DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp.\nTickets are $10 (at the door only) \nDouble feature with HAXAN (1922) and a live score by 1000 LIGHTS\, followed by a screening of DEEP RED (1975). \nHAXAN (1922): Grave robbing\, torture\, possessed nuns\, and a satanic Sabbath: Benjamin Christensen’s legendary silent film HAXAN uses a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the Middle Ages and early modern era suffered from the same ills as psychiatric patients diagnosed with hysteria in the film’s own time. Far from a dry dissertation on the topic\, the film itself is a witches’ brew of the scary\, the gross\, and the darkly humorous. Christensen’s mix-and-match approach to genre anticipates gothic horror\, documentary re-creation\, and the essay film\, making for an experience unlike anything else in the history of cinema. \nIs 1000 LIGHTS a post punk band? A proto-punk band? A goth band? A band of Memphis’ heaviest hitters? All of the above? Meet A Thousand Lights. Guitarist Joey Killingsworth (Jocephus and the George Jonestown Massacre\, Super Witch\, Grendel Crane\, Static Bombs)\, drummer Russ Thompson (The Margins\, Static Bombs\, New Intruders\, Pisshorse)\, bassist Chris McCoy (Super Witch\, Static Bombs\, New Intruders\, Pisshorse)\, and vocalist Jesse James Davis (Yesse Yavis\, Model Zero) owe their partnership to the Memphis Does Bowie benefit show. Thompson\, who has been a musical partner with McCoy since their days in the legendary 90s art punk band Pisshorse\, sat in with McCoy and Killingsworth’s metal juggernaut Super Witch to cover the Bowie classics “Scary Monsters and Super Creeps\,” “Cat People\,” and “It Ain’t Easy.” Davis\, dressed as Low-era Bowie\, brought the house down fronting Winchester and the Ammunition. Memphis Does Bowie raised more than $20\,000 for Memphis area charities. In 2017\, Killingsworth\, Thompson\, and McCoy were playing together in the death rock project Static Bombs when the trio tapped Davis for a pair of shows: Gimmie Shelter\, a benefit for homeless charities that saw Memphis musicians paying tribute to the Rolling Stones; and a slot at Memphis’ hottest Halloween party\, hosted by Black Lodge Video\, where the band\, joined by saxophonist Seth Moody\, performed The Stooges Funhouse album in its entirety. These shows were such a raging success that the group decided to make it permanent\, renaming themselves A Thousand Lights\, after a line from The Stooges’ “Down On The Street.”  As you can tell from the choices of artists they paid tribute to\, A Thousand Lights sound is slippery and diverse\, incorporating elements from the earliest days of punk and post punk that bands like Bauhaus\, Siouxsie and the Banshees\, and Love and Rockets synthesized into goth rock.  Their debut EP “3nc EP” is available now on iTunes & Spotify.  \nSECOND FEATURE: DEEP RED (1975): 4K restoration! From Dario Argento\, the man behind some the greatest excursions in Italian horror (SUSPIRIA\, THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE\, THE CAT O’ NINE TAILS)\, comes DEEP RED: arguably the ultimate giallo. Aided by a throbbing score from legendary proggers Goblin\, this hallucinatory fever dream is punctuated by some of the most expert setpieces the genre has to offer. One lonely night\, musician Marcus Daly (David Hemmings\, BLOW UP)\, looks up from the plaza below and witnesses the brutal axe murder of a woman in her apartment. Racing to the scene\, Marcus just misses the perpetrator — or does he? As he takes on the role of amateur sleuth\, Marcus ensnares himself in a bizarre web of murder and mystery where nothing is what it seems. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp.\nTickets are $10 (at the door only) \nDouble feature with THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE (1921) and a live piano accompaniment by Maeve Brophy\, followed by a screening of SECOND FEATURE: GANJA & HESS (1973). \nTHE PHANTOM CARRIAGE (1921): The last person to die on New Year’s Eve before the clock strikes twelve is doomed to take the reins of Death’s chariot and work tirelessly\, collecting fresh souls for the next year. So says the legend that drives THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE (Körkarlen)\, directed by the father of Swedish cinema\, Victor Sjöström. The story\, based on a novel by Nobel Prize winner Selma Lagerlöf\, concerns an alcoholic\, abusive ne’er-do-well (Sjöström himself) who is shown the error of his ways\, and the pure-of-heart Salvation Army sister who believes in his redemption. This extraordinarily rich and innovative silent classic (which inspired Ingmar Bergman to make movies) is a Dickensian ghost story and a deeply moving morality tale\, as well as a showcase for groundbreaking special effects. \nMAEVE BROPHY gave her first solo piano recital at age 9 and made her orchestral debut at 15. She has given solo and collaborative performances in Wells\, England; the Amalfi Coast; Kiev\, Ukraine; New York; San Francisco; Seattle; Aspen; Nashville; and Memphis. She has performed for the Memphis Chamber Music Society and the Artist Ascending Series in Memphis and is a regular performer with the Luna Nova Ensemble. Maeve has performed as soloist with the Chernygev Symphony in Kiev as well as the Paducah Symphony and the Central Florida Philharmonic. She has a BA from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Music in Piano Performance from Texas Christian University. She also studied at the Manhattan School of Music and at the New England Conservatory of Music with Russell Sherman. She has worked as a freelance accompanist in Memphis and played for numerous student recitals at the University of Memphis. She has taught students privately as well as at the Boston College of Adult Education. \nSECOND FEATURE: GANJA & HESS (1973): Flirting with the conventions of blaxploitation and horror\, Bill Gunn’s revolutionary independent film GANJA & HESS is a highly stylized and utterly original treatise on sex\, religion\, and African American identity. Duane Jones (Night of the Living Dead) stars as anthropologist Hess Green\, who is stabbed with an ancient ceremonial dagger by his unstable assistant (director Bill Gunn)\, bestowing upon him the blessing of immortality … and the curse of an unquenchable thirst for blood. When the assistant’s beautiful and outspoken wife Ganja (Marlene Clark) comes searching for her missing husband\, she and Hess form an unexpected partnership. Together\, they explore just how much power blood holds. Later recut and released in an inferior version\, this edition represents the original release\, restored by The Museum of Modern Art with support from The Film Foundation\, and mastered in HD from a 35mm negative.

DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp.\nTickets are $10 (at the door only) \nDouble feature with THE UNHOLY THREE and a live score by BLUESHIFT ENSEMBLE\, followed by a screening of NIGHT OF THE HUNTER \nTHE UNHOLY THREE was Tod Browning’s first shot at telling the story of three sideshow performers who grow sick of living the impoverished life they lead and hatch a plan to get rich. Tweedledee (Harry Earles) is a dwarf who disguises himself as a baby. Professor Echo\, a ventriloquist\, becomes Mrs. O’Grady — Tweedledee’s “grandmother.” Professor Echo’s girlfriend\, who is a pickpocket\, becomes his “granddaughter.”  Theft\, fake talking parrots\, murder\, ALMOST child murder\, circus strongmen\, and an unhinged pet ape!!!!  \nBLUESHIFT ENSEMBLE is a Memphis­-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi­-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. The ensemble draws upon Memphis’s uniquely diverse musical heritage by combining classical music with popular music genres such as rock\, blues\, soul\, and hip hop and featuring local musicians\, visual artists\, and composers. The astronomical term “blueshift” indicates an object’s moving closer toward the observer. Blueshift aims to bring concert music and art out of the concert hall and into the Memphis community. \nSECOND FEATURE: NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955)\nA tall\, handsome ‘preacher’ — his knuckles eerily tattooed with ‘love’ and ‘hate’ — roams the countryside\, spreading the gospel … and leaving a trail of murdered women in his wake. To Reverend Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum)\, the work of the Lord has more to do with condemning souls than saving them\, especially when his own interests are involved. Now his sights are set on $10\,000 — and two little children are the only ones who know where it is. ‘Chill…dren!’ the preacher croons to the terrified boy and girl hiding in the cold\, dark cellar … innocent young lambs who refuse to be led astray.

Most recently Wycliffe received the\n“Louie Award” honoring his dedication and commitment to the music of Louis\nArmstrong\, and received the International Trombone Association Award in 2017\,\nwhich recognizes the highest level of creative and artistic achievement. Can you imagine what that next record\, to be titled Revolver\, would have sounded like had it been recorded in Memphis? Would Otis Redding have added some background vocals? Would Booker T have played organ? What about the Memphis horns? \n\nSince The MD’s main goal is to keep the incredible catalog of Booker T & The MG’s music alive\, they have decided to try something a little different. With the utmost respect to Booker\, Steve\, Duck\, and Al\, they are going to perform Revolver as they think the MG’s would have in the ’60s. \nAbout The MD’s:\nThe only Booker T & the MG’s tribute band in the group’s hometown of Memphis\, TN. The film takes us backstage to kiki with the contestants as they rehearse\, throw shade\, and transform into their drag personas in the lead-up to the big event. Organized by LGBTQ icon and activist Flawless Sabrina\, the competition boasted a star-studded panel of judges including Andy Warhol\, Larry Rivers\, and Terry Southern.. But perhaps most memorable is an epic diatribe calling out the pageant’s bias delivered by Crystal LaBeija\, who would go on to form the influential House of LaBeija\, heavily featured in Paris Is Burning (1990). A vibrant piece of queer history\, The Queen can now be seen in full resplendence thanks to a new restoration from the original camera negative.

Opening act: Dean Alexander \nTickets: $30\nDoors at 7 pm | show at 8 pm \nAbout Todd Snider:\nOne morning near the end of August\, Todd Snider was relaxing with a visitor on the back porch of his house just outside Nashville\, drinking coffee and shooting the breeze while his dog\, Cowboy Jim\, took a nap nearby. After awhile\, Snider said to his guest\, “I’ve got an album’s worth of songs\, and I think the songs are telling me to make a folk record.” \nThis was a surprising bit of news considering he had spent the last six years making rock albums of one kind or another. But Snider was feeling as if he had “maybe drifted too far from the shore.” He was feeling the pull to start over\, to go back to what he was doing when he first began\, to return to his roots as a folksinger. \nIf Snider needed any further evidence that was the direction he should pursue\, he got it a half hour later. Back inside his home office\, he checked his email and had one from his manager informing him he had just received an offer to play the 2019 Newport Folk Festival\, an event he had never done. \nSnider mentioned he had been listening to Woody Guthrie’s Library of Congress Recordings\, then crossed the room to the turntable and put the needle down on side one of the record. “Woody Guthrie sometimes gets me reset on why you do a song\, instead of how\,” Snider explains of the man who has long been a touchstone for him. “When I was young\, there was something about him that made me want to do it. So once or twice a year\, I’ll go back to him\, I’ll go back to the source.” \nGuthrie famously had the words “This machine kills fascists” printed on his guitar\, and on several of the songs on Snider’s new album\, Cash Cabin Sessions\, Vol. 3\, he squarely aims his guitar at the creeping fascism he sees in America. He had been wanting to make a political record since 2016\, and although only half the songs lean in that direction\, there is one constant throughout the album: a man\, his guitar\, and the truth.

The young student-athlete quickly excelled in both pursuits\, going on to attend the special performance arts school Escuela Libre de Musica at the age of thirteen and becoming one of the most noted young athletes on the island\, both as a track and field standout posting record times in the 400 meters\, as well as one of Puerto Rico’s most sought after young baseball prospects. Bernie was signed by the New York Yankees after high school in 1987. After working his way through the farm system\, the switch-hitting Williams made his Major League debut with the Yankees in May\, 1991. \nIn his 16-year career patrolling centerfield for the New York Yankees\, Bernie Williams was a four-time World Series Champion and a five-time All Star. Williams has more post-season RBIs to his credit than any other player in Major League history and his resume also boasts four Gold Glove awards\, six American League pennants\, the 1996 ALCS MVP award\, and the 1998 American League batting title. Bernie is also among the Yankees all-time leaders in every major batting category\, with his performance statistics often standing alongside such legetnds as Babe Ruth\, Mickey Mantle\, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio. On May\, 24\, 2015\, the Yankees retired Bernie’s uniform number 51 and a plaque was dedicated and placed in Monument Park in Yankee Stadium\, cementing his legacy as an all-time Yankee great.  \nThroughout Williams’ years with the Yankees\, his passion for music never waned\, and the sound of his guitar would often be heard emanating from the clubhouse or during team flights. Whether acoustic or electric\, a guitar was a constant presence in the star’s locker or equipment bag\, and it was no surprise when he demonstrated how serious his musical pursuit was with the release of his first album\, The Journey Within in 2003. The record featured fusions of jazz\, rock and the tropical rhythms of Williams’ Latin heritage and was met with both strong critical praise and instant chart success- reaching #3 on Billboard’s “Contemporary Jazz Chart.” \nBernie Williams raised his musical game even further with the release of his second album Moving Forward. Featuring guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen\, Jon Secada\, Dave Koz\, and an All-Star cast of renowned studio musicians\, Moving Forward debuted as Billboard’s #2 Contemporary Jazz album in the country\, and continued to hold that chart position for five straight weeks\, and spawned two consecutive Billboard #1 singles\, Go For It\, and Ritmo de Otono. The album was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Album in 2009.  \nIn addition to performing at concert venues\, music festivals\, and special events\, since the release of Moving Forward\, Bernie spent considerable time authoring his first book\, Rhythms of the Game: The Link Between Music and Athletic Performance\, published by Hal Leonard Books and released in July 2011. The book examines the symbiotic relationship between musical artistry and athletic performance through the eyes of a man who has mastered both.  \nBernie is an active crusader for arts and music education in the lives of all students\, and is a national spokesman for the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Foundation’s SupportMusic Coalition\, which unites non-profit organizations\, schools\, and businesses working to assure that music education is supported in communities everywhere\, and that all children have the opportunity to learn and grow with music. He has met with leaders of Congress on Capitol Hill for years lobbying to ensure that arts and music become part of a core education in our schools across the United States.  \nIn 2015\, he was appointed a Turnaround Arts artist by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities in partnership with the White House\, and U.S. Department of Education. Turnaround Arts brings arts education programs and supplies to a group of the lowest-performing elementary and middle schools in the country. These resources help schools improve attendance\, parent engagement\, student motivation\, and academic achievement. \nOn May 13\, 2016\, Williams graduated from the Manhattan School of Music\, in New York\, NY\, a prestigious music conservatory in New York\, NY\, receiving a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance.  \nIn 2017\, Bernie became the national spokesperson for Breathless\, an educational awareness campaign for Ideopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF)\, a mysterious lung disease that took the life of Bernie’s father Bernabe Sr.\, and still has no cure. He has been touring the country visiting many cities\, Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball ballparks\, and speaking at major medical conferences to spread the word about the disease that affects up to 132\,000 people and their families per year.  \nOn June 13\, 2019\, Bernie became “Dr. Williams”\, as he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the State University of New York through SUNY Potsdam and the world- renowned Drake School of Music\, considered the “birthplace of music education”. DESCRIPTION:Come join us at Crosstown Theater as we celebrate the works of composers of African descent from around the world. \nFeaturing rhythms from gospel to jazz\, the serene to classical influences\, there is something for everyone. Featuring award-winning artists James Rodriguez (baritone)\, Gwendolyn Alfred (soprano)\, Alisa Horn (cello) and Artina McCain (Piano). \nDoors 7 pm | Performance 7:30 pm\nGeneral Admission $12 | $5 at door with Student ID \nAbout the performers:\nDescribed as a pianist with “power and finesse” (Dallas Arts Society)\, Artina McCain enjoys an international career throughout Europe\, China and the US as a solo and chamber performer\, pedagogue\, and speaker. McCain’s solo and chamber performances have been heard on radio shows in Chicago\, Austin\, Toronto\, and Hong Kong. An American Prize winner for her solo piano recordings\, she will release an album of works entitled “Heritage: The American Composer” on the MSR label. She has won performance awards from the Austin Critics Table for the “Black Composers” Concert Series and is a three-time Global Music Awards winner for the album I\, Too (Naxos)\, Shades\, and Trombone Czar with husband and bass trombonist\, Martin McCain. Dr. McCain is currently an Assistant Professor of Piano at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music at the University of Memphis and co-artistic director of the Memphis International Piano Festival and Competition. \nGwendolyn Alfred\, DMA\, Assistant Professor of Voice\, Area Coordinator\, Texas Southern University is an educator and professional vocalist. She recently premiered a newly commissioned opera for Houston Grand Opera which landed her in the prestigious Texas Monthly magazine. Her most recent solo debuts were with the Houston Symphony\, Houston Civic Symphony\, and the Fort Bend Symphony. Alfred was honored as a Living Legend of Southeast Texas specifically for her outstanding leadership in the music field. \nPraised for his “authoritative and rich baritone\,” James D. Rodriguez most recently performed and co-hosted the Carnegie Hall Linkup Concerts with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and sang the baritone solos in Handel’s Messiah with the San Antonio Symphony. He made his Opera in the Heights debut in the role of Tonio (Pagliacci) and was part of the holiday Spanish concert series\, ConciertOh! de Invierno. Other notable roles include Escamillo (Carmen)\, Figaro (Il Barbiere di Siviglia)\, Dandini (La Cenerentola)\, Harlekin (Ariadne auf Naxos)\, Belcore (L’Elisir d’Amore)\, Captain Magallanes (Salsipuedes)\, Rappaccini (La Hija de Rappaccini)\, and the title roles in Don Giovanni and Rigoletto with such companies as Des Moines Metro Opera\, Opera IOWA\, Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre\, Opera Theater of Pittsburgh\, the Natchez Festival of Music\, and the Moores Opera Center. Concert appearances include Beethoven’s 9th Symphony\, Fauré’s Requiem\, Orff’s Carmina Burana\, Carlisle Floyd’s Pilgrimage\, Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen\, and Stainer’s Crucifixion. He regularly performs solo recitals\, most recently with Austin Chamber Music Center\, Phil Kramer Recital Series (Houston)\, Memorial Classic Music Series (Houston)\, and Coe College Music Department (Iowa). He was a finalist in the Concorso Lirica International Competition and the first place winner in the Texas Young Artist Vocal Competition. \nAlisa Horn is a freelance cellist and loves performing and teaching a wide variety of musical genres from classical to jazz to rock and beyond. A native of Memphis\, Tennessee\, Alisa has performed as soloist with orchestra playing pieces by Miaskovsky\, Bloch\, Dvorak\, Bruch\, and Elgar. She was a winner of the WAMSO-Young Artist Solo Competition and a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago\, the training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony. Alisa has attended many music festivals including Aspen Music Festival\, Boston University Tanglewood Institute\, Meadowmount\, Sewanee Summer Music Center\, Henry Mancini Institute\, Newport Jazz Festival (Rhode Island) \, and Newport Jazz Festival (Oregon). With pianist\, Jue He\, Alisa recorded the Rachmaninoff and Miaskovsky Sonatas and the duo was featured on McGraw-Hill Young Artist Showcase. Along with jazz legends Marvin Stamm and Bill Mays\, Alisa is a member of The Inventions Trio which performs a fusion of jazz and classical repertoire. The Trio has toured extensively and has released three albums including the diverse works of Bill Evans\, Bill Mays\, Heitor Villa-Lobos\, Claude Debussy\, and Miles Davis.

DESCRIPTION:National film and television shows (like the Hallmark “Graceland” films & Bluff City Law) have caught on to what an incredible place Memphis is to make their work.  For the September Shoot & Splice\, Sharon O’Guin (Deputy Film Commissioner for the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission) will talk about the hard work the Commission is doing behind the scenes to both bring national level productions to Memphis and assist local  film and television professionals.  Then hear some on-set experiences from some very talented Memphians\, including Kevin Brooks\, Kerri Mahoney and Jil Szewski – all three currently working on Bluff City Law. \nShoot & Splice is a monthly filmmaker forum presented collaboratively by Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts. \nFree and open to the public\nDoors at 6:30 pm | Presentation at 7 pm \nKEVIN BROOKS is a multi-talented film director\, writer\, cinematographer and editor.  As a senior in the University of Memphis Film Program\, Kevin was selected to participate in the Sundance Ignite program.  Kevin has since made several  short films and has won the Memphis Film Prize two years in a row.  Kevin serves as a board member at large for the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission.  Kevin is currently in pre-production for a feature and works on the set of Bluff City Law. \nKERRI MAHONEY is a multidisciplinary designer who has developed print\, interactive and product design projects since 1997.  Having a deep love for roots music\, Kerri has been working with the Ponderosa Stomp Foundation based in New Orleans\, LA since its inception to create marketing materials and merchandise for its annual concert\, held in New Orleans. Most recently\, she has been designing album art for clients such as Electraphonic Recording\, Fat Possum Records\, Big Legal Mess Records\, Modern Harmonic\, Amazon\, and Madjack Records.  In between making insanely great record covers\, Kerri works in the Art Department for Bluff City Law. \nSHARON O’GUIN is the Deputy Film Commissioner for the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission.  Founded in 1985 by joint City/County resolution\, The Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission is the official City/County economic development agency for film and television. The Commission Office works primarily to assist and/or recruit funded projects which will economically impact multiple sectors of the local community—local hires\, local vendors\, etc. \nJIL SZEWSKI is currently the Art Department Coordinator for Bluff City Law.  Jil has worked as an art department production coordinator for many television and film productions\, including Bluff City Law\, Truth Be Told\, Wedding At Graceland\, The Kids Are Alright\, How To Get Away with Murder\, Ballers\, Pitch\, Jean-Claude Van Johnson\, Ken Jeong Made Me Do It\, Whitney\, Rock My RV\, Only Lovers Left Alive and A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas.

This week: THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp.\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \nAmy Holden Jones turned down an editing job on E.T. to direct this movie. She made the right choice! Rita Mae Brown wrote the screenplay of THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE sometime between when she wrote the classic lesbian coming-of-age tale Rubyfruit Jungle and her long series of cat mystery novels. SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE was intended to be a commentary on the inherent sexism of the slasher genre but was filmed completely straight. THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE is a terrific inside joke that also delivers the goods as a skid row photocopy of HALLOWEEN\, complete with a killer who’s figuratively castrated when the tip of his power drill is hacked off.  With its stylized photography\, plot points involving pizza and an endlessly cool homemade synth score\, THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE is a drop-dead masterpiece of subversive trash-horror.

As one of the world’s most accomplished turntablists\, DJ Logic is widely credited for introducing jazz into the hip–hop realms and is considered by most as a highly-respected session musician and an innovative bandleader. \nDywane Thomas\, Jr. also known as MonoNeon\, is an American bassist and experimental musician. He is known for his presence on YouTube playing bass guitar and known for being one of the last people to work with Prince. Thomas also played with Grammy Award-winning R&B artist\, Ne-Yo\, on his fourth studio album. He is a native of Memphis\, Tennessee. \nAs the lead guitarist of Living Colour and a co-founder of the Black Rock Coalition\, Vernon Reid has done a great deal to undermine stereotypical expectations of what music black artists ought to play; his rampant eclecticism encompasses everything from hard rock and punk to funk\, R&B and avant-garde jazz\, and his anarchic\, lightning-fast solos have become something of a hallmark as well. \nDaru Jones is one of the most respected drummers of his generation. Born to two professional musicians\, he began playing the drums at the age of four. Though he got his start in the church\, Jones has been influenced by musicians from a wide range of genres. This week: BE NATURAL: THE UNTOLD STORY OF ALICE GUY-BLACHÉ  \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp.\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \nNarrated by Jodie Foster\, BE NATURAL: THE UNTOLD STORY OF ALICE GUY-BLACHÉ is a documentary about the first female filmmaker\, Alice Guy-Blaché\, which explores the heights of fame and financial success she achieved before she was shut out from the very industry she helped create. \nGuy-Blaché started her career as a secretary to Léon Gaumont and\, at 23\, was inspired to make her own film called La Fée aux Choux (The Cabbage Fairy)\, one of the first narrative films ever made. After her filmmaking career at Gaumont (1896-1907)\, she had a second decade-long career in the U.S.\, where she built and ran her own studio in Fort Lee\, N.J. \nOver the span of her career\, she wrote\, produced\, or directed 1\,000 films\, including 150 with synchronized sound during the silent film era. Her work includes comedies\, westerns\, and dramas\, as well as films with groundbreaking subject matter such as child abuse\, immigration\, Planned Parenthood\, and female empowerment. She also etched a place in history by making the earliest known surviving narrative film with an all-black cast. \nGreen has dedicated more than eight years of research in order to discover the real story of Alice Guy-Blaché (1873-1968)\, not only highlighting her pioneering contributions to the birth of cinema but also her acclaim as a creative force and entrepreneur in the earliest years of movie-making. Green interviewed Patty Jenkins\, Diablo Cody\, Ben Kingsley\, Geena Davis\, Ava DuVernay\, Michel Hazanavicius\, and Julie Delpy  to name a few. Green discovered rare footage of televised interviews and long-archived audio interviews which can be heard for the first time in Be Natural\, which affords Alice Guy-Blaché to tell her own story.

Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his.The 80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene — especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first No. 1 album. Kirk and Bob also received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. \nAfter moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones\, and\, most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date. Others include his eclectic\, and much-lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nAbout Michael Lington:\nGrowing up in Copenhagen\, Michael Lington remembers the precise moment he decided he needed to move to America if he was going to seriously pursue a career in music. He was still a budding musician at the time\, who loved several different genres: jazz\, pop\, R&B\, and more — as a young boy he’d even met the American swing legend Benny Goodman. But it wasn’t until he was on the verge of turning 20 that Lington—now recognized as one of the most creative and successful contemporary soul and jazz saxophonists in the world—made his fateful decision. \nImmersing himself in his favorite music — David Sanborn\, Michael Brecker\, King Curtis\, Hank Crawford\, Cannonball Adderley\, and Grover Washington — Michael started out on clarinet but soon found his true calling\, the saxophone. Already established in his homeland\, he made the move to the U.S. and began to grab a foothold in the music industry there. Eventually\, after much hard work\, his place within the American and international music scene came to him naturally. \nMichael Lington is releasing Silver Lining\, his 10th solo album\, the followup to 2016’s critically acclaimed Second Nature. Silver Lining features mostly original compositions by Lington and producer/co-arranger/keyboardist Barry Eastmond\, as well as a pair of stunning\, choice covers. \nSilver Lining begins with “City Life\,” one of three consecutives Eastmond/Lington compositions at the top of the track list. It features guitar from the legendary Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. Following the next two originals\, “Break the Ice” and “Déjà Vu\,” arrives the first interpretative piece on Silver Lining\, Curtis Mayfield’s classic\, timeless ballad “People Get Ready\,” which the late R&B icon recorded with the Impressions in 1965. To sing the song\, Lington recruited 2017 Grammy winner William Bell\, himself a soul legend who recorded for Memphis’ Stax Records back in its heyday. \nLington has learned much about business as his musical career progresses\, eventually leading him and his business partner\, Roy McClurg\, to launch his own record label\, Copenhagen Music\, in 2014. Lington is also an entrepreneur outside of music\, operating his own wine and cigar companies. He continues to tour\, performing as many as 80 concerts per year\, and has played in more than 40 countries\, working many of the world’s most prestigious venues. He’s even performed for a U.S. President.

Painting Blue is due out on August 16th on Nine Mile Records. \nTickets: $20\nDoors at 7 pm | show at 8 pm \n\nAbout Amy LaVere:\nThere’s something uniquely fun about Amy LaVere\, even when she’s breaking your heart. \n\nShe is well known among songwriters and critics alike. NPR’s Robert Siegel says she“specializes in lyrics that are more barbed than her sweet soprano prepares you for.” Her growing catalogue of material and steady critical acclaim suggest a first-tier presence on the Americana and indie-folk/punk circuits. Her latest album Painting Blue comes out August 16th on Nine Mile Records (Glorietta\, David Wax Museum\, Carson McHone\, Patrick Sweany\, Greyhounds). \nAmy’s live performances are anything but predictable. She might appear on stage with a full band\, sporting a mask and pink wig\, or simply be a natural in blue jeans and sandals\, but her upright bass and clever song delivery are constants. Her voice is at once the bully and the victim. She’s performed in venues as wide-ranging as St. Andrew’s Hall in London and Memphis’ famed dive bar Earnestine and Hazel’s. There’s no room she can’t find an audience in and charm it to pieces. \nBorn in Shreveport\, Louisiana\, this future bard moved continuously throughout childhood due to her father’s job. She spent notable parts of her life in Canada\, Texas\, Maryland\, Illinois\, Ohio and Michigan. Outside of Detroit and only just entering high school\, Amy formed her first band and began writing and performing.  Music fans first discovered this “sweet soprano” on This World is Not My Home in 2005\, but it was her Jim Dickinson-produced breakout album Anchors & Anvils two years later that put Amy LaVere on the map. Stranger Me\, the 2011 release on Archer Records\, was called “the break-up album of the year” by Spin. Paste said it was “among the year’s best\,” and it earned a first listen feature from NPR’s All Things Considered. She followed it in 2014 with another critical smash: Runaway’s Diary\, a concept album based on her own experience as a teenage runaway\, produced by Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars).  American Songwriter called it “boundary pushing… heartfelt\, reflective\, challenging and consistently compelling.” NPR Music’s Robert Christgau said it was her best yet.  Of Hallelujah I’m A Dreamer (Archer Records\, 2015) No Depression said simply: “pure bliss.” \nIn addition to her solo records and a tireless touring schedule\, Amy enjoys working with otherartists. In 2012 she joined an all-star collaboration called The Wandering\, composed of Amy\, Luther Dickinson\, Shannon McNally\, Sharde Thomas and Valerie June. They released Go On Now\, You Can’t Stay Here (Songs Of The South\, 2012) to critical acclaim and sold-out shows. \nIn the afterglow of The Wandering\, Amy and Shannon McNally hit the road together and released an EP titled Chasing the Ghost\, The Rehearsal Sessions (Archer Records\, 2012)\,  featuring songs from both artists recorded live during rehearsals for the tour. Amy next paired up with noted Memphis rocker John Paul Keith to create Motel Mirrors. Their styles clearly complemented one another\, which made for magic on stage and in the recording studio. Their eponymous vinyl EP release was named one of the “10 Essential Albums of 2013” by No Depression. In 2017 Motel Mirrors released a full length effort\, In the Meantime; this record had the addition of some Will Sexton co-writes and his powerful guitar work throughout. Motel Mirrors later released a live recording\, Gotta Lotta Rhythm\, on the Italian label Wild Honey. \nPainting Blue\, produced by her husband Will Sexton\, captures perfectly the moment that Amy is in. Will Sexton’s masterful production and Amy’s soft\, clarinet-like vocal pour over you\, pushing and pulling\, stirring and calming.  As we’ve come to expect\, this record is honest\, revealing and sounds uniquely like no one else.

Mookie is the pizza delivery man for Salvatore. Salvatore has owned his pizzeria for 25 years and seen a change from being a neighborhood made of Italian immigrants to one mostly inhabited by African American and Puerto Rican residents.  Salvatore loves the community but is rooted in his own traditions. The pizzeria features a Wall of Fame that only highlights Italians. The film really begins when neighborhood activist Buggin’ Out questions Salvatore as to why there are no pictures of black celebrities in a neighborhood made up almost entirely of black and brown people. Often cited as one of the greatest films ever made\, preserved by the Library of Congress in the National Film Registry\, DO THE RIGHT THING features Spike Lee himself as Mookie\, Rosie Perez\, Danny Aiello\, John Turturro\, and OSSIE DAVIS AND RUBY DEE!
