SUMMARY:Lovelight Orchestra featuring John Nemeth
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Lovelight Orchestra featuring John Nemeth in the Theater \nThe Theater at Crosstown Arts\nFriday\, October 11\, 2024\nDoors open at 7 pm | Show begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: $30 \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nThe phrase “the Memphis sound” often evokes Sun rockabilly or the mid-‘60s “deep soul” era of Stax\, but a style equally important in the city’s rich musical history was the big band blues found on the singles of Bobby “Blue” Bland\, B.B. King and Herman ”Junior” Parker. It’s a sound proudly celebrated today by the Love Light Orchestra\, a group of seasoned Memphis musicians whose name derives from Bland’s 1961 hit “Turn On Your Love Light.” \nThe 10-piece band—initially envisioned by guitarist Joe Restivo\, vocalist John Nemeth and arranger/trumpeter Marc Franklin—also reveals their affection for Bland here through covers of “”I’ve Been Wrong So Long” and “Poverty\,” and they tip their hat to King and Parker through\, respectively\, “Bad Breaks” and “Sometimes.” \nIn addition to dipping into the catalogs of Buddy Ace\, Freddie King\, and Percy Mayfield\, the band demonstrates their deftness with uptown blues via the solid originals “Singing For My Supper\, “Lonesome and High\,” and the Ray Charles-inspired opener “See Why I Love You.” Casual fans of Memphis music might only recognize their cover of Al Green’s iconic “Love and Happiness\,” but it’s reset here as a shuffle\, building upon riffs that Franklin says were inspired by Charles Mingus’ “Fables of Faubus.” \nThe Love Light Orchestra’s overall sound\, says Franklin\, was inspired by Joe Scott\, the longtime arranger for Bland\, whose work Franklin discovered after he was hired to play with Bland in the early ‘90s [Saxophonist Art Edmaiston and drummer Earl Lowe also did stints with Bland]. “The first time I heard his work it sounded like Ellington\, but more downhome\, with extended harmonics that you don’t necessarily hear on blues or soul records. It’s a jazz thing\, throwing extra notes into the chords—at Stax they didn’t do 6th chords.” \nBland and King’s signature styles developed with the aid of formally trained Memphis musicians versed in swing arrangements. King’s first two singles featured the city’s first family of jazz\, Phineas Newborn\, Sr.\, and his sons Calvin and Phineas\, Jr.\, and some of King and Bland’s early recordings featured arranger and multi-instrumentalist Onzie Horne\, Sr.\, later a contributor to “Theme From Shaft.” \n“The Memphis sound of the ‘50s put in the sophistication with the horns\, but it never lost that gritty aspect of the blues\,” says Nemeth. “And the spirituality in the vocals was tremendous— the melodies have such great movements\, and the lyrical rhythms are perfect.” \nGuitarist Restivo has plenty of solos here\, but notes “we wanted to make a horn record\, so the featured instrument is saxophone. That was the axe of choice on Beale Street at the time.” Grammy winning producer/engineer Matt Ross-Spang cut the record at the tiny DKDC bar in Midtown Memphis\, and recalls “it was more or less done after we cut it.” \n“This music is really supposed to be heard live\, to be in the room to feel the horns\, and it turned out magically—lightning in a bottle twelve times in just a couple hours.” \nJohn Nemeth / Vocals\nMarc Franklin / Trumpet / Arranger\nArt Edmaiston / Tenor Sax\nJason Yasinsky / Trombone\nKirk Smothers / Baritone Sax\nPaul Mckinney / Trumpet\nEarl Lowe / Drums\nJoe Restivo / Guitar\nMatthew Wilson / Double Bass\nGerald Stephens/Piano

Forged from his Memphis\, Tennessee\, gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston\, TX nightclub scene\, Kirk’s big\, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The ’80s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene—especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album.\n

She played every instrument\, wrote every lyric\, and sang every vocal part herself. “I felt it necessary to have my hand touch every aspect of this collection of music\,” she says. “This was a deeply personal\, very physical experience to go through\, and it was imperative that I used my body as the vehicle to create every tone and texture of this project.”\n\nThe album resonates with the sounds of the South\, blending traditional instruments like the accordion and frottoir with contemporary production and electronic elements. SUMMARY:Film Series :  In The Mood For Love (2000) directed by Wong Kar-wai
DESCRIPTION:Film Series :  In The Mood For Love (2000) directed by Wong Kar-wai\n\nHong Kong\, 1962: Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) and Su Li-zhen (Maggie Cheung Man-yuk) move into neighboring apartments on the same day. Their encounters are formal and polite—until a discovery about their spouses creates an intimate bond between them. At once delicately mannered and visually extravagant\, Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments. With its aching musical soundtrack and exquisitely abstract cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping-bin\, this film has been a major stylistic influence on the past decade of cinema\, and is a milestone in Wong’s redoubtable career. SUMMARY:"The Films of Stan Brakhage" with an original live score by Cloudland Canyon
DESCRIPTION:The Crosstown Arts Film Series presents “The Films of Stan Brakhage” with an original live score by Cloudland Canyon at the Crosstown Theater on Thursday\, March 6\, at 7:00 pm.\n\n\n\n \nStan Brakhaage\, a wildly prolific experimental filmmaker in American avant-garde cinema and one of cinema’s principle architects of cinematic modernism\, made nearly 400 films and eight books of film criticism and theory between 1952-2003. Dozens of his films\, including “Anticipation of the Night\,” “Mothlight\,” “Dog Star Man\,” and “Scenes from Under Childhood” are acknowledged masterworks. The techniques he pioneered \, most notably rapid editing\, handheld camera\, lens flares and physical manipulation of the filmstrip\, came to define experimental cinema\, but they were also absorbed by advertising\, music videos\, and Hollywood.\nChallenging all taboos in his exploration of birth\, sex\, death\, and the search for God\,” he turned his camera on explicit lovemaking\, childbirth\, even autopsy. Many of his most famous works pursue the nature of vision itself and transcend the act of filming. His films seek to change the way we see. They encourage viewers to abandon traditional structure in favor of pure visual perception that is not reliant on naming what is seen. His goal was to create a more visceral  visual experience. He believed that “a stream of visual consciousness could be nothing less than the pathway of the soul.” His films are shot in highly sensual colors and utilize minimal soundtracks. \n \nCloudland Canyon  is an experimental rock/psychedelic rock band formed in 2002 by Kip Uhlhorn and Simon Wojan. Cloudland Canyon has released several critically acclaimed albums include Fin Eaves\, Lie in Light\, and An Arabesque. Their recent releases have been produced by Sonic Boom from Spacemen3/Spectrum. With each release\, Uhlhorn has pushed the envelope of experimental pop music\, collaborating with various musicians and producers to create intricate and other wordly compositions .Cloudland Canyon is a must-listen for anyone interested in the possibilities of experimental music in the 21 century. New members joining Uhlhorn in the band include Corbin Linebarier of General Labor\, Graham Burks of Loose Opinions\, and Alex Greene of Alex Greene and the Rolling Head Orchestra.

SUMMARY:Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992)
DESCRIPTION:In the town of Twin Peaks\, everyone has their secrets—but especially Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). In this prequel to his groundbreaking 1990s television series\, David Lynch resurrects the teenager found wrapped in plastic at the beginning of the show\, following her through the last week of her life and teasing out the enigmas that surround her murder. Homecoming queen by day and drug-addicted thrill seeker by night\, Laura leads a double life that pulls her deeper and deeper into horror as she pieces together the identity of the assailant who has been terrorizing her for years. Nightmarish in its vision of an innocent torn apart by unfathomable forces\, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is nevertheless one of Lynch’s most humane films\, aching with compassion for its tortured heroine—a character as enthralling in life as she was in death. SUMMARY:Some Like It Hot (1959)
DESCRIPTION:Two down on their luck jazz musicians find themselves out of a job and on the run after the police raid the speakeasy they perform in and they inadvertently stumble upon a gang war. With no money and nowhere to hide\, a gig with Sweet Sue and her Society Syncopators at a Florida beach resort seems like the perfect getaway. There’s just one problem: the Syncopators are an all-female band\, and Joe and Jerry aren’t women – yet. \nArmed with some dodgy wigs and wobbly falsettos\, Joe and Jerry manage to join the Syncopators\, where they meet Sugar Kane: a hooch-swilling\, ukulele-playing knockout with a soft spot for bad boy saxophone players. Barely able to believe their good fortune\, things start to go off the rails for the pair when they begin to attract unwanted attention from lecherous millionaires and some familiar faces show up at their hotel for a gathering of the country’s most dangerous criminals. Directed by Billy Wilder. 122 minutes. N/R- This is a collaborative screening with the Orpheum Theatre Group.

It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour\, which led to five successful albums with Columbia Records\, including Cache\, Kirk’s first #1 album.\n\nKIM BURRELL\nHouston-based singer and pianist Kim Burrell\, known for her unique “jazz gospel” sound\, began her professional career singing with gospel greats like Rev. James Cleveland. Her solo recording career took off with releases on Tommy Boy Gospel\, and she’s since collaborated with artists ranging from R. Kelly and George Clinton to gospel stars like Shirley Caesar and Kirk Franklin\, and even secular icons like Stevie Wonder and Pharrell Williams (on the Hidden Figures soundtrack). SUMMARY:Secret Mall Apartment (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Secret Mall Apartment (2025) In 2003\, eight Rhode Island artists created a secret apartment inside the busy Providence Place Mall and lived there for four years\, filming everything along the way. They snuck in furniture\, tapped into the mall’s electricity\, and even constructed a wall\, smuggling in more than two tons \nof cinder block. Far more than just a wild prank\, the secret apartment became a deeply meaningful place for its inhabitants. It was a personal expression of defiance against local gentrification\, a boundary-pushing work of public/private art\, a clubhouse in which large-scale charitable art projects were planned\, and\, finally\, a 750 square-foot “F you” to The Man. Featuring never-before-seen footage of the space and revealing the identities of all the participants for the first time\, SECRET MALL APARTMENT is more than just a bonkers true story. Director Jeremy Workman\, whose “Lily Topples The World” won the Grand Jury Prize at \nSXSW 2021\, delivers a poignant exploration of a group of artists who discovered their purpose within the most commercial and improbable places.
