SUMMARY:"The Films of Stan Brakhage" with an original live score by Cloudland Canyon
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents “The Films of Stan Brakhage” with an original live score by Cloudland Canyon at the Crosstown Theater on Thursday\, March 6\, at 7:00 pm.\n\n\n\n \nStan Brakhaage\, a wildly prolific experimental filmmaker in American avant-garde cinema and one of cinema’s principle architects of cinematic modernism\, made nearly 400 films and eight books of film criticism and theory between 1952-2003. Dozens of his films\, including “Anticipation of the Night\,” “Mothlight\,” “Dog Star Man\,” and “Scenes from Under Childhood” are acknowledged masterworks. The techniques he pioneered \, most notably rapid editing\, handheld camera\, lens flares and physical manipulation of the filmstrip\, came to define experimental cinema\, but they were also absorbed by advertising\, music videos\, and Hollywood.\nChallenging all taboos in his exploration of birth\, sex\, death\, and the search for God\,” he turned his camera on explicit lovemaking\, childbirth\, even autopsy. Many of his most famous works pursue the nature of vision itself and transcend the act of filming. His films seek to change the way we see. They encourage viewers to abandon traditional structure in favor of pure visual perception that is not reliant on naming what is seen. His goal was to create a more visceral  visual experience. He believed that “a stream of visual consciousness could be nothing less than the pathway of the soul.” His films are shot in highly sensual colors and utilize minimal soundtracks. \n \nCloudland Canyon  is an experimental rock/psychedelic rock band formed in 2002 by Kip Uhlhorn and Simon Wojan. Cloudland Canyon has released several critically acclaimed albums include Fin Eaves\, Lie in Light\, and An Arabesque. Their recent releases have been produced by Sonic Boom from Spacemen3/Spectrum. With each release\, Uhlhorn has pushed the envelope of experimental pop music\, collaborating with various musicians and producers to create intricate and other wordly compositions .Cloudland Canyon is a must-listen for anyone interested in the possibilities of experimental music in the 21 century. New members joining Uhlhorn in the band include Corbin Linebarier of General Labor\, Graham Burks of Loose Opinions\, and Alex Greene of Alex Greene and the Rolling Head Orchestra.

SUMMARY:Film Series :  In The Mood For Love (2000) directed by Wong Kar-wai
DESCRIPTION:Film Series :  In The Mood For Love (2000) directed by Wong Kar-wai\n\nHong Kong\, 1962: Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) and Su Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung Man-yuk) move into neighboring apartments on the same day. Their encounters are formal and polite—until a discovery about their spouses creates an intimate bond between them. At once delicately mannered and visually extravagant\, Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments. With its aching musical soundtrack and exquisitely abstract cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping-bin\, this film has been a major stylistic influence on the past decade of cinema\, and is a milestone in Wong’s redoubtable career. (Janus Films).\n\nDoors:6:30\nScreening: 7:00\n$5:00 per entry

His music has been featured on Sirius/XM Radio\, and he has appeared on several of his brother Kirk’s albums. As a solo artist\, Kevin has released two albums\, Timetable and One Life to Love. He has also been a dedicated educator and performer at the Nashville Jazz Workshop\, where he participated in the acclaimed “Jazz On The Move” series\, presenting the life and music of jazz legends Nat King Cole and Billy Strayhorn.\n\nALONZO BODDEN\nA regular panel member on NPR’s Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me\, Alonzo Bodden has been making audiences around the country laugh for more than 20 years. In 2019\, he starred in his fourth stand-up special\, Alonzo Bodden: Heavy Lightweight\, which premiered exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.\n\nKIRK WHALUM\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, Tennessee\, gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album.\n

SUMMARY:Lovelight Orchestra featuring John Nemeth
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Lovelight Orchestra featuring John Nemeth in the Theater \nThe Theater at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, October 11\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $30 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nThe phrase “the Memphis sound” often evokes Sun rockabilly or the mid-‘60s “deep soul” era of Stax\, but a style equally important in the city’s rich musical history was the big band blues found on the singles of Bobby “Blue” Bland\, B.B. King and Herman ”Junior” Parker. It’s a sound proudly celebrated today by the Love Light Orchestra\, a group of seasoned Memphis musicians whose name derives from Bland’s 1961 hit “Turn On Your Love Light.” \nThe 10-piece band—initially envisioned by guitarist Joe Restivo\, vocalist John Nemeth and arranger/trumpeter Marc Franklin—also reveals their affection for Bland here through covers of “”I’ve Been Wrong So Long” and “Poverty\,” and they tip their hat to King and Parker through\, respectively\, “Bad Breaks” and “Sometimes.” \nIn addition to dipping into the catalogs of Buddy Ace\, Freddie King\, and Percy Mayfield\, the band demonstrates their deftness with uptown blues via the solid originals “Singing For My Supper\, “Lonesome and High\,” and the Ray Charles-inspired opener “See Why I Love You.” Casual fans of Memphis music might only recognize their cover of Al Green’s iconic “Love and Happiness\,” but it’s reset here as a shuffle\, building upon riffs that Franklin says were inspired by Charles Mingus’ “Fables of Faubus.” \nThe Love Light Orchestra’s overall sound\, says Franklin\, was inspired by Joe Scott\, the longtime arranger for Bland\, whose work Franklin discovered after he was hired to play with Bland in the early ‘90s [Saxophonist Art Edmaiston and drummer Earl Lowe also did stints with Bland]. “The first time I heard his work it sounded like Ellington\, but more downhome\, with extended harmonics that you don’t necessarily hear on blues or soul records. It’s a jazz thing\, throwing extra notes into the chords—at Stax they didn’t do 6th chords.” \nBland and King’s signature styles developed with the aid of formally trained Memphis musicians versed in swing arrangements. King’s first two singles featured the city’s first family of jazz\, Phineas Newborn\, Sr.\, and his sons Calvin and Phineas\, Jr.\, and some of King and Bland’s early recordings featured arranger and multi-instrumentalist Onzie Horne\, Sr.\, later a contributor to “Theme From Shaft.” \n“The Memphis sound of the ‘50s put in the sophistication with the horns\, but it never lost that gritty aspect of the blues\,” says Nemeth. “And the spirituality in the vocals was tremendous— the melodies have such great movements\, and the lyrical rhythms are perfect.” \nGuitarist Restivo has plenty of solos here\, but notes “we wanted to make a horn record\, so the featured instrument is saxophone. That was the axe of choice on Beale Street at the time.” Grammy winning producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang cut the record at the tiny DKDC bar in Midtown Memphis\, and recalls “it was more or less done after we cut it.” \n“This music is really supposed to be heard live\, to be in the room to feel the horns\, and it turned out magically—lightning in a bottle twelve times in just a couple hours.” \nJohn Nemeth / Vocals\nMarc Franklin / Trumpet / Arranger\nArt Edmaiston / Tenor Sax\nJason Yasinsky / Trombone\nKirk Smothers / Baritone Sax\nPaul Mckinney / Trumpet\nEarl Lowe / Drums\nJoe Restivo / Guitar\nMatthew Wilson / Double Bass\nGerald Stephens/Piano

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents YOU’RE THE LIFE OF ME
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents a special screening of You’re the Life of Me in Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater\nThursday\, October 3\, 2024\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 pm | Film begins at 7:00 pm (sharp!) \nShevan Bastian / 2024  \nFirst time filmmaker Shevan Bastian sets out in Jackson Tennessee with these questions in mind\, as he interviews and works with a group of musicians\, while examining the roots of Black music in a small Southern city on the edge of the Mississippi Delta.  \nThe documentary film You’re the Life of Me loosely follows the pursuit of creative renewal that Howard Rambsy and Barbara Jean Mercer experience as they engage with music making in their later years. Rambsy has written and arranged an obscure 1977 soul song recorded by a band consisting of his friends and family called Cold-Blooded Express. The song\, You’re the Life of Me\, is being recreated with the original members of Cold Blooded as well as Los Yesterdays\, a younger duo consisting of Chicano members of LA’s burgeoning modern soul scene. Mercer dreams of recapturing some of the freedom of her youth by performing from her catalog for a large community of British Northern Soul fans at a reunion in Detroit.  \nRe-accessing their best creative selves\, the two stories bookend interviews and discussions with noted local Jackson Black musical excellence about local musical pedagogy\, the role of the Church in popular music and the former power and glory of juke joints and their contribution to musicianship.  \nThroughout the film\, Howard and Barbara set the tempo\, voicing ideas around belonging\, love and freedom\, foregrounded by a dreamlike accompaniment of the Jacksonian landscape of kudzu and cotton fields. You’re the Life of Me is a love letter to Jackson\, a gentle reminder of the intrinsic connections between community and the art it creates\, and a response to the tension between America’s love for Black culture but not Black people. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents BEING THERE
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Being There in Crosstown Theater.  \nCrosstown Theater\nThursday\, September 19\, 2024\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 pm | Film begins at 7:00 pm (sharp!) \nHal Ashby / 1979 / 130 minutes / Rated PG \nIn one of his most finely tuned performances\, Peter Sellers plays the pure-hearted\, childlike Chance\, a gardener who is forced into the wilds of Washington\, D.C.\, when his wealthy guardian dies. Shocked to discover that the real world doesn’t respond to the click of a remote\, Chance stumbles into celebrity after being taken under the wing of a tycoon (Melvyn Douglas\, in an Oscar-winning performance)\, who mistakes his protégé’s horticultural mumblings for sagacious pronouncements on life and politics\, and whose wife (Shirley MacLaine) targets Chance as the object of her desire. Adapted from a novel by Jerzy Kosinski\, this satire\, both deeply melancholy and hilarious\, is the culmination of Hal Ashby’s remarkable string of films in the 1970s\, and a carefully modulated examination of the ideals\, anxieties\, and media-fueled delusions that shaped American culture during that decade. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:Kafé Kirk: Kirk Whalum and Mindi Abair
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Kafé Kirk with Kirk Whalum and special guest Mindi Abair in Crosstown Theater. \nSunday\, September 8\, 2024\nCrosstown Theater\nDoors open at 5:30 pm | Show begins at 6 pm\nTickets: General Admission $59 (plus fees) \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nJoin Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, an ongoing jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This very special performance will feature saxophonist Mindi Abair. \nMINDI ABAIR\nTwo-time GRAMMY nominee Mindi Abair is a saxophonist\, vocalist\, and author of “How To Play Madison Square Garden.” You might know her as the featured saxophonist on American Idol\, or from touring and/or recording with Aerosmith\, Duran Duran\, Gregg Allman\, Smokey Robinson\, and more. As a solo artist\, she has consistently topped the Contemporary Jazz and Blues charts\, earning her 1 st GRAMMY nomination in 2014 for Summer Horns and her 2 nd nomination in 2015 for her solo album Wild Heart. In 2019 she launched www.wineandjazz.com bringing together the worlds of wine and music through her wine club and worldwide adventures. \nKIRK WHALUM\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album.\nAs well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like\, Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nKirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards- Gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy nominee\, Kirk won his first Grammy award (2011)for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”—featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter\, Jerry Peters.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents MADE IN ENGLAND
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents a screening of Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger in Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater\nThursday\, August 29\, 2024\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 pm | Films begin at 7:00 pm (sharp!) \nDavid Hinton / 2024 / 131 minutes / Not Rated \nMartin Scorsese first encountered the films of Powell and Pressburger when he was a child\, sitting in front of the family TV. When their famous logo came up on screen\, Scorsese says\, “You knew you were in for fantasy\, wonder\, magic – real film magic.” Now\, in this documentary\, he tells the story of his lifelong love-affair with their movies\, including The Life and Death Of Colonel Blimp\, Black Narcissus\, The Red Shoes and The Tales of Hoffmann. \n“Certain films you simply run all the time and you live with them.” Scorsese says. “As you grow older they grow deeper. I’m not sure how it happens\, but it does. For me\, that body of work is a wondrous presence\, a constant source of energy\, and a reminder of what life and art are all about.” Drawing on a rich array of archive material\, Scorsese explores in full the collaboration between the Englishman Powell and the Hungarian Pressburger – two romantics and idealists\, who thrived in the face of adversity during World War II but were eventually brought low by the film industry of the 1950s. Scorsese celebrates their ability to create “subversive commercial movies” and describes how deeply their films have influenced his own work.” \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents RETURN TO REASON: THE SHORT FILMS OF MAN RAY
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents a screening of Return to Reason: The Short Films of Man Ray in Crosstown Theater. \nCrosstown Theater\nThursday\, August 22\, 2024\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 pm | Films begin at 7:00 pm (sharp!) \nMan Ray / 2023 / 70 minutes / Not Rated \nThe four films Man Ray directed between 1923 and 1929\, Le Retour à la raison\, Emak-Bakia\, L’Étoile de mer and Les Mystères du Château du Dé represent a high watermark of early European avant-garde cinema\, a seminal nexus of experimental technique\, surrealist narrative\, and playful abstraction as suffused with dark eroticism. In these films Ray began discovering the limitless possibilities of montage as well as the direct application onto celluloid of objects such as salt\, pepper\, pins\, and thumbtacks. Juxtaposing undulating geometric patterns\, a twirling fairground ride\, and a female nude\, among other striking images\, Ray finds subconscious correspondences among seemingly incongruous materials and figures. In celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Le Retour à la raison\, the Jim Jarmusch-Carter Logan combo Sqürl present Man Ray: Return to Reason\, with a newly-recorded drone rock soundtrack for that title as well as the three other Ray films. The band’s cosmic sounds complement Ray’s work by conjuring the beautiful\, ineffable\, haunting\, and sublime. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.
