The Offing\, and other literary journals\, and short stories translated into Italian and Chinese. \nKeith S. Wilson is an Affrilachian Poet and a Cave Canem fellow. He is a recipient of an NEA Fellowship\, an Elizabeth George Foundation Grant\, and an Illinois Arts Council Agency Award\, and has received both a Kenyon Review Fellowship and a Stegner Fellowship. His book\, Fieldnotes on Ordinary Love (Copper Canyon)\, was recognized by the New York Times as a best new book of poetry. \nEdo Rosenblith (B. 1988 Tel Aviv\, Israel) received a BFA in painting in 2011 at the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Visual Art at Washington University-St. Louis in 2017. Edo is a compulsive draftsman who works in a variety of mediums: murals\, painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, and book arts. \nKelsey Harrison’s sculptural work has been shown in institutions nationally including The Jewish Museum\, Abrons Art Center\, and The Knockdown Center in New York\, SOMArts in San Francisco\, The Sullivan Galleries in Chicago\, The College of William and Mary in Virginia\, and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art and the Utah Museum of Fine Art in Salt Lake City. Harrison received her BFA in Sculpture from Purchase College\, State University of New York and her MFA in Sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of Memphis. \nApollo Mighty is a Memphis-born R&B/Soul artist. He uses his music to express his many selves\, embracing the extremes of his own personal ugliness and beauty — while also reflecting the world around him. He has worked extensively in the music scenes in Memphis and Chicago and his 2020 EP project Behavior amassed over 600k streams across platforms. \nJennifer Sargent makes intricate drawings and handwoven tapestries. As an artist weaver she considers herself both a contemporary practitioner and a part of a longer continuum that is thousands of years old. This idea is both a comfort and a challenge. One of two elements is always present in Sargent’s work\, either story telling or the natural world (whether wild or domesticated). Sargent creates an abstracted sense of these ideas or experiences through the layering of pattern and color.

McFerren will be present and will moderate for the Michelle Duster talk on the East Atrium stage right after the screening.  \n  \nMichelle Duster is an author\, speaker\, public historian\, professor\, and champion of racial and gender equity. She has written\, edited\, or contributed to several dozen articles and over 20 books. Her most recent\, released January 4\, 2022\, is Ida B. Wells\, Voice of Truth (Henry Holt & Co). And a year before\, her book Ida B. the Queen: The Extraordinary Life and Legacy of Ida B. Wells was published (Atria/One Signal Publishers). \nShe also co-wrote the popular children’s history book\, Tate and His Historic Dream; co-edited Impact: Personal Portraits of Activism; Shifts: An Anthology of Women’s Growth Through Change; Michelle Obama’s Impact on African American Women and Girls; and edited two books that include the writings of her paternal great-grandmother\, Ida B. Wells. She has contributed to several anthologies and written articles for Ms. Magazine\,TIME\, Essence\, HuffPost\, Teen Vogue\, Refinery29\, The Hill\, Daily Beast\, and The North Star. She also was involved in the development of the Ida B. Wells doll\, released January 2022\, which is part of Mattel’s Inspiring Women Barbie doll series. She has appeared on television programs on MSNBC\, CNN\, WTTW\, CBS & CW as well as numerous radio shows. Her advocacy has led to multiple public history projects that include street names\, monuments\, historical markers\, murals\, and documentary films that highlight women and African Americans\, including Wells. \nHer many awards include the 2022 Ripple Effect Award from Public Narratives\, 2019 Multi-Generational Activist Award from the Illinois Human Rights Commission\, and the 2019 Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Award from Dartmouth College. \n  \nDr. Jacqueline Trimble lives and writes in Montgomery\, Alabama\, where she is  a professor of English and chairs the Department of Languages and Literatures at Alabama State University. Her work has appeared in various online and print publications including Poetry Magazine\, Poet Lore\, The Offing\, The Louisville Review\, and Blue Lake Review. American Happiness (2016)\, her first collection\, published by New South Books\, won the Balcones Poetry Prize. How to Survive the Apocalypse was released in August 2022. \n  \nAli Manning is a food scientist\, food educator\, author\, and founder of Umami Food Consulting. With over ten years in the food industry\, she utilizes her passion for food\, science\, and community to help food entrepreneurs tackle the issues beyond the kitchen. Ali is the Program Consultant for Project Green Fork and the creator of Food Science 4 Kids\, a program that teaches grade-school children food science. She recently published her first children’s book\, entitled Can I Play with my Food?\, a book that explores food and science through the eyes of two sisters\, Nema and Lexi. Ali is a graduate of Alabama A&M University and a Huntsville\, Alabama\, native\, but after being a transplant for nearly twelve years\, she truly considers Memphis her home. \n  \nNubia Yasin is a screenwriter\, poet\, and multidisciplinary artist born in Memphis\, Tennessee. She uses her craft to explore themes around shame\, sex\, love\, and family\, with an acute focus on the Black Femme experience. She often pulls from her family history as a first generation Somali-American living in the south to tell stories about Black womanhood and Black motherhood. Her work is imbued with a sense of spirituality\, incorporating elements of Islam and Southern American Hoodoo. The Blood and Body (2022) is her debut collection of poetry. \n  \nDr. Terrence Tucker is an associate professor and chair of African American literature in the Department of English at the University of Memphis. He is the author of Furiously Funny: Comic Rage from Ralph Ellison to Chris Rock (University Press of Florida\, 2018). He has also published essays on topics ranging from race and pedagogy to Ernest Gaines to African-American superheroes and in journals from Pedagogy\, Southern Literary Journal\, and College Language Association Journal. He is finishing work on his second book project\, The Rise of the Afristocracy: Portraits of the Black Elite in Contemporary African American Literature contracted with University Press of Florida. This book traces the representation of the Black elite in African-American literature from the lives of free Blacks during slavery to rising Black middle and upper classes in the twenty-first century. \n  \nDr. Shelby Crosby’s research spans mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century African American literature\, representations of womanhood (particularly Black womanhood)\, and critical race theory. It threads together critical race\, Black feminism\, and literary historical frameworks to interrogate an American national story. Dr. Crosby is currently working on a book manuscript that examines the pervasive derogatory ideologies of Black womanhood. Using Black feminist theory to ground the text\, she will examine such authors as Frederick Douglass\, Williams Wells Brown\, and Martin Delany\, arguing that\, through their adoption of traditional demarcations of white womanhood\, Black women are further pushed to the margins of American society.

The program premiered to sold-out audiences in New York City in Spring 2022. Each of the newly-composed works included in The Peace Chronicles is inspired by a poem from Dr. Sealey-Ruiz’s book of the same name. In performance\, the words and music are juxtaposed next to one another\, inviting listeners to find connections between the different media. The programs are structured dramatically\, the poems tracing a path from conflict through reconciliation and peace. \nABOUT ICEBERG NEW MUSIC \nICEBERG New Music is a collective of ten young composers based in New York City. ICEBERG’s mission is to promote the idea that substance\, not surface\, is the heart of music creation and perception. The collective’s ten member composers hail from different schools of thought and cultivate radically different sounds — from musical theater and indie rock to avant-garde sounds and electronic installations — but their contrasting musical languages belie a shared emphasis on structure and depth of meaning. When these artists compose for the same ensemble and present their works during a joint concert\, the result is a glimpse into the ever-widening possibilities of art music in the twenty-first century. \nABOUT YOLANDA SEALEY-RUIZ \nDr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz is an award-winning Associate Professor at Teachers College\, Columbia University. Her research focuses on racial literacy in teacher education\, Black girl literacies\, and Black and Latinx male high school students. A sought-after speaker on issues of race\, culturally responsive pedagogy\, and diversity\, Sealey-Ruiz works with K-12 and higher education school communities to increase their racial literacy knowledge and move toward more equitable school experiences for their Black and Latinx students. Sealey-Ruiz appeared in Spike Lee’s “2 Fists Up: We Gon’ Be Alright”\, a documentary about the Black Lives Matter movement and the campus protests at Mizzou. Her co-authored book [with Dr. Detra Price-Dennis] Advancing Racial Literacies in Teacher Education: Toward Activism for Equity in Digital Spaces will be published in April 2021. \nABOUT BLUESHIFT ENSEMBLE \nBlueshift is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. Members of Blueshift are involved in almost every corner of the Memphis music community\, from performing in the Memphis Symphony Orchestra\, recording in the studio\, teaching at the University of Memphis and Rhodes College\, playing in your favorite local bands\, and composing original music for film. Founded by flutist Jenny Davis and cellist Jonathan Kirkscey in 2016\, Blueshift aims to bring classical music out of the concert hall and into the community. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis programming is made possible in part thanks to an Organizational Development Fund grant from New Music USA.

Scheidt School of Music. \nThe Sinta Quartet\, First Prize Winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition\, has earned praise from audiences and critics alike for its virtuosic performances\, compelling recordings and distinctive repertoire.  Hailed as “…a tight-knit ensemble exploding with power and virtuosity and an un-concealable ambition to connect with its newly found listeners” (Boston Musical Intelligencer)\, the Sinta Quartet performs entirely from memory\, which strengthens an already palpable connection with its audiences.  Named for its mentor\, legendary University of Michigan Saxophone Professor Donald Sinta\, the quartet’s additional competition successes include a Gold Medal at the 2018 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition\, First Prize at the 2017 M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition\, the Alice Coleman Grand Prize at the 2013 Coleman Chamber Music Competition and First Prize in the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance Quartet Competition. \nSinta Quartet’s repertoire is diverse\, ranging from commissions by today’s emerging composers to standards from the saxophone quartet literature to transcriptions by master composers such as Dvorak\, Schubert and Shostakovich. In 2019 they released their debut recording\, Collider\, on CAG Records featuring new works for saxophone quartet. In 2011\, The group gave the World Premiere of Bolcom’s own transcription of his Concerto Grosso with Concert Band\, joining the University of Michigan Symphony Band in 2011 for performances at Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Concert Hall\, Beijing’s National Center for the Performing Arts and the Shanghai Conservatory.  The quartet’s subsequent concerto recording garnered praise: Audiophile Audition declared them “superb musicians” and American Record Guide called it “the highlight of the album.” They have also made radio appearances on New York’s WQXR and Interlochen Public Radio\, and is featured frequently on American Public Media’s Performance Today. \n​Recent career highlights include Sinta Quartet’s New York recital debut at Weill Recital Hall\, Purdue University Convocations\, Kravis Center for the Performing Arts\, Chautauqua Institution\, Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival\, Rockport Chamber Music Festival\, Music from Angel Fire\, and in Michigan at the Great Lakes Music Festival the Detroit Institute of Arts.  Among the ensemble’s extensive educational outreach activities\, they recently enjoyed extended residencies for Joplin Pro Musica (MO) and Anchorage Concert Association\, both culminating with performances as part of their season series. \nFeatured international appearances include recitals in Palma de Mallorca\, Spain; Strasbourg\, France (for the 17th World Saxophone Congress); St. Andrews\, Scotland (as part of the 16th World Saxophone Congress); Paris\, France; Geneva and Montreux\, Switzerland; and Thessaloniki\, Greece; as well as a trip to Japan as one of a select group of ensembles chosen for the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. \n​Equally committed to education and community engagement\, the quartet has presented clinics and performances at numerous colleges and universities including the University of Michigan\, Michigan State University\, Eastman School of Music\, the University of Delaware\, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst\, SUNY-Potsdam’s Crane School of Music\, and many others\, as well as a residency at Grand Valley State University. The audience chooses the order of over 20 pieces specially chosen for each show in this fast-paced hybrid arts experience that’s a fan favorite across North America. Interactive online performances of Fruit Flies Like a Banana: Virtual Style put everyone in a front-row seat\, and all are invited to help create a show that leaps off the screen. \nFew musical ensembles earn top marks for their “deft choreography” (The Wall Street Journal)\, but this is no ordinary ensemble. Part chamber music group\, part theatre company\, part modern dance troupe\, part circus act\, The Fourth Wall blends music\, theatre\, dance\, and acrobatics into a new hybrid art form. DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts resident artists Jessica Sabogal and Shanna Strauss will present artist talks. \nFree and open to the public \n\nJessica Sabogal is a cuir Colombian-American muralistx from San Francisco whose large-scale public artworks attempt to document and disrupt. Sabogal has consistently reinvented what it means to be a female muralist in a male-dominated industry by utilizing her medium for social change\, action\, and empowerment. \nHer murals have been commissioned by Facebook\, Google\, 20th Century Fox\, the University of Southern California\, the University of California\, the University of Arizona\, and the University of Utah\, among many others. In 2016\, Sabogal received KQED’s Women to Watch Award and the following year was commissioned by the Amplifier Foundation for the 2017 Women’s March\, after which her “Women Are Perfect” campaign gained international acclaim. Sabogal’s work has since been featured in national and international news and media sources including CNN\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Huffington Post\, and The New York Times. \nJessica Sabogal often works with artist Shanna Strauss\, her life and collaborative partner. Essential to their practice is a system of similar core beliefs — feminist\, radical\, pro-people\, and engaged in social change. Their interdisciplinary work implies that collaboration is at the heart of self and community. Both draw inspiration\, connection\, and influence from contemporary political and social movements\, which have always used artistic expression as a critical form of resistance against forces that wage and risk their erasure. For their viewers\, Sabogal and Strauss create collective narratives of diaspora rooted in kinship and solidarity. The pair have been commissioned by The California Endowment\, the University of California San Francisco\, the Euphrat Museum\, and the PHI Foundation. Most recently\, they received the Kala Art Institute 2020-2021 Fellowship Award. \n\nAs a Tanzanian-American\, biracial\, bilingual woman\, who was raised in Tanzania and later moved to the U.S. and Canada\, Shanna Strauss has had to navigate multiple identities\, geographic locations\, histories and cultures. This reality led her to an interest in diaspora identities and what it means to live between different worlds. In her work\, she explores identity and belonging and how oral tradition\, spirituality\, and family legacy are transmitted inter-generationally\, across time and place. Working predominantly on found wood\, she creates mixed-media portraits by combining photo transfer\, painting\, wood burning\, wood carving\, beads\, fabric and other materials — all selected for their symbolic and cultural significance. \nStrauss often works with artist Jessica Sabogal\, her life and collaborative partner. Essential to their practice is a system of similar core beliefs — feminist\, radical\, pro-people\, and engaged in social change. DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nCrosstown Arts resident artists Brian Pera\, Lawrence Matthews\, Clare Johnson\, Khari Wynn\, Tadasuke Jinno\, and Johnathan Payne will discuss their work in a Pecha Kucha-style artist talk. \nThe Crosstown Arts residency program offers multidisciplinary residencies to visiting and Memphis-based artists and curators\, working in any creative discipline including visual and performing arts\, music\, film\, and writing in all genres. \nThe key to Pecha Kucha is the 20×20 format: all presenters show 20 slides for 20 seconds each\, making each presentation concise and dynamic. These pieces will be showcased in a pop-up gallery on April 8 from 5-6 pm. \nThis workshop meets on March 11\, 18\, 25\, and April 1. \n
