SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Film Series presents ’ROUND MIDNIGHT
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents ’ROUND MIDNIGHT at Crosstown Theater. \nBertrand Tavernier / 1986 / 133 minutes / Rated R\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 p.m. | Films begin at 7:00 p.m. (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \n’ROUND MIDNIGHT is a love letter from director Bertrand Tavernier to the heyday of bebop and the Black American musicians who found refuge in the smoky underground jazz clubs of 1950s Paris. In a sui generis\, Oscar-nominated fusion of performer and character\, legendary saxophonist Dexter Gordon plays Dale Turner\, a brilliant New York jazz veteran whose music aches with beauty but whose personal life is ravaged by addiction. Searching for a fresh start in Paris\, Turner strikes up an unlikely friendship with a struggling single father and ardent jazz fan (François Cluzet) who finds his life transformed as he attempts to help the self-destructive musician. Herbie Hancock’s evocative\, Oscar-winning score sets the mood for this definitive jazz film\, a bittersweet opus that glows with lived-in\, soulful authenticity. \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arts Film Series presents BRUCE LEE VS. SUPERMAN
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents BRUCE LEE VS. SUPERMAN at Crosstown Theater. \nChia-Chun Wu / 1975 / 86 minutes / Rated R\nTickets: $5 at the door\nDoors at 6:30 p.m. | Films begin at 7:00 p.m. (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nAlong with THE DRAGON LIVES AGAIN\, BRUCE LEE VS. SUPERMAN is easily one of the most synapse-frying entries in the magical sub-genre known as Bruceploitation. Triad gangsters call Superman out of retirement to kidnap a scientist who solved the global food shortage crisis. Superman agrees to the deal in exchange for “money\, plenty of girls\, and booze.” The authorities enlist Kato (Bruce Li)\, the Green Hornet’s partner\, to help. Kato hires his friend Carter (also Bruce Lee)\, who looks\, dresses\, acts\, and wields nunchucks just like Bruce Lee. The result is total madness. A fascinating time capsule from the golden era of gonzo exploitation filmmaking\, BRUCE LEE VS. SUPERMAN has been preserved from the only known 35mm print in existence! \nThe Crosstown Arts Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground\, and documentary features.

SUMMARY:Adam W. Sadberry: “Musical Journalism”
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 7PM | Performance begins at 7:30PM \nTickets: $15 advance | $20 at the door ($5 student tickets available) \nPurchase tickets here \nThis is a concert inspired by Adam W. Sadberry’s late grandfather and unsung hero of the Civil Rights Movement\, L. Alex Wilson. Wilson’s work as an editor and journalist changed the world through covering pivotal Civil Rights events including the lynching of Emmett Till\, the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the desegregation of Central High School by the Little Rock 9\, the last of which played a part in Wilson’s transformation into a martyr. In this concert\, Adam intertwines articles that he collected from the archives of the Tri-State Defender\, Wilson’s newspaper in Memphis\, Tennessee\, with music that contextualizes the humanity and inhumanity of the stories. \nAdam will be joined on stage by pianist Dr. Artina McCain and clarinetist Dr. Andre Dyachenko. \nThis programming is made possible in part thanks to an Organizational Development Fund grant from New Music USA.

SUMMARY:Film Screening by Resident Artists R Jason Rawlings and Angelo Madsen Minax
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents NATIVES and NORTH BY CURRENT at Crosstown Theater. \nFree and open to the public\nDoors at 6:00 p.m.\, and films begin at 6:30 p.m. in Crosstown Theater. \nTwo films will be screened\, with a brief Q&A with the artists after the screening. \nIn Natives\, a short film by fall session artist in residence R Jason Rawlings\, two years after Hurricane Katrina\, a claims adjuster returns home to The Delta to little fanfare.   \nIn fall session artist in residence Angelo Madsen Minax’s feature-length film North by Current\, after the inconclusive death of his young niece\, the filmmaker returns to his rural Michigan hometown\, preparing to make a film about a broken criminal justice system. Instead\, he pivots to excavate the depths of generational addiction\, Christian fervor\, and trans embodiment. Lyrically assembled images\, decades of home movies\, and ethereal narration form an idiosyncratic and poetic undertow that guide a viewer through lifetimes and relationships. Like the relentless Michigan seasons\, the meaning of family shifts\, as Madsen\, his sister\, and his parents strive tirelessly to accept each other. Poised to incite more internal searching than provide clear statements or easy answers\, North by Current is a visual rumination on the understated relationships between mothers and children\, truths and myths\, losses and gains.

DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Theater\nSaturday\, November 5\, 2022\nDoors open at 7PM | Show begins at 7:30PM\nTickets: $20 ($15 if purchased in advance) | Student tickets $10 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nUnheard-of//Ensemble will perform Fire Ecologies by Christopher Stark\, a fifty-five minute unique musical and visual experience that explores American landscapes through the lens of climate change. Composer Christopher Stark and video artist Zlatko Ćosić embarked on a journey across the United States capturing audio and video for this multimedia experience. The work incorporates field recordings of the 2020 California wildfires along with sonic and visual imagery from Chris’s trip across Montana\, Oregon\, and California as well as parts of Colorado. Zlatko gathered footage from the American heartland surrounding Missouri as well as long form explorations of nature surrounding St. Louis. Stark created a work that can be experienced both in concert halls as well as in nature\, from gallery spaces to the Gowanus Canal. \nAbout Unheard-of//Ensemble: \nUnheard-of//Ensemble is a contemporary chamber ensemble dedicated to connecting new music to communities across the United States through the development and performance of adventurous programs\, using technology and interactive multimedia. Unheard-of is committed to the idea that new music belongs in every community\, and implements this mission through concerts and educational workshops throughout New York\, as well as across the United States through touring. Unheard-of’s scope and impact has grown dramatically since forming in 2014\, now a nation-wide community across multiple artistic genres. With an approach that is open and welcoming of all voices\, Unheard-of strives to be a vehicle for imaginative voices novel and experienced\, experimental and traditional\, uncomfortable and accessible. \nUnheard-of commissions large-scale multimedia projects\, runs its own summer workshop for emerging composers (the Collaborative Composition Initiative or CCI)\, and self-presents collaborative concerts with community organizations like the Gowanus Dredgers and Tideland Institute. These innovative projects range from concerts aboard rafts in the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn\, to gallery spaces and concert halls. Unheard-of’s 2022-23 season features new commissions by Nickitas Demos\, Lila Meretzky\, Adam Mirza\, and “Unheard-of plays Unheard-of”\, a concert of premieres written by the ensemble. This October the ensemble tours Ohio\, visiting Kent State University\, Kent State’s Stark Campus\, and Oberlin. In November\, Unheard-of has a residency at Washington University of St. Louis\, visits Illinois State University\, and performs on Crosstown Arts’ series in Memphis\, Tennessee. Unheard-of’s spring features a four-day guest residency with the Northwestern University composition studio\, a concert at Chicago’s Constellation\, and a collaboration with Minnesota-based Spitting Image Collective workshopping and premiering new multimedia works written by the collective. \nUnheard-of//Ensemble’s 2021-22 season took them across the Midwest\, Southeast\, Texas\, and their home state of New York. Unheard-of served as the 2021-22 KEAR ensemble-in-residence at Bowling Green State University. The group also toured the South with performances at University of Texas- San Antonio\, Texas State University\, Southeastern Louisiana University\, University of Tennessee Chattanooga\, Emory University\, Chattanooga State Community College\, and University of Georgia. In 2020-21\, the ensemble presented virtual residencies at Florida State University\, University of Florida\, University of Central Florida\, and the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. To date\, the ensemble has premiered over 100 works with commissions. \nUnheard-of has received support from the Johnstone Fund for New Music\, the Dwight and Ursula Mamlok Foundation\, the Tennessee Arts Commission\, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts\, the Barlow Endowment\, the Alice M. Ditson Fund\, the Aaron Copland Fund\, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, the New York Women Composers Organization\, the Brooklyn Arts Council\, and the Puffin Foundation. Unheard-of was a recipient of a Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant to commission recent Rome Prize-winner Christopher Stark\, as well as a Chamber Music America Ensemble Forward Grant made possible with support of the New York Community Trust. \nTheir debut album Unheard-of//Dialogues was released to critical acclaim: “a fantastic debut by a group that has been doing more than their part to inject vitality into the new music scene for the last few years” (Jeremy Shatan\, An Earful). The album’s eclectic repertoire has garnered the attention of critics from ArtsATL (“Powerfully evocative”)\, Steve Smith of National Sawdust Log (“scintillating and evocative”)\, and Creative Loafing Atlanta (“mellifluous magic”). \nThis programming is made possible in part thanks to an Organizational Development Fund grant from New Music USA.

SUMMARY:PUBLIQuartet
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents GRAMMY-nominated PUBLIQuartet at Crosstown Theater. \n\n\n\n\n\nCrosstown Theater\nTuesday\, October 18\, 2022\nDoors at 7pm | Show at 7:30pm \nTickets: $20 in advance | $25 day of the show ($10 student tickets)\nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nApplauded by The Washington Post as “a perfect encapsulation of today’s trends in chamber music\,” and by The New Yorker as “independent-minded\,” the GRAMMY-nominated PUBLIQuartet’s modern interpretation of chamber music makes them one of the most dynamic artists of their generation.  Dedicated to presenting new works for string quartet\, PUBLIQuartet rose on the music scene as winner of the 2013 Concert Artists Guild’s New Music/New Places award\, and in 2019 garnered Chamber Music America’s prestigious Visionary Award for outstanding and innovative approaches to contemporary classical\, jazz\, and world chamber music.  PQ’s genre-bending programs range from 20th century masterworks to newly commissioned pieces\, alongside re-imaginations of classical works featuring open-form improvisations that expand the techniques and aesthetic of the traditional string quartet. \nPUBLIQuartet has served as artist-in-residence at top institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and National Sawdust and has appeared at a wide variety of venues and festivals\, from Carnegie Hall and the Newport Jazz Festival to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Their latest album\, the GRAMMY-nominated Freedom and Faith\, debuted atop the Billboard Classical Charts in May 2019. The 2019-2020 season brings a diverse array of programs to venues across the United States and abroad\, including an appearance at the String Quartet Biennale in Amsterdam. \nPUBLIQuartet’s commitment to supporting emerging composers inspired their innovative program\, PUBLIQ Access\, which promotes emerging composers and presents a wide variety of under-represented music for string quartet–from classical\, jazz and electronic\, to non-notated\, world and improvised music. Other unique projects include MIND|THE|GAP\, a series of group-composed works developed by PQ to generate interest in new music while also engaging traditional classical music audiences. These unique creations range from “Bird in Paris” (Claude Debussy meets Charlie Parker) to more recent extended works including “What Is American?” (an exploration of Dvorak’s beloved “American” String Quartet) and Sancta Femina (based on themes by three medieval and baroque female composers). \nFounded in 2010\, PUBLIQuartet is currently based in New York City. \nThis programming is made possible in part thanks to an Organizational Development Fund grant from New Music USA.

SUMMARY:Kafé Kirk featuring Kirk Whalum and Dave Koz

A Platinum-selling artist\, Koz is also known as a humanitarian\, entrepreneur\, radio host and instrumental music advocate. \nKIRK WHALUM \nSoulful\, passionate\, stirring…these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis\, (TN) gospel roots and his 1980‘s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The 80’s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene––especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well\, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album\, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles\, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like\, Barbara Streisand\, Al Jarreau\, Luther Vandross\, Larry Carlton\, Quincy Jones and most notably\, Whitney Houston\, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit\, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records\, For You\, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic\, and much lauded\, Gospel According to Jazz series\, (Chapters 1\, 2\, 3 and 4). In addition to his many solo projects\, Kirk was also a member of the popular soul/jazz group\, BWB\, which features Kirk as the “W” of the group with Rick Braun (trumpet) and Norman Brown (guitar). \nKirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations\, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards- Gospel music’s highest honor. A twelve time Grammy nominee\, Kirk won his first Grammy award (2011)for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”––featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted songwriter\, Jerry Peters.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED: William Basinski
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: We are sorry to announce that William Basinski at Crosstown Arts has been cancelled. Unfortunately\, through no fault of his\, William’s flight was cancelled and he is stuck in a city too far from Memphis to make the drive in time for the performance. William and his production crew tried to find alternatives\, but all possibilities were exhausted. We know you were looking forward to this performance at least as much as we were\, and we apologize for the disappointment and for any inconvenience. \nRefunds will be issued for the entire purchase—that includes the ticket price and Eventbrite’s fees. \nWilliam Basinski is a classically trained musician and composer who has been working in experimental media for over 30 years in NYC and\, most recently\, California. Employing obsolete technology and analogue tape loops\, his haunting and melancholy soundscapes explore the temporal nature of life and resound with the reverberations of memory and the mystery of time. \nHis epic 4-disc masterwork\, The Disintegration Loops received international critical acclaim and was chosen as one of the top 50 albums of 2004 by Pitchfork Media. The Temporary Residence deluxe LP box-set reissue from 2012 was awarded best re-issue of the year and a score of 10 on Pitchfork. Installations and films made in collaboration with artist-filmmaker\, James Elaine have been presented in festivals and museums internationally\, and his concerts are presented to sold out crowds around the world. \nBasinski was chosen by Music Director\, Antony Hegarty to create music for the Robert Wilson opera\, The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic which had its world premiere at the Manchester International Festival in July 2011 and toured Europe in 2012 and North America in 2013. Orchestral transcriptions of The Disintegration Loops by Maxim Moston have been performed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Queen Elizabeth Hall and La Batie Festival in Geneva\, Switzerland\, Dark Mofo Festival in Hobart Tasmania and most recently Pitchfork Midwinter Festival with the Chicago Philharmonic. \nBasinski is currently touring the world in support of his latest work\, “On Time Out of Time” which was released on March 8th\, 2019 on Temporary Residence/2062/USA.

SUMMARY:Crosstown Arthouse presents SPIDER BABY
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arthouse Film Series presents SPIDER BABY at Crosstown Theater. \nJack Hill / 1967 / 81 minutes / N/R\nTickets: $5 at the door\nFilms begin at 7:30 pm (sharp!) at Crosstown Theater \nThe first solo feature from exploitation legend Jack Hill (Foxy Brown)\, Spider Baby remains one of the wildest and weirdest horror films of the 1960s. The credits dub this “the maddest story ever told\,” a promise that’s well on the way to being fulfilled in the opening scene alone\, when Virginia traps and kills a hapless deliveryman in her makeshift web. She’s one of three siblings\, including Sid Haig\, who suffer from a unique genetic disorder that causes them to regress back to childhood while retaining the physical strength and sexual maturity of adults. Lon Chaney Jr. (The Wolf Man) gives one of his most memorable late performances as Bruno\, who manages to cover up the crimes of the “kids” until two distant relatives lay claim to their house. Blending elements of gothic horror and gallows humor\, Spider Baby drops somewhere between The Addams Family and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.  \nThe Crosstown Arthouse Film Series showcases a diverse collection of independent\, international\, historically significant\, artistic\, experimental\, cult\, underground and documentary features.

SUMMARY:Shai Maestro Quartet + Strings
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Theater\nFriday\, September 30\, 2022\nDoors open at 7pm | Show begins at 8pm\nTickets: $30 in advance | $35 day of the show \nPurchase tickets here \n“Expressions of joy\, introspective thoughts and heightened intensity all come to the fore” – Downbeat Magazine \n“His piano style fits into a particular modern tradition\, one that combines ultra-clean classical technique with a strong interest in repetitive\, almost looping figures and romantic melodies” – Stereogum \nShai Maestro (1987) is one of the most promising and talented pianists of his generation. Since his debut with his own trio in 2011\, Shai has shaped a strong and unique personal identity and has portrayed an incredible musical fluidity\, making him and his band one of the most powerful and harmonious groups in jazz today. \n2018 marked an important year for Shai\, signing with major jazz label ECM and recording his first album The Dream Thief there\, featuring his trio\, but also him as a solo-pianist. Introspective\, lyrical\, virtuosic and differentiated. In its review of The Dream Thief\, All About Jazz spoke of “a searching lyrical atmosphere\, emotional eloquence and communal virtuosity that serves the music.” All of which also applies to Human\, Shai’s latest release on ECM\, where Maestro’s outgoing\, highly-communicative band with fellow Israeli Ofri Nehemya on drums and Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder becomes a quartet with the inspired addition of US trumpeter Philip Dizack. Shai’s expansive pianism is well-matched by Dizack’s alert\, quick-thinking approach to improvising. And\, as ever\, Maestro is taking the music forward while also respecting its sense of tradition. Human was recorded at Studios la Buissonne in the South of France in February 2020\, and produced by Manfred Eicher. \nShai Maestro began playing classical piano at age five and graduated with honors from the Thelma Yell in High School of Performing Arts in Givataim\, Israel. After winning the National Jazz Ensembles Competition “Jazz Signs” in 2002 and 2003 and receiving excellency scholarships 2004-2010 from the America-Israel Cultural Fund for jazz piano\, Maestro attended Berklee College of Music’s Five-Week Summer Performance Program in Boston\, where he was awarded a full scholarship to attend Berklee full-time—an offer Maestro ultimately declined. \nMaestro’s intuitions proved right: just a few weeks later\, he received a phone call from bassist Avishai Cohen\, known for his long-time collaboration with Chick Corea as well as for his successful band-leading career. The bassist called to invite Maestro to join the Avishai Cohen Trio with drummer Mark Guiliana. Maestro recorded four albums with the Avishai Cohen Trio\, including two on Blue Note Records: Gently Disturbed (2008)\, Sensitive Hours (2008)\, Aurora (2009)\, and Seven Seas (2011). The trio toured the world and played at some of the world’s most renowned venues and festivals. \nIn July 2010\, Maestro formed his own trio and just a few months later\, recorded their well-received first album\, Shai Maestro Trio\, for the French label Laborie Jazz. The trio began an intense schedule of touring the world\, playing up to 80 concerts a year and sharing stages with groups led by Chick Corea\, Tigran Hamasyan\, Esperanza Spalding\, and Diana Krall. In 2012\, the trio released their second album for Laborie Jazz\, entitled The Road to Ithaca\, making an even more personal and intimate statement\, going back to the essence of their being: unedited and raw. \nFollowing that line of thought\, Shai released recent albums Untold Stories and The Stone Skippe‘ in October 2014 and November 2016. Listeners and the media outlets alike\, including DownBeat Magazine\, NPR\, BBC\, JazzFM\, TSF\, and WBGO’s The Checkout\, received the albums with critical acclaim. With these albums\, Maestro entered a new phase in his artistry: taking time\, fearing less\, daring more\, and allowing the music to unfold organically\, more than ever. Especially live\, the natural developments made the trio one of the most powerful and harmonious groups in jazz. The past few years\, the trio has performed at the most renown stages\, venues and festivals worldwide. \nBesides his trio\, Maestro recorded on vocalist Theo Bleckmann’s album Elegy. Maestro has also received critical acclaim appearing on Mark Guiliana’s Jazz Quartet’s debut album Family First (2015). Most recently\, Shai recorded on saxophonist Ben Wendel’s album High Heart (Edition Records\, 2020). \nWithin the past couple of years\, Shai reached two important career milestones: he signed with Sony / ATV Music Publishing and was invited to perform with Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra\, conducted by Keitaro Harada\, at Tokyo Metropolitan Theater. The program consisted of Miho Hazama’s first piano concerto as well as Shai’s original music.
