SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse Presents Delinquency in Cinema: FREDERICK WISEMAN’S JUVENILE COURT
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. This week: JUVENILE COURT \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp.\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \nOriginally released in 1973 and made by acclaimed documentary film maker Frederick Wiseman\, JUVENILE COURT shows the complex variety of cases before the Memphis Juvenile Court: foster home placement\, drug abuse\, armed robbery\, child abuse\, and sexual offenses. The sequences illustrate such issues as community protection vs. the desire for rehabilitation\, the range and the limits of the choices available to the court\, the psychology of the offender\, and the constitutional and procedural questions involved in administering a juvenile court. Come see how horrible the Memphis juvenile “justice” system was in the 1970s\, and then lament how absolutely nothing has changed! \nFilm makers Joann Self Selvidge and Sarah Fleming will be at the screening to share information about their currently in-production documentary Juvenile\, which tells the stories of people who’s lives have been touched by the juvenile justice system. SUMMARY:Kafé Kirk with special guest Jonathan Butler
DESCRIPTION:Join Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, a monthly jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This month’s guest: Jonathan Butler\, Grammy-winning contemporary jazz musician from South Africa. \nDoors at 5 pm | performance at 6 pm \nGeneral admission tickets — $45\nVIP tickets (includes a meet-and-greet and free CD) — $60 \n\nAbout Kirk Whalum:\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring … these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his.The 80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene — especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first No. 1 album. Kirk and Bob also received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. \nAfter moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones\, and\, most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date. Others include his eclectic\, and much-lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nAbout Jonathan Butler:\nThe youngest of 13 children\, Jonathan Butler grew up in Cape Town\, South Africa\, ruled by Apartheid and segregation. Butler began his singing career at age 7\, releasing his first album in 1973 and winning the Best New Artist Grammy in South Africa the following year at age 12. He made history by being the first black artist played on white South African radio while earning three gold records (“Please Stay” went double gold and “I Love How You Love Me” went gold) in 1975 as he became a teenager. \nMore than a decade later\, Butler moved to London\, England after signing with Jive Records and released his first album internationally. The self-titled set went gold in 1987 in the United Kingdom and in the USA. He received Grammy nominations for Best R&B Song for his R&B-pop vocal hit “Lies” and for Best Jazz Song for the instrumental “Going Home.” His genre-busting material earned songwriter’s awards and received abundant airplay in multiple radio formats: pop\, urban\, contemporary jazz\, adult contemporary and gospel. Butler’s 2004 album\, Surrender\, went gold in South Africa where he remains a superstar. \nHe launched the Jonathan Butler Foundation in his native country to fund music education programs that give children the purpose to overcome a life of drugs and poverty just as he did. The music and arts programs serving South African children ages 4-17 operate with the mission statement\, “Purpose kills addiction.”

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Weekly Film Series: American Pop
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Weekly Film Series is an arthouse-style film series showcasing a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp.\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \nAMERICAN POP (NARRATIVE\, 1981) \nRalph Bakshi produced and directed this sweeping animated story of four generations of a Russian Jewish immigrant family all trying to make it in the music business. American Pop incorporates most of what made Bakshi famous\, including rotoscoping\, primitive computer graphics\, live-action film\, archival film\, and still paintings. \nThe soundtrack is almost one million licensing dollars worth of classic rock that\, much of the time\, is incongruent with Bakshi’s imagery – most especially in the penultimate scene when a drug-dealing\, songwriting member of the family plays “Night Moves” to get the attention of the musicians and producers he was providing drugs to. With Lee Ving of FEAR as “Punk Rocker #1” – CAN’T MISS!!! \nWatch the trailer

SUMMARY:Citizen Cope
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a concert by soul singer-songwriter Citizen Cope on the Kemmons Wilson Family Stage at Crosstown Theater on Tuesday\, June 18. \nDoors at 7 pm | performance at 8 pm\nTickets: $41 — purchase on Eventbrite\n$1 from each ticket sale will be donated to charity \nAbout Citizen Cope’s latest album\, Heroin & Helicopters:\nAsk him how he knew it was time to record a new studio album\, and Clarence Greenwood\, the trailblazing artist and producer better known as Citizen Cope\, has a simple answer: “It was time.” \nCope has built an entire career on trusting his gut and following his muse\, and if his new album\, ‘Heroin & Helicopters\,’ is any indication\, his instincts are sharper now than ever before. As technically innovative as it is emotionally resonant\, the record arrives at a uniquely challenging moment in modern American culture\, when profound political polarization and social divisions seem to grow deeper by the day. Rather than dwell on our differences\, though\, Cope tunes in to what unites us here\, drawing on everything from Chuck Brown and The Beatles to Randy Newman and Bill Withers\, aiming his unique brand of urban-folk inwards to reflect on the personal journeys we all undertake to embrace ourselves despite our flaws. \nWhile ‘Heroin & Helicopters’ feels particularly timely\, the record’s themes have been fixtures of Cope’s music since the release of his self-titled debut in 2002. That album was the culmination of years of pursuing his passion. Cope got his musical start in DC before moving to Brooklyn\, where he wrote songs while supporting himself on the streets\, buying and selling concert and sporting tickets with a cast of characters outside arenas and stadiums. His music spread from fan-to-fan via word of mouth\, and over the course of time his songs have become the soundtrack of his fans lives.

SUMMARY:Kafé Kirk at Crosstown Theater
DESCRIPTION:Join Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, a monthly jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This month’s guests: Kortland and Kameron Whalum.

Tenacious. Loyal. Those are just three words one would use to capture the essence of David Edwards. A native of Kansas City\, Kansas\, he’s been deemed a musical genius. He has always had a vivid interest in music. From a very young age\, he was captivated by the melodic lines\, rhythmic beats and the pulsating vocals of artists like Lauryn Hill\, Karen Clark Sheard\, and John P. Kee. It would prove to be an interest that would provoke Edwards to stay on a musical course and find his voice. His divine path ultimately led him to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. From there\, he would continue finding his voice while living his dream in Memphis\, Tennessee — a city known for its eclectic mix of blues\, gospel\, rock\, pop\, and soul music.\n\n\n \n\n\nIn July 2011\, Edwards obtained his Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Phoenix. At the present\, he is making an impact on young scholars as the Music and Voice Instructor at KIPP: Memphis Collegiate Middle School. For the past seven years\, Edwards has lead the charge as the Praise and Worship Leader at the historic Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church in Memphis each week\, creating an atmosphere for the people of God to draw closer to His presence. Edwards is an advocate for the youth and a connoisseur of music. He aspires to open his own school for gifted and talented students in the area of music.\n\n\n \n\n\nNot forsaking his own musical career ambitions\, Edwards’ musical talents have afforded him the opportunity to share the stage with some of the most amazing figures in the Gospel Music industry today\, such as multiple award winning artists\, Maurette Brown Clark\, Dorinda Clark Cole\, Smokie Norful\, Donnie McClurkin and Vashawn Mitchell.\n\n\n\nAbout Strictly Jazz:\nStrictly Jazz Entertainment is committed to cultivating a growing community in the knowledge and appreciation of jazz. We facilitate dialogue and collaboration between the devoted supporters of jazz and the brand new constituents – those new to the genre – for the furthering of the jazz community. We provide a bridge between leading artists and a community that typically does not embrace jazz by promoting concerts in various venues to generate an atmosphere that is viable for the absorption of pure jazz.
