HerView: Sears Memphis by Melanie Manos

HerView: Sears Memphis depicts women’s labor in the 20th century department store and is based on locally sourced history.  Manos will ride on an original freight cart used in the Sears Memphis warehouse while typing on a vintage typewriter, and will hand routing slips to Crosstown Concourse visitors.  HerView is part of a larger project Manos is spearheading, Visualizing Women’s Work, which confronts gender bias in monuments and other historical markers through novel forms of publicly visible women’s history, including popup performances and webAR* animations.  

Ukuleles in the Heartland: The Webb-Tigert Ukulele Duo, Ray Cygrymus, and Kirk Jones

The Ukuleles in the Heartland series visits the Crosstown Concourse, featuring the Nashville-based Webb-Tigert Ukulele duo, Ray Cygrymus (veteran of Pittsburgh bands Maxwell Switch, Tangent, and the Ukuholicks), and Huntsville, Alabama, ukulele performer and teacher Kirk Jones (also known by his adorable stage alias/YouTube handle, “Orangutan Or Lion”).

Supported by an Arts Access grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission and ArtsMemphis, Crosstown Arts presents the premiere of the commissioned work by Evan Williams, “Crosstown Counterpoint” alongside Williams’ earlier works “Bodies Upon the Gears”, “Amber Waves”, and Terry Riley’s classic minimalist bop, “In C.”

Nathan Graybeal Quintet

Nathan Graybeal is a product of his time, growing up in the digital information age and utilizing his long history of videography by mixing it with his love for the saxophone. Within four years, he has accumulated over 20 million views on his YouTube channel known as “Saxologic.” After acquiring his master’s degree in jazz performance at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, Nathan is currently pursuing a DMA in Classical Saxophone at the University of Memphis.

Under the direction of Dr. Michael Shults, University of Memphis Jazz Combo 1 is the top performing small group jazz ensemble at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music. The all-star combo specializes in compositions by post-bop jazz masters including Wayne Shorter, Christian McBride, Kenny Garrett, and Memphis’s own James Williams.

Day of the Dead at Crosstown Concourse

In partnership with Cazateatro, Crosstown Concourse presents a Day of the Dead celebration with music, folklore, dancers, altars, and crafts. Featuring performances by Cazateatro Catrinas/Catrines, Ballet Meztli, Danza Azteca Xochitquetzal, Mariachi Guadalajara, Tropical Fusion Latin Band, DJ Alexis White, and more! Milis Flowers and Gift flower cart will be on-site. And don’t miss a special FREE matinee screening of Coco in Crosstown Theater at 2 pm (register for Coco here).

Shop from records, CDs, cassettes, and other music-related merch and memorabilia curated by Memphis Listening Lab on the first floor of the Central Atrium. WYXR will be selling tees and other radio station merch.

On the second floor of the Central Atrium, Crosstown Arts will host its annual Zine Fest where guests can shop for zines created by local makers.

This year Memphis Zine Fest 6 will be coupled with the Memphis Listening Lab & WYXR’s Record Swap! This event is FREE and ALL AGES so bring your friends and family.

Haven’t made a quaran-zine?? No problem! We’ll have a free zine-making table! There will also be a DIY zine-making station each day of the fest with demonstrations and supplies to help you get started on making your very own zine! Just bring your ideas! Think Memphis, music, literature, punk, DIY, handmade prints, photographs, whatever you want!

Memphis Zine Fest is an annual celebration of zines and zinesters in our community!

For one night only, come out and see what your favorite local zine makers have been creating this year and check out brand new zines from the students in our youth zine making workshop.

This year’s fest will take place on Friday July 19th in the Crosstown Concourse Central Atrium from 5-8 pm. As always, this is a free and all ages event, so feel free to bring your friends, your kids, and your grandparents.

Join us as we flip the switch on the Crosstown Concourse holiday lights in the Central Atrium. This lighting installation, which cascades down from the top of the atrium, is approximately 100 feet tall! Enjoy live music, hot cocoa, crafts, a sing-along, and more! Crosstown Arts will lead a kids’ craft making holiday lanterns. Free and open to the public.

This event is happening concurrently with the Crosstown Arts Open House, the Choose901 Holiday Pop Up Shop, and the Cheryl Pesce The Lifestyle ….

Babu Press Presents Marvin and the Marvelous Map

Babu Press and Memphis Symphony Orchestra principal oboist Joseph Salvallagio present this fun and educational event, perfect for the whole family.
Come enjoy an original children’s story featuring audience participation and musical accompaniment by MSO musicians Joseph Salvallagio (oboe), Mark Wallace (cello), and Jenny Davis (flute). While kids enjoy the concert, parents can enjoy French Truck Coffee’s 2-for-1 Saturday mimosa special and coffee with breakfast.
