This month’s guests: Kortland and Kameron Whalum. \nDoors at 5 pm | performance at 6 pm \nGeneral admission tickets — $45\nVIP tickets (includes a meet-and-greet and free CD) — $60 \n\nAbout Kirk Whalum:\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring … these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his.The 80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene — especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first No. 1 album. Kirk and Bob also received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. \nAfter moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones\, and\, most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date. Others include his eclectic\, and much-lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar).

DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Weekly Film Series is an arthouse-style film series showcasing a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp.\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \nLADIES AND GENTLEMEN\, THE FABULOUS STAINS (NARRATIVE\, 1982)  \nLadies and Gentlemen\, The Fabulous Stains is the story of Corinne Burns (Diane Lane)\, a  recently orphaned 17-year-old girl whose life is almost instantly changed through a happenstance interview with the local news. Corinne attends a concert to self-promote her band The Stains\, which is made up of her\, her sister\, and cousin. The Stains end up going on tour\, radically changing their look and proclaiming on stage\, “We’re the Stains\, and we don’t put out.” \nAlong the way\, the girls get famous\, manipulate the pre-internet news media in their favor (for a moment at least) and steal a song and sound from their less interesting male tour mates.  Featuring appearances by Steve Jones and Paul Cook of The Sex Pistols and Paul Simonon from the Clash\, Ladies and Gentlemen\, The Fabulous Stains was a box-office failure but gained a large cult following on late-night cable television. \nWatch the trailer

The Blueshift Ensemble features several accomplished Memphis musicians\, including Director Jenny Davis (flute) and Jonathan Kirkscey (cello). Jonathan is an accomplished film composer\, whose credits include acclaimed documentaries Best of Enemies: Buckley vs. Vidal and Won’t You Be My Neighbor. The found film footage is used with the kind permission of the Memphis Public Library & Information Center and the personal collections of several Memphians.

Amidst the racial tension in New York City\, this Jewish Ivy League graduate and black Mississippi blues man made an unlikely pair\, but their musical stylings perfectly aligned. \nAfter a chance encounter with members of U2 and a celebrated debut record\, the duo rose to international acclaim from their Harlem street corner. Stop by Art Bar and have a drink before the show. \n\nPierre Primetens \nPierre Primetens is an author and documentary filmmaker and has directed such titles as the autobiographical trilogy Un voyage au Portugal (A Trip to Portugal)\, Des vacances à l’Ile Maurice (A Journey in Mauritus)\, and Contre toi (Against You) about his estrangement from his mother’s family and their eventual reconciliation.  His latest documentary\, La fête des garçons (The Boys Ritual)\, is about a rite of passage in a remote village of northern Portugal. His movies have been presented in many French and international film festivals and broadcast on European television. He creates radio documentaries\, writes television screenplays\, serves on several cinema committees and leads screenplay\, film study\, and directing workshops. He is currently writing his first fictional feature film. \n“My sense of observation and an almost scientific rigor are essential in carrying out my projects.  I alternate between different working formats: I go to the site where I wish to film and observe the lifestyles of the residents there from an anthropological point of view\, complemented by periods of writing where I build a fictional narrative based on what I have observed and the material I’ve collected.” \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPierre Primetens will be screening: \nA TRIP TO PORTUGAL\nMy mother died when I was five years old. My father never spoke to me about her. Last year\, my mother’s family\, who is Portuguese\, tracked me down. I’m on my way to Portugal to see them\, for the first time in 20 years. \nHALF-BLOOD\nco-directing with Laetitia Mikles\nFranck heals horses with his hands. With his children\, he is loving and playful. With horses\, he is patient and delicate. But when it comes to talking to Zita\, he clams up. \n\nMatteo Servante \nItalian by birth and Memphian by choice\, Matteo Servente has been making independent films for more than 15 years. After studying in Italy\, France\, and Australia\, he moved to the US in 2008 and has since directed award-winning short films and documentaries. Matteo’s current projects include a narrative feature film called Nessun Dorma (No One Sleeps)\, a magical-realistic drama about a 10-year-old boy who drives across state lines in a stolen Trans-Am searching for a mermaid\, and the documentary A Legacy Suspended\, about his work with The Lynching Sites Project of Memphis. He is also involved in youth education as an elementary teacher and mentor for young filmmakers. \n“Making films is not only a wonderful opportunity but also a great privilege. Doing it in Memphis makes it a big responsibility.” \n \nMatteo Servante will be screening: \nDAMMI IL LA \nThe lives of three very different people become interwoven when Pietro stops what he’s been doing\, comes down off of his stilts\, breaks down\, and has to be put back together by Marguerite. \nWE GO ON\nTwo old gents whose numbers have been called up yonder are in hospice care. Their conversations ricochet around like a shootout in a fantasy factory\, as they both relish the last communication left to them.

DESCRIPTION:John Kilzer album release concert with John Kilzer\, Matt Ross-Spang (acoustic guitar)\, Steve Selvidge (guitar)\, Steve Potts (drums)\, Dave Smith (bass guitar)\, & Rick Steff (keys).\n\n\nTickets are $30 (purchase on Eventbrite) \n\nAbout John Kilzer:\nIn disparate but somehow related ways\, John Kilzer is a virtual Renaissance man whose talent is one of remarkable breadth\, a reflection of his intellect and deep-seated soulfulness. \nBeyond Memphis\, where he’s long resided\, having moved there from Jackson TN (home of Carl Perkins)\, the national music community became aware of him in the late 1980s when he was signed to Geffen Records. In the intervening years\, he’s recorded a number of albums for both major and indie labels and has written songs that have been recorded and released by Roseanne Cash\, Trace Adkins\, Dobie Gray and Maria Muldaur\, among others. While he’s an accomplished musical entity\, it should be noted that he’s been an athlete\, a star forward for the Memphis State Tigers. At Memphis State he not only earned a Masters degree in English literature but also taught the subject full time for three years.

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation\, filmmaker Lance Bangs will present a program of Daydream Nation-related films on January 11th. After the screening\, local Grammy Award-winning writer and filmmaker Robert Gordon will moderate a Q&A with Bangs and Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley. \nThe program will include a Put Blood In The Music documentary excerpt  from 1989 (a new restoration). Lance Bangs will also present excerpts from his new concert film of the band performing the album in its entirety in Glasgow in 2007. The album was an immediate critical success. Lance Bangs’ new Sonic Youth concert film Daydream Nation presents the band performing the double album in Glasgow in August 2007. Bangs blends HD footage shot in Glasgow with fragments of personal Super8mm and 16mm from his archives of Sonic Youth over the decades. \n\nSonic Youth released their sixth album Daydream Nation on October 18\,1988. The album was an immediate critical success. Robert Palmer wrote in Rolling Stone that it “presents the definitive American guitar band of the Eighties at the height of its powers and prescience.” Time has not dimmed the album’s luster: It was selected to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry in 2005 and in 2013 Consequence of Sound declared “the record simply rules.”

Tenacious. Loyal. Those are just three words one would use to capture the essence of David Edwards. A native of Kansas City\, Kansas\, he’s been deemed a musical genius. He has always had a vivid interest in music. From a very young age\, he was captivated by the melodic lines\, rhythmic beats and the pulsating vocals of artists like Lauryn Hill\, Karen Clark Sheard\, and John P. Kee. It would prove to be an interest that would provoke Edwards to stay on a musical course and find his voice. His divine path ultimately led him to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. From there\, he would continue finding his voice while living his dream in Memphis\, Tennessee — a city known for its eclectic mix of blues\, gospel\, rock\, pop\, and soul music.\n\n\n \n\n\nIn July 2011\, Edwards obtained his Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Phoenix. At the present\, he is making an impact on young scholars as the Music and Voice Instructor at KIPP: Memphis Collegiate Middle School. For the past seven years\, Edwards has lead the charge as the Praise and Worship Leader at the historic Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church in Memphis each week\, creating an atmosphere for the people of God to draw closer to His presence. Edwards is an advocate for the youth and a connoisseur of music.
