SUMMARY:Shoot & Splice: Creative Producing
DESCRIPTION:Many people assume that the role of a producer is only about finding money and selling a film. But what does it mean to be a creative producer? Join Indie Memphis & Crosstown Arts in a conversation with producers Tracee Comfort and Princeton Echols to find out why producing is one of the more misunderstood but creatively fulfilling roles in production. \nTopics will include how to manage a production\, casting\, story and script development\, working with a director\, and much more. \nFree and open to the public\nDoors at 6:30 pm | Presentation at 7 pm \nThis Shoot & Splice is presented by Indie Memphis\, Crosstown Arts\, and the Black Creators Forum at the Indie Memphis Film Festival. The heart of the Black Creators Forum is a two-day symposium of panels\, discussions\, and workshops for black filmmakers\, scholars\, and critics. The goal is to ease the barrier of entry for black artists who would like to work in film. The Forum also supports screenings\, meet-ups\, and artist support programs throughout the year\, including a free-for-all Pitch Rally during the festival.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents Blue Collar
DESCRIPTION:BLUE COLLAR was Paul Schrader’s debut as a director\, and making the movie reportedly literally drove him insane. BLUE COLLAR is a caper about three auto workers (Richard Pryor\, Harvey Keitel\, and Yaphet Kotto) who rob their union and unexpectedly uncover an illegal loan operation and ties to organized crime. BLUE COLLAR is about corruption\, the impossible grind of the working class\, powerlessness\, and most definitely\, the use of racial difference as a weapon by the oppressors against the oppressed. \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only)

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents The Harder They Come
DESCRIPTION:WITH A PIECE IN HIS HAND\, HE TAKES ON THE MAN! The epochal cultural moment that first brought reggae to the international stage\, made Jimmy Cliff a star\, and demonstrated how music can change the world. Fifty years on\, THE HARDER THEY COME is still electric with the feeling of discovery. This SCARFACE-y blend of crime drama and musical tracks Cliff’s country-boy-in-search-of-fame through Jamaica under the guises of laborer\, recording artist\, convict\, ganja dealer\, and outlaw folk hero. Before THE HARDER THEY COME\, the collective perception of a “foreign film” was limited to the Bergmans and the Kurosawas of the world. This game-changer forever blew those doors off — and it still hasn’t lost a drop of its cool\, its edge\, or its way of making you dance. — American Genre Film Archive — Perry Henzell/1972/109 minutes/Rated R \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only)

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents Time and Place
DESCRIPTION:Lee Moses (1941-1998)\, a music prodigy\, is considered one of the greatest unknown musicians among Baby Huey or Sixto Rodriguez (Sugar Man). He was part of a soul scene in Atlanta between the ’60s and the ’70s. His one album\, Time and Place (1971)\, did not take off. During his time in New York\, Moses played with greatest\, including Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. His music has now garnered a community of appreciation. Songs such as “Bad Girl” was used in the 2014 French film House of Tolerance\, and “If Loving You Is A Crime” was used in 2013 American film The Teacher. What makes his story remarkable is there’s not much to be found on Lee Moses. Even in his hometown of Atlanta\, there are no physical traces of him. The locations where Moses once performed no longer exist. TIME AND PLACE aims to connect the time of Lee Moses with the place Atlanta is becoming now.  Simon David/2019/76 minutes \nDirector Simon David will be available for a Q&A after the film. \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \n

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents A Trip to the Moon & Aelita: Queen of Mars with live score by Alex Greene & The Rolling Head Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Alex Greene & the Rolling Head Orchestra will present new musical scores for two silent science-fiction classics — A Trip to the Moon (Le Voyage dans la Lune)\, France\, 1902\, directed by Georges Méliès and based on the novel by Jules Verne AND Aelita: Queen of Mars (Аэли́та)\, Soviet Union\, 1924\, directed by Yakov Protazanov\, based on the novel by Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy. \nConsidered by many to be one of the greatest and most influential silent-era films ever made\, A TRIP TO THE MOON has turn-of-the-20th-century astronomers taking a proto-rocket to the moon and back to Earth. While on the moon\, they are attacked and captured by moon natives who turn out to be surprisingly easy to kill and out-maneuver. In a similar tale of Earthmen hurling themselves into the void of space\, AELITA: QUEEN OF MARS is a Russian silent film about a man who leaves his boring Earth wife behind to go to Mars and lead a revolution with the help of a Martian Queen named Aelita. These two silent-era classics will be live-scored by Alex Greene and The Rolling Head Orchestra! \nSoundtrack by Alex Greene\, 2019 resident composer at Crosstown Arts. Performed live by the Rolling Head Orchestra: Marc Franklin\, trumpet; Tim Goodwin\, bass and tuba; Alex Greene\, keyboards; Tom Lonardo\, drums; Jim Spake\, clarinets and saxophones; John Whittemore\, pedal steel\, vibrophones\, and guitar. With special guests: members of The Blueshift Ensemble and Kate Tayler Hunt\, theremin and synthesizer.

SUMMARY:Gamble Brothers Band & CYC at Crosstown Theater
DESCRIPTION:The Gamble Brothers Band and CYC join forces for a double bill reunion at Crosstown Theater. \nTickets: $25\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 8 pm \nAbout Gamble Brothers Band:\nThe Memphis-based Gamble Brothers Band formed in 2001\, released three albums\, and toured the U.S. with their guitar-less sound of R&B\, soul and rock. The four-piece band played their last show at Mud Island Amphitheater when they opened for the Black Crowes in fall of 2006. Those artists include Grammy-winning Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit\, the Gregg Allman Band\, JJ Grey and Mofro\, Marc Broussard\, St. Paul and the Broken Bones\, and more. \nAbout CYC:\nSeamlessly mixing funk\, rap\, metal\, and jazz\, CYC first made their name in Midtown coffee shops and beer joints\, and ended their run as late-night stalwarts on Beale. The band became a springboard for launching Memphis music internationally as CYC members have since toured and collaborated with Justin Timberlake\, Jay-Z\, Buddy Guy\, Gregg Allman\, Yo Gotti\, 8Ball & MJG\, Dr. John and many more. SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents Handsworth Songs
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \nIn October 1985\, Britain witnessed a spate of civil disturbances in the Birmingham district of Handsworth and in urban centers of London. These were violent\, tragic events\, marked by the death of an elderly black woman\, Joy Gardner\, and a white policeman\, Keith Blakelock . \nHANDSWORTH SONGS (BLACK AUDIO FILM COLLECTIVE/JOHN AKOMFRAH)/1986/58 minutes) takes as its point of departure these events and the inability of the British media to go beyond its concern with demonizing or rationalizing the rioters and their motives\, to break the anxiety-driven loop of morbid responses to the presence of blacks in Britain. \nHandsworth Songs explores the idea that the riots represented less a self-contained drama of rage with a single origin and trajectory than a multiplicity of issues\, ambivalences \, to do with race\, longing\, and belonging – not all of which could be shored up by recourse to a rhetoric of civil disorder. The film’s sense of multiplicity extends to a rethinking of black British presence and a refuting of the idea of a homogenous black community with a single sense of presence characterized by uniformity of ambition and expression. \nInstead the film evokes a broad range of voices\, tones\, registers. And it is through this panoply of positions and presences that Handsworth Songs approaches the riots and expresses its central idea — that it is not the riots in their dramatic unfolding\, nor even in the wake of their violent eruption\, which provide us with a route into the drama. \nHandsworth Songs contends that the meaning in the malaise is to be found in events outside the frame of contemporary reportage\, in moments which seemed to have little affective relation to the expressions of discontent which characterized the riots – in the annals of post war news reportage around race in Britain\, transformed in the film into an archive of black (un)belonging\, in the expression of hopes of belonging brutally deferred.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents Band of Outsiders
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \nFour years after Breathless\, Jean-Luc Godard reimagined the gangster film even more radically with BAND OF OUTSIDERS (Bande à part\, 1964\, 95 minutes). Two restless young men (Sami Frey and Claude Brasseur) enlist the object of both of their fancies (Anna Karina) to help them commit a robbery — in her own home. This audacious and wildly entertaining French New Wave gem is at once sentimental and insouciant\, effervescently romantic and melancholy\, and it features some of Godard’s most memorable set pieces\, including the headlong race through the Louvre and the unshakably cool Madison dance sequence. \n

SUMMARY:Kafé Kirk with special guest Wendy Moten
DESCRIPTION:Join Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, a monthly jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This month’s guest: Memphis-based jazz vocalist Wendy Moten. \nDoors at 5 pm | performance at 6 pm \nGeneral admission tickets — $45\nVIP tickets (includes a meet-and-greet and free CD) — $60 \nAbout Kirk Whalum:\nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring … these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his.The 80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene — especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first No. 1 album. Kirk and Bob also received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. \nAfter moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones\, and\, most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date. Others include his eclectic\, and much-lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nAbout Wendy Moten:\nWhen Wendy Moten talks about her more than 20 years in the music industry\, a few words come up over and over: growing\, collaborating\, learning. Lucky\, fortunate. \nA surprising juxtaposition emerges: one of pop music’s most powerful voices\, who hopes that her legacy will be as a collaborator\, open to creating great art. \nIt’s a refreshing perspective from a vocalist with Wendy’s resume. The Memphis-born singer has earned a vast collection of professional credits in Contemporary\, R&B\, Jazz\, Rock\, and Country since launching her career with her self-titled debut record (EMI) in 1992. That album produced two Billboard charting singles\, including the enduring ballad “Come In Out of the Rain” and the up-tempo dance hit “Step by Step.” \nOn the heels of that release\, Wendy was chosen to open for Michael Bolton during his North American stadium tour and connected with fans worldwide through sold-out headlining performances at venues like the famed Budokan in Japan. In 1994\, she recorded the GRAMMY ® nominated single “Whatever You Imagine\,” from the animated film The Pagemaster starring Macaulay Culkin. Additional film soundtrack credits include 1993’s Mr. Wonderful starring Annabella Sciorra and Matt Dillon. \nJulio Iglesias and Wendy Moten Wendy recorded two more albums for EMI: Time For Change\, an international smash and European best-seller\, with “Change Of Heart” and “Your Love Is All I Know;” and Life’s What You Make It\, which showcased her versatility as an artist\, vocalist\, producer and songwriter. \nThat’s when Wendy got an invitation that she says was pivotal to the course of her career. She travelled the world with Julio Iglesias as a featured vocalist for 15 years\, connecting with worldwide audiences\, growing tremendously as a performer and discovering herself as an artist. \nThrough that experience and in the years since\, Wendy has earned a reputation\, not just for her powerhouse voice but for her professionalism and versatility – a chameleon behind the mic\, she’s worked in every genre imaginable – and as a talented vocal and musical arranger and songwriter\, her recording credits reach across genre lines with artists like Michael Bolton\, Eric Clapton\, Buddy Guy\, Al Jarreau\, Joss Stone\, John Mayall\, Kenny Rogers\, Jeffrey Osborne\, Montgomery Gentry\, Brooks & Dunn\, Alice Cooper\, Mindy McCready\, Marcia Ball\, Joe Louis Walker\, Bonnie Tyler\, Todd Snider and many others. \nWendy Moten and Kirk Whalum by Patty W. PadgettIndeed\, the list goes on endlessly: her stunning lead vocal on the Stevie Wonder mega-hit\, “All I Do\,” from saxophonist Kirk Whalum’s GRAMMY® winning album\, “For You;” her duets on records like Michael McDonald’s No Love to Be Found; featured vocals on Buddy Guy’s 2009 GRAMMY® nominated album Skin Deep and the recently released Good Road to Follow by John Oates. In 2009\, she released Tis the Season\, a collaboration with American jazz\, pop\, and Latin pianist Clay Perry and in 2013 shared backing vocal duties with Bekka Bramlett at Bonnaroo’s Rock ‘N’ Soul Dance Party Superjam\, rocking out with an all-star lineup including John Oates\, Jim James\, Larry Graham\, Billy Idol\, R. Kelly\, and Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

SUMMARY:North Mississippi Allstars Record Release Party
DESCRIPTION:North Mississippi Allstars celebrate their latest release\, Up and Rolling\, on the Kemmons Wilson Family Stage at Crosstown Theater. \nWelcome Luther and Cody Dickinson back home to Memphis as they celebrate the release of their ninth studio effort\, Up and Rolling. Joining them will be Memphis-born comedian Deric Poston. \nTickets: $25\nDoors at 7 pm | Show at 8 pm \nWhile inspired by the community and music of that Sunday more than 20 years ago\, Up and Rolling is the sound of modern Mississippi. Luther hopes “the music is rooted but spreads evasively from the kudzu jungle grown over Junior’s concrete slab and Otha’s porch boards thru the Zebra Ranch’s razor wire chain link fence. Transcending time and space\, music reaches out into the dark of night like the wisteria vine\, looking for free-hearted souls to latch onto and wedge into the foundations of hate\, slowly tearing down walls a generation at a time.”

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents Synonyms
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \nWinner of the Golden Bear at Berlinale\, the latest from Nadav Lapid\, SYNONYMS features a dynamic lead performance from newcomer Tom Mercier\, whose feral intensity practically bursts out of the frame. Mercier plays Yoav\, a disaffected young Israeli who flees Tel Aviv for Paris to start a new life. \nDesperate to erase his origins\, Yoav sees becoming French as his only hope for salvation. Step one is to replace his language. From now on\, he will not utter a single word of Hebrew and his dictionary becomes his constant companion. His work at the Israeli embassy is a burden\, but studying for his naturalization test also has its pitfalls. And the young French couple he befriends has some rather strange ideas about how to help him. \nBased on writer-director Nadav Lapid’s own experiences\, Synonyms explores the challenges of putting down roots in a new place. Yoav’s attempts to find himself awaken past demons and open up an existential abyss in this tragicomic puzzle that wisely knows how to keep its secrets.

SUMMARY:Book Launch for Revolution in Black and White: Photographs for the Civil Rights Era
DESCRIPTION:The Withers Collection is hosting the official book launch and signing for Revolution in Black and White: Photographs for the Civil Rights Era by Ernest Withers on Tuesday\, Nov. 12 from 6-8 pm at Crosstown Theater. \nDoors open at 6 pm in the theater for a booksigning. There will be slideshow at 7 pm\, followed by a panel discussion at 7:30 pm with Richard Cahan\, Michael Williams\, and Rosalind Withers. Moderated by Emmy-nominated journalist and author\, Katina Rankin\, evening anchor for WATN-TV Local 24. \nThe event is free and open to the public. RSVP required. Printed or digital RSVP tickets MUST be presented at the venue. \nPlease be advised that there will be a documentary film crew recording this event. \n\nABOUT THE BOOK\n\n\nErnest C. Withers was one of the most prominent African-American photographers of the civil rights era. During the course of his work\, he took thousands of photographs that document the civil rights movement―from the Emmett Till trial in 1955 to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. in 1968.\n\n\n \n\n\nWhat set his work apart was that he went beyond the political struggles to explain the civil rights movement that changed the country. Withers was primarily a local photographer\, working as a freelancer for the Memphis World and Tri-State Defender starting in 1948. His photographs of the everyday world―bridge clubs\, funerals\, people at work and play\, and street life―create a stunning record of what it was like to live in Memphis and the Mid-South. He was also a noted baseball photographer\, documenting Negro League baseball in Memphis\, and a noted music photographer\, taking thousands of photographs of jazz\, blues\, rock ’n’ roll\, and R&B performers.\n\n\n \n\n\nThis book combines this work for the first time and uses first-hand accounts of people who lived in the South to explain these transformative years. The photographs\, taken as bare-bones journalism\, rises to the level of fine art decades later.\n\n\n \n\n\nThey are also important examples of photojournalism\, documenting decades of struggle in Memphis and the Mid-South. They serve as an important missing link in the civil rights narrative.\n\n\n \n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHORS\n\n\nRichard Cahan and Michael Williams are noted photo historians. They have teamed up to produce more than twelve books. Most are based on long-lost archives or photographic collections. Called “the eloquent archival sleuthing duo” by Booklist magazine’s Donna Seaman\, they have written award-winning books about photography\, art\, and history\, including two on Vivian Maier\, the reclusive nanny whose discovered photographic work has become a worldwide sensation.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents STALKER (1979) with DUBICEL (2019)
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp.\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series is proud to present DUBICEL\, the work of animator\, writer and director Yashira Jordan. Yashira was an inaugural participant in the Crosstown Arts Residency program. DUBICEL (12 minutes) is a cosmic child who lives in a galactic dome alone and wants to open the walls that imprison him to discover what is beyond and to discover the stars. Despite having the gift of materializing mysterious objects of his dreams\, he cannot find the one what allows him to open the window of his dome\, until one of them gives him the key to be able to reach what he needs. But this one is not an object. It is a living being. This short film was made by Ecological art recycling. \nOne of the most immersive and rarefied experiences in the history of cinema\, Andrei Tarkovsky’s STALKER  (161 minutes) embarks on a metaphysical journey through an enigmatic post-apocalyptic landscape. A hired guide — the “Stalker” of the title — leads a writer and a scientist into the heart of the Zone\, the restricted site of a long-ago disaster\, where the three men eventually zero in on the Room\, a place rumored to fulfill one’s most deeply held desires. Adapting a science-fiction novel by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky\, and making what would be his final Soviet feature\, Tarkovsky created a challenging and visually stunning work\, his painstaking attention to material detail and sense of organic atmosphere further enriched by this vivid new digital restoration. At once a religious allegory\, a reflection of contemporary political anxieties\, and a meditation on film itself—among many other interpretations—Stalker envelops the viewer by opening up a multitude of possible meanings. \n\nAbout Yashia Jordan:\nYashira Jordán was born in La Paz (Bolivia) in 1985.  Shem made her first short film when she was 12. SUMMARY:Kafé Kirk with special guest Bob James
DESCRIPTION:Join Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum for Kafé Kirk\, a monthly jazz series in Crosstown Theater featuring musical and spiritual collaborations with special guest artists. This month’s guest: Grammy-winning jazz keyboardist\, arranger\, and record producer Bob James. \nAbout Bob James:\nFrom his early days in Marshall\, MO\, Bob James’ music has captivated audiences throughout the world. \nKnown primarily as a jazz artist\, he has influenced musical genres from Classical to Hip-Hop. His work at the groundbreaking record label CTI allowed James to hone his skills on projects for Hank Crawford\, Grover Washington Jr.\, and Paul Simon among others. \nThe release of his solo album\, One\, launched a stellar career of recordings and performances. His gold selling album\, Touchdown included his composition “Angela” which became the theme song for the sitcom\, Taxi. \nMore recently Mr. James has become known as a pioneering member of the best-selling\ncontemporary jazz group Fourplay\, whose members over the years have included guitarists Lee Ritenour\, Larry Carlton\, and the late Chuck Loeb along with Nathan East on bass and Harvey Mason on drums. \nWhile James is recognized as one of the progenitors of smooth jazz\, his music has also had a profound effect on hip hop\, having been sampled often. Two of James’ songs —“Nautilus” from 1974’s One and “Take Me to the Mardi Gras” from 1975’s Two — are among the most sampled in history. \nJames continues to draw sold-out audiences worldwide\, not only as a solo artist\, but with\ncollaborations with artist such as David Sanborn\, Marcus Miller and The Bob James Trio.\nThe career of Bob James is long\, varied and continues to evolve at every turn.
