SUMMARY:Crosstown Counterpoint: Blueshift Ensemble + Evan Williams
DESCRIPTION:Crosstown Arts presents Crosstown Counterpoint: Blueshift Ensemble + Evan Williams in the Central Atrium at Crosstown Concourse. \nCentral Atrium\nWednesday\, June 14\, 2023\nShow begins at 7:30 pm\nTickets: Free \nREGISTER HERE \nSupported by an Arts Access grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission and ArtsMemphis\, Crosstown Arts presents the premiere of the commissioned work by Evan Williams\, “Crosstown Counterpoint” alongside Williams’ earlier works “Bodies Upon the Gears”\, “Amber Waves”\, and Terry Riley’s classic minimalist bop\, “In C.” \nAs the groundbreaking neared for Crosstown Concourse in 2017\, several Memphians young and old were interviewed to provide oral histories of the Sears Crosstown building and what the revitalization would do for the area. Taking inspiration from works such as Steve Reich’s Different Trains\, Crosstown Counterpoint uses these oral histories to tell the multi-generational story of this space\, and what it meant to the people of Memphis. Two antiphonal string quartets accompany the voices\, using the open space of the Central Atrium of Crosstown Concourse to bring this history to life. \nDrawing from inspirations as diverse as Medieval chant to contemporary pop\, the music of composer and conductor Evan Williams (b. 1988) explores the thin lines between beauty and disquieting\, joy and sorrow\, and simple and complex\, while often tackling important social and political issues. Williams’ catalogue contains a broad range of work\, from vocal and operatic offerings to instrumental works\, along with electronic music. \nBlueshift Ensemble is a Memphis-based contemporary chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing artists and audiences together through artistic collaboration. By programming both new and existing classical repertoire alongside multi-genre collaborations\, Blueshift aims to connect a wider audience to today’s classical music. The ensemble draws upon Memphis’s uniquely diverse musical heritage by combining classical music with popular music genres such as rock\, blues\, and soul and featuring local musicians\, visual artists\, and composers. \n

She uses her craft to explore themes around shame\, sex\, love\, and family\, with an acute focus on the Black Femme experience. She often pulls from her family history as a first generation Somali-American living in the south to tell stories about Black womanhood and Black motherhood. This book traces the representation of the Black elite in African-American literature from the lives of free Blacks during slavery to rising Black middle and upper classes in the twenty-first century. \n  \nDr. Shelby Crosby’s research spans mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century African American literature\, representations of womanhood (particularly Black womanhood)\, and critical race theory. It threads together critical race\, Black feminism\, and literary historical frameworks to interrogate an American national story. Dr. Crosby is currently working on a book manuscript that examines the pervasive derogatory ideologies of Black womanhood. Using Black feminist theory to ground the text\, she will examine such authors as Frederick Douglass\, Williams Wells Brown\, and Martin Delany\, arguing that\, through their adoption of traditional demarcations of white womanhood\, Black women are further pushed to the margins of American society.

SUMMARY:Black Music Month Pop-Up Series: C maJor and Eillo
DESCRIPTION:Each Thursday in June\, Crosstown Arts presents a special Black Music Month pop-up series in the Central Atrium. All performances are free and open to the public. \n5:30-7:30pm | Central Atrium\nFree and open to the public \nBorn and raised in Memphis\, TN\, music has always been apart of C maJor’s life. As an infant\, his mother would put him to sleep with classical selections. In middle and high school he would go on to perform as a percussionist in his schools’ concert and marching bands. As a music producer/engineer those roots as a percussionist play a major part in the C maJor sound. Drums are EVERYTHING. Percussion holds a certain power in music; the power to make the listener feel and react. As a musician\, C maJor plays on that power using the drums in unexpected patterns to get unexpected results out of listeners. As a kid\, he grew up listening to the underground sound that Memphis is now taking worldwide. He has worked with hometown legends Gangsta Boo and Project Pat closely as both a producer and engineer. He is also one out of three producer/engineers in the Unapologetic family. At the core\, C maJor is a simple\, quiet\, calm person. He’ll let the beats do the talking\, and they talk a lot. \nEillo (ee-loh) is a second-generation musician from Memphis who loves to blend his musical influences to make something new. \nBorn from neo-soul on his mother’s side and underground hip hop on his father’s\, Eillo’s ears always picked up around music. Early memories of the music that his mom would sing to in the house daily from India Arie to Stevie Wonder\, and hearing his dad freestyle around the house were hat started his journey into finding more ways to experience music. He picked up drums at 4\, keys at 5\, drawing at 7\, and beats at 13. \nEillo also became drawn to a lot of weird music that innovated the media along with concepts like polyrhythms or microtones that redefined what we know as music. \nThese interests\, mixed with the experience that comes with being black in America\, sparked a flame that affected his outlook on the influence of music to the world\, and how the creatives he listed to were able to tell a story through their gifts \nBy this time\, he knew that all he wanted to do in life was move the world with his music. \nWith all of this he still struggled a lot w being fully expressive in himself to nurture his gifts. Until summer 2018 when he became an intern for Unapologetic. That key unlocked a part of him that begin to break through that barrier. He picked up the guitar a year later and\, around that time\, finally set himself on the name Eillo\, a play of the word Elohim signifying his connection to all people through music and through the fact that we are all the creator of something. \nEillo’s purpose is to use his acquired skills and talents to create a sound that can resonate w people\, but still reflects his unique approach to music.
