As well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like\, Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. We know you were looking forward to this performance at least as much as we were\, and we apologize for the disappointment and for any inconvenience. \nRefunds will be issued for the entire purchase—that includes the ticket price and Eventbrite’s fees. \nWilliam Basinski is a classically trained musician and composer who has been working in experimental media for over 30 years in NYC and\, most recently\, California. Employing obsolete technology and analogue tape loops\, his haunting and melancholy soundscapes explore the temporal nature of life and resound with the reverberations of memory and the mystery of time. \nHis epic 4-disc masterwork\, The Disintegration Loops received international critical acclaim and was chosen as one of the top 50 albums of 2004 by Pitchfork Media. The Temporary Residence deluxe LP box-set reissue from 2012 was awarded best re-issue of the year and a score of 10 on Pitchfork. Installations and films made in collaboration with artist-filmmaker\, James Elaine have been presented in festivals and museums internationally\, and his concerts are presented to sold out crowds around the world. \nBasinski was chosen by Music Director\, Antony Hegarty to create music for the Robert Wilson opera\, The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic which had its world premiere at the Manchester International Festival in July 2011 and toured Europe in 2012 and North America in 2013. Orchestral transcriptions of The Disintegration Loops by Maxim Moston have been performed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Queen Elizabeth Hall and La Batie Festival in Geneva\, Switzerland\, Dark Mofo Festival in Hobart Tasmania and most recently Pitchfork Midwinter Festival with the Chicago Philharmonic. \nBasinski is currently touring the world in support of his latest work\, “On Time Out of Time” which was released on March 8th\, 2019 on Temporary Residence/2062/USA.

Since his debut with his own trio in 2011\, Shai has shaped a strong and unique personal identity and has portrayed an incredible musical fluidity\, making him and his band one of the most powerful and harmonious groups in jazz today. \n2018 marked an important year for Shai\, signing with major jazz label ECM and recording his first album The Dream Thief there\, featuring his trio\, but also him as a solo-pianist. Introspective\, lyrical\, virtuosic and differentiated. In its review of The Dream Thief\, All About Jazz spoke of “a searching lyrical atmosphere\, emotional eloquence and communal virtuosity that serves the music.” All of which also applies to Human\, Shai’s latest release on ECM\, where Maestro’s outgoing\, highly-communicative band with fellow Israeli Ofri Nehemya on drums and Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder becomes a quartet with the inspired addition of US trumpeter Philip Dizack. Shai’s expansive pianism is well-matched by Dizack’s alert\, quick-thinking approach to improvising. And\, as ever\, Maestro is taking the music forward while also respecting its sense of tradition. Human was recorded at Studios la Buissonne in the South of France in February 2020\, and produced by Manfred Eicher. \nShai Maestro began playing classical piano at age five and graduated with honors from the Thelma Yell in High School of Performing Arts in Givataim\, Israel. After winning the National Jazz Ensembles Competition “Jazz Signs” in 2002 and 2003 and receiving excellency scholarships 2004-2010 from the America-Israel Cultural Fund for jazz piano\, Maestro attended Berklee College of Music’s Five-Week Summer Performance Program in Boston\, where he was awarded a full scholarship to attend Berklee full-time—an offer Maestro ultimately declined. \nMaestro’s intuitions proved right: just a few weeks later\, he received a phone call from bassist Avishai Cohen\, known for his long-time collaboration with Chick Corea as well as for his successful band-leading career. The bassist called to invite Maestro to join the Avishai Cohen Trio with drummer Mark Guiliana. Maestro recorded four albums with the Avishai Cohen Trio\, including two on Blue Note Records: Gently Disturbed (2008)\, Sensitive Hours (2008)\, Aurora (2009)\, and Seven Seas (2011). The trio toured the world and played at some of the world’s most renowned venues and festivals. \nIn July 2010\, Maestro formed his own trio and just a few months later\, recorded their well-received first album\, Shai Maestro Trio\, for the French label Laborie Jazz. The trio began an intense schedule of touring the world\, playing up to 80 concerts a year and sharing stages with groups led by Chick Corea\, Tigran Hamasyan\, Esperanza Spalding\, and Diana Krall. In 2012\, the trio released their second album for Laborie Jazz\, entitled The Road to Ithaca\, making an even more personal and intimate statement\, going back to the essence of their being: unedited and raw. \nFollowing that line of thought\, Shai released recent albums Untold Stories and The Stone Skippe‘ in October 2014 and November 2016. Listeners and the media outlets alike\, including DownBeat Magazine\, NPR\, BBC\, JazzFM\, TSF\, and WBGO’s The Checkout\, received the albums with critical acclaim. With these albums\, Maestro entered a new phase in his artistry: taking time\, fearing less\, daring more\, and allowing the music to unfold organically\, more than ever. Especially live\, the natural developments made the trio one of the most powerful and harmonious groups in jazz. The past few years\, the trio has performed at the most renown stages\, venues and festivals worldwide. \nBesides his trio\, Maestro recorded on vocalist Theo Bleckmann’s album Elegy. Maestro has also received critical acclaim appearing on Mark Guiliana’s Jazz Quartet’s debut album Family First (2015). Most recently\, Shai recorded on saxophonist Ben Wendel’s album High Heart (Edition Records\, 2020). \nWithin the past couple of years\, Shai reached two important career milestones: he signed with Sony / ATV Music Publishing and was invited to perform with Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra\, conducted by Keitaro Harada\, at Tokyo Metropolitan Theater. The program consisted of Miho Hazama’s first piano concerto as well as Shai’s original music.

The multi-instrumental band’s other ‘not-nots’ encompass traditions from across America\, including bluegrass\, Appalachian fiddle tunes\, jazz\, and minimalism. Invoke weaves all of these styles together to create truly individual music written by and for the group. \nThe band has recently garnered major prizes at international competitions including winning First Prize at the M-Prize International Chamber Arts competition in Ann Arbor\, MI\, the First Prize in the Coltman Competition in Austin\, TX\, and the “New Music/New Places” prize at Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition in New York. The group’s 20-21 season will take them across North America performing concert engagements and participating in major educational residencies. Highlights include performances at Lincoln Center\, Norton Center for the Arts\, Newberry Opera House and Green Music Center. \nInvoke has shared the stage with some of the most acclaimed ensembles in the country\, ranging from the Ensō Quartet to the U.S. Army Field Band\, and has also appeared with musicians in greatly varying genres – from chamber rock powerhouse San Fermin to DC beatboxer/rapper/spoons virtuoso Christylez Bacon. \nInvoke’s debut release Souls in the Mud\, and their follow-up Furious Creek\, both feature original works composed by and for the group\, plus the quartet has also performed and recorded numerous world premieres. Blueshift Ensemble will perform works by Alex Burtzos\, Derek Cooper\, Jack Frerer\, Jessica Mays\, Max Grafe\, as well as new music by Becky Turro. Dr. Sealey-Ruiz will read from her recent book The Peace Chronicles. \nAfter the performance\, the poet\, performers\, and composers will join audience members for drinks and discussion. \nABOUT THE MUSIC \nThe Peace Chronicles is a two-evening program of poetry and music created as a collaboration between composer collective ICEBERG New Music (www.icebergnewmusic.com) and award-winning poet and scholar Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz (www.yolandasealeyruiz.com). The program premiered to sold-out audiences in New York City in Spring 2022. Each of the newly-composed works included in The Peace Chronicles is inspired by a poem from Dr. Sealey-Ruiz’s book of the same name. In performance\, the words and music are juxtaposed next to one another\, inviting listeners to find connections between the different media. The programs are structured dramatically\, the poems tracing a path from conflict through reconciliation and peace. \nABOUT ICEBERG NEW MUSIC \nICEBERG New Music is a collective of ten young composers based in New York City. ICEBERG’s mission is to promote the idea that substance\, not surface\, is the heart of music creation and perception. The collective’s ten member composers hail from different schools of thought and cultivate radically different sounds — from musical theater and indie rock to avant-garde sounds and electronic installations — but their contrasting musical languages belie a shared emphasis on structure and depth of meaning. When these artists compose for the same ensemble and present their works during a joint concert\, the result is a glimpse into the ever-widening possibilities of art music in the twenty-first century. \nABOUT YOLANDA SEALEY-RUIZ \nDr. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz is an award-winning Associate Professor at Teachers College\, Columbia University. Her research focuses on racial literacy in teacher education\, Black girl literacies\, and Black and Latinx male high school students. A sought-after speaker on issues of race\, culturally responsive pedagogy\, and diversity\, Sealey-Ruiz works with K-12 and higher education school communities to increase their racial literacy knowledge and move toward more equitable school experiences for their Black and Latinx students. Sealey-Ruiz appeared in Spike Lee’s “2 Fists Up: We Gon’ Be Alright”\, a documentary about the Black Lives Matter movement and the campus protests at Mizzou. Her co-authored book [with Dr. Detra Price-Dennis] Advancing Racial Literacies in Teacher Education: Toward Activism for Equity in Digital Spaces will be published in April 2021. \nABOUT BLUESHIFT ENSEMBLE \nBlueshift is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. Members of Blueshift are involved in almost every corner of the Memphis music community\, from performing in the Memphis Symphony Orchestra\, recording in the studio\, teaching at the University of Memphis and Rhodes College\, playing in your favorite local bands\, and composing original music for film. Founded by flutist Jenny Davis and cellist Jonathan Kirkscey in 2016\, Blueshift aims to bring classical music out of the concert hall and into the community. \nThis programming is made possible in part thanks to an Organizational Development Fund grant from New Music USA.
