DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nIn A Change of Tone\, musicians will “exhibit” new work in one venue while performing in another\, creating a non-traditional listening experience. \nThe goal of A Change of Tone is to invite artists to sonically and musically explore the varied interrelations between technical musical themes and humanity: what we experience\, observe\, believe\, and imagine within the realms of our intellectual capabilities. \nAdmission is free (but donations of any amount are suggested); please RSVP on Eventbrite\nDoors at 7 pm | Performances beginning each night at 7:30 pm \nLineup:\nSaturday\, April 18 – NICHOLAS MALONEY\nSaturday\, April 19 – GUNTER GAUPP\nMonday\, April 20 – THE ACHELOIS COLLECTIVE \n\nABOUT THE EVENT:\nDuring this event\, there will be two live-feed interconnections between The Green Room music venue at Crosstown Arts and Crosstown Theater. The first feed will be an audio feed for the audience in The Green Room\, as the musicians\, out of sight\, perform their original work in the empty Crosstown Theater. The second feed will video-capture The Green Room audience so the performing musicians in the Theater may virtually watch and technically perform for their audience on the screen. The audience in The Green Room will be informed in advance that they will be watched by the performing musicians in the theater\, creating an immersive environment in which the performers’ new music might achieve a vivid and seemingly living omnipresence. \nSimilar to the experience of being inside a haunted house or abandoned building\, this spectral approach to auditory perception will be\, among other things\, a sonic experiment in vulnerability. It will be an attempt to enhance and heighten the audio-sensory experience for the listener and perhaps will intensify the presence and impact that music can have when our fight-or-flight response is instinctively activated\, giving the sounds we hear the power to demand our full attention. \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS: \nNicholas Maloney:\nNicholas Maloney is a sound artist\, multi-instrumentalist\, performer\, and recording engineer from Jackson\, Mississippi. Working primarily in the areas of drone\, ambient\, musique concrète\, and electroacoustics\, Nicholas creates recordings that he feels can provoke emotion\, while at the same time offering a palette of sound that can be used to practice the rewarding act of deep listening. He looks to challenge the listeners’ focus and perception of sound. Much of his work explores the textural nature of sound within a framework of progressing and evolving compositions. He is interested in the interaction among texture\, sound\, and space. \nUnder his full name\, Nicholas Maloney creates and releases compositions using field recordings\, found sounds\, and a variety of processing and audio transformation techniques. He also records under the moniker\, Blanket Swimming\, exploring the more melodic and ambient side of experimental music using guitar\, synthesizers\, tape manipulation\, field recordings\, voice\, and other instrumentation. Maloney also records under the name Sleep Silver Lightning\, exploring compositions for the guitar and voice. In 2015\, Maloney co-founded the net-label Warm Milk Recordings with Whitson Ramsey. \nGunter Gaupp:\nGunter is a composer and teacher based in Memphis\, who’s work combines interests in noise composition and genre music. Born in Louisiana\, Gunter’s recent work maintains a connection to jazz and folk traditions in his approach to melody and harmony\, while exploring new possibilities through extended technique and graphic notation. His music has been premiered recently in Chicago and Green Bay\, as well as internationally in Vienna and Paris. Gunter completed his MM in 2019 at the University of Memphis\, where he studied composition under Kamran Ince and John Baur. More recently\, Gunter has begun teaching music to middle and high school students at Memphis Rise Academy. Gunter will be presenting his new work for A Change of Tone as a quintet\, featuring Aaron Phillips (saxophone)\, Anna Welden (voice)\, Bryan Pallotta (piano)\, Michael Todd (percussion)\, and Ben Walsh (double bass). \nThe Achelois Collective:\nThe Achelois Collective is a contemporary chamber ensemble dedicated to helping co-design opportunities to create healthier communities through the art of new music. The ensemble’s 10 members are featured as composers\, collaborators\, chambers musicians\, and soloists who hail from across the continental U.S. Established in the summer of 2019\, TAC seeks to elevate\, celebrate\, and embolden female/non-binary voices in modern music and to support projects by artists of under-acknowledged backgrounds and nationalities. \nIn an effort to assist the world of classical music to become more egalitarian\, TAC creates spaces for active participation and appreciation for audiences of all genders\, ages and musical knowledge. Equally important\, the Collective strives to represent within themselves a model of respect and appreciation for the unique abilities and perspectives of their members and collaborators.

DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nBlack Orpheus is a retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice\, set in the streets of Rio during Carnival. When released in 1959\, Black Orpheus was an arthouse hit\, driven by incredible cinematography\, location\, and bossa nova music. \nOnly later\, people started to re-examine Black Orpheus\, its popularity\, and its audience — especially the idea of an all-black cast being shoehorned into a Greek myth through the lens of a white French director. DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice. \nSeijun Suzuki was a journeyman director for Nikkatsu\, one of the oldest Japanese film production companies in existence. Suzuki eventually went from journeyman to auteur\, slipping weird elements into what should have been run-of-the-mill Yakuza fare. Finally Suzuki made the legendary Branded to Kill (R.I.P.\, Joe Shishido) for Nikkatsu and was fired! \nSuzuki persevered and made more films\, but Crosstown Arts is going back to his roots with a screening of Tokyo Knights. Pre-dating the idea of “millennials\,” Tokyo Knights  is about a boy named Koji who is good at\, well\, everything. DESCRIPTION:** This event is postponed until further notice.  \nJoin us in Crosstown Theater for the Spotlight Concert Series\, featuring piano quintets by composers Dora Pejacovic and Zdenek Fibich. \nThis special performance by Memphis Symphony Orchestra musicians Priscilla Tsai\, Jordan Musgrave\, Ruth Burgess\, Josh Muzzi\, and pianist Tingting Yao features a program of piano quintets “lost in time” by composers Dora Pejacovic and Zdenek Fibich. \nGeneral Admission $10 | $5 with student ID\nDoors at 6 pm | Performance at 7 pm \nViolinist Jordan Musgraves writes about the program:\n“We happened upon these pieces in a YouTube channel that features recordings of obscure pieces. These are two that really stand out\, not only because the quality is so good but because when you dig down into why they never became widely known\, it seems such a shame that we don’t know these composers today. \nZdenek Fibich was a contemporary of Smetana and Dvorak and actually the first to ever use Czech folk music in symphonic works (their use of folk song was inspired by Fibich). In his time\, he did have some acclaim\, though he was criticized for not being quite Czech nationalist enough and especially for composing operas in the Wagnerian style. Born of a Czech father\, a forestry official\, and a German-Viennese mother\, he was of mixed heritage and was boycotted by most of the Czech orchestras. His music only survives because of his students\, who championed it. \nDora Pejacovic\, a Hungarian-Croatian composer firmly in the Romantic era\, was slightly later in time. Her music did not reach wide acclaim\, but even in an era of music and society dominated by men\, she had a large output of composition\, starting at age 12. She was mostly a self-taught composer\, but luckily for us\, was encouraged by several other composers who saw her talent and advocated for her music. She might have composed much more but sadly passed away following childbirth at age 39. Today\, there is an ongoing effort to publish her music\, much of which remains unpublished.

DESCRIPTION:Lee Moses (1941-1998)\, a music prodigy\, is considered one of the greatest unknown musicians among Baby Huey or Sixto Rodriguez (Sugar Man). He was part of a soul scene in Atlanta between the ’60s and the ’70s. His one album\, Time and Place (1971)\, did not take off. During his time in New York\, Moses played with greatest\, including Jimi Hendrix and James Brown. His music has now garnered a community of appreciation. Songs such as “Bad Girl” was used in the 2014 French film House of Tolerance\, and “If Loving You Is A Crime” was used in 2013 American film The Teacher. What makes his story remarkable is there’s not much to be found on Lee Moses. Even in his hometown of Atlanta\, there are no physical traces of him. While on the moon\, they are attacked and captured by moon natives who turn out to be surprisingly easy to kill and out-maneuver. In a similar tale of Earthmen hurling themselves into the void of space\, AELITA: QUEEN OF MARS is a Russian silent film about a man who leaves his boring Earth wife behind to go to Mars and lead a revolution with the help of a Martian Queen named Aelita. Since then\, Art Edmaiston\, Al Gamble\, Blake Rhea and Chad Gamble have all gone on to record and tour internationally with other well-known groups. Those artists include Grammy-winning Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit\, the Gregg Allman Band\, JJ Grey and Mofro\, Marc Broussard\, St. Paul and the Broken Bones\, and more. \nAbout CYC:\nSeamlessly mixing funk\, rap\, metal\, and jazz\, CYC first made their name in Midtown coffee shops and beer joints\, and ended their run as late-night stalwarts on Beale. The band became a springboard for launching Memphis music internationally as CYC members have since toured and collaborated with Justin Timberlake\, Jay-Z\, Buddy Guy\, Gregg Allman\, Yo Gotti\, 8Ball & MJG\, Dr. John and many more. It has been twenty years since CYC last performed but the grooves are fresh as ever and the band has been waiting for the opportunity to unleash the gems from the archives.

DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features. \nFilms begin at 7:30 pm sharp at Crosstown Theater\nTickets are $5 (at the door only) \nIn October 1985\, Britain witnessed a spate of civil disturbances in the Birmingham district of Handsworth and in urban centers of London. These were violent\, tragic events\, marked by the death of an elderly black woman\, Joy Gardner\, and a white policeman\, Keith Blakelock . \nHANDSWORTH SONGS (BLACK AUDIO FILM COLLECTIVE/JOHN AKOMFRAH)/1986/58 minutes) takes as its point of departure these events and the inability of the British media to go beyond its concern with demonizing or rationalizing the rioters and their motives\, to break the anxiety-driven loop of morbid responses to the presence of blacks in Britain. \nHandsworth Songs explores the idea that the riots represented less a self-contained drama of rage with a single origin and trajectory than a multiplicity of issues\, ambivalences \, to do with race\, longing\, and belonging – not all of which could be shored up by recourse to a rhetoric of civil disorder. The film’s sense of multiplicity extends to a rethinking of black British presence and a refuting of the idea of a homogenous black community with a single sense of presence characterized by uniformity of ambition and expression. \nInstead the film evokes a broad range of voices\, tones\, registers. And it is through this panoply of positions and presences that Handsworth Songs approaches the riots and expresses its central idea — that it is not the riots in their dramatic unfolding\, nor even in the wake of their violent eruption\, which provide us with a route into the drama. \nHandsworth Songs contends that the meaning in the malaise is to be found in events outside the frame of contemporary reportage\, in moments which seemed to have little affective relation to the expressions of discontent which characterized the riots – in the annals of post war news reportage around race in Britain\, transformed in the film into an archive of black (un)belonging\, in the expression of hopes of belonging brutally deferred.

This audacious and wildly entertaining French New Wave gem is at once sentimental and insouciant\, effervescently romantic and melancholy\, and it features some of Godard’s most memorable set pieces\, including the headlong race through the Louvre and the unshakably cool Madison dance sequence. \n

Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his.The 80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene — especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first No. 1 album. Kirk and Bob also received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. \nAfter moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in-demand session player for top artists like Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones\, and\, most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros.
